Download or read book The Chora of Metaponto 7 written by Joseph Coleman Carter and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 1713 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seventh volume in the Institute of Classical Archaeology's series on the rural countryside (chora) of Metaponto is a study of the Greek sanctuary at Pantanello. The site is the first Greek rural sanctuary in southern Italy that has been fully excavated and exhaustively documented. Its evidence—a massive array of distinctive structural remains and 30,000-plus artifacts and ecofacts—offers unparalleled insights into the development of extra-urban cults in Magna Graecia from the seventh to the fourth centuries BC and the initiation rites that took place within the cults. Of particular interest are the analyses of the well-preserved botanical and faunal material, which present the fullest record yet of Greek rural sacrificial offerings, crops, and the natural environment of southern Italy and the Greek world. Excavations from 1974 to 2008 revealed three major phases of the sanctuary, ranging from the Archaic to Early Hellenistic periods. The structures include a natural spring as the earliest locus of the cult, an artificial stream (collecting basin) for the spring's outflow, Archaic and fourth-century BC structures for ritual dining and other cult activities, tantalizing evidence of a Late Archaic Doric temple atop the hill, and a farmhouse and tile factory that postdate the sanctuary's destruction. The extensive catalogs of material and special studies provide an invaluable opportunity to study the development of Greek material culture between the seventh and third centuries BC, with particular emphasis on votive pottery and figurative terracotta plaques.

Download or read book The Behavior of Flexible Airfield Pavements Under Loads Theory and Experiments written by Yu Tang Chou and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The instrumentation data of the multiple-wheel heavy gear load (MWHGL) tests were reduced and analyzed. By incorporating the performance of test pavements under traffic, relations between load and pavement response were established. A method was developed to compute the measured stresses and deflections of the test pavements; based on the method, the stresses and deflections can be computed for similar types of airfield pavements under different loads. Correlations were established between computed parameters and traffic performance data from the MWHGL test section as well as from many other pavement tests conducted by the Corps of Engineers. Based on the instrumentation data, the principle of superposition was found to be valid for flexible pavements. Attempts were made to reevaluate the equivalent single-wheel loads for MWHGLs by many different methods. (Author).

Download or read book A Globalised Visual Culture written by Fabio Guidetti and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2020-07-31 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Late Antique artefacts, and the images they carry, attest to a highly connected visual culture from ca. 300 to 800 C.E. On the one hand, the same decorative motifs and iconographies are found across various genres of visual and material culture, irrespective of social and economic differences among their users – for instance in mosaics, architectural decoration, and luxury arts (silver plate, textiles, ivories), as well as in everyday objects such as tableware, lamps, and pilgrim vessels. On the other hand, they are also spread in geographically distant regions, mingled with local elements, far beyond the traditional borders of the classical world. At the same time, foreign motifs, especially of Germanic and Sasanian origin, are attested in Roman territories. This volume aims at investigating the reasons behind this seemingly globalised visual culture spread across the Late Antique world, both within the borders of the (former) Roman and (later) Byzantine Empire and beyond, bringing together diverse approaches characteristic of different national and disciplinary traditions. The presentation of a wide range of relevant case studies chosen from different geographical and cultural contexts exemplifies the vast scale of the phenomenon and demonstrates the benefit of addressing such a complex historical question with a combination of different theoretical approaches.
