Book The Ministry of Administrative Assistants

Download or read book The Ministry of Administrative Assistants written by Sue Thompson and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ministry guide has been written to provide information about how to provide support ministry to the people with whom you work. This guide is also for people who work in many different ministry settings, a church or denominational administrative office, a small or medium size church, a parachurch or missions focused organization, and large churches. It will assist them with how they look at their ministry, and the level of support that is needed for their particular setting. A call to ministry is an important thing to understand for an administrative assistant; your heart and the way you deal with people and tasks are different if you understand your position as a call to ministry rather than a job for a paycheck. If you understand that you represent not just your pastor and your church, but Christ to every person who calls, stops by, e-mails, etc., you approach your tasks and people differently. Working as the assistant to a pastor, or any person in ministry, you have to approach your tasks with an understanding of who you are serving, and you are serving Christ and his people. The position of Administrative Assistant is a vital part of the over-all ministry of your church and the congregation. You are the gate-keeper, bridge-builder, keeper of the “information”, soother of wounded feelings, and the deliverer of unwanted news. You are the person who has your finger on the pulse of your congregation and your community. You are the person people will come to for answers. You will handle thousands of details related to dozens of different projects and commitments for your pastor. You will help make your pastor’s ministry seamless. While all of these descriptions may make your head spin, this is a part of the ministry of being an assistant. You can look at each day as a challenge or an adventure. If you understand your job as a ministry and understand your call to this ministry you are ready for a great adventure. Begin each day with a prayer for wisdom and strength, surrender your mind and will to God, and prepare yourself to work with the heart of a servant. As Christ walks alongside you in your daily life, you will learn to walk along side your pastor and to be a partner in their ministry.

Book excerpt: To be effective, pastors must minister in a variety of settings. Each setting--whether hospital room, jail, nursing home, funeral home, or even in the pastor's study--is different. Each setting brings its own unique dilemmas and rules. The pastor's authority will vary according to the setting as will the expectations of the pastor by the staff and parishioners in each setting. The pastor must be comfortable in a variety of settings in order to build Christ-centered relationships, but comfort comes only with familiarity and some settings can be intimidating or even frightening. Bailing a parishioner out of jail in the middle of the night presents challenges to ministry as does helping parishioners plan their loved one's funeral after a suicide. Context matters, and Urias Beverly gives the reader concrete steps and illustrations on how to artfully minister in a variety of common settings as well as how to cope with the dilemmas pastors face in facilitating ministry in these settings.

Based on updated research and interviews with over 600 veteran associate staff members from many different denominations, Lawson and Boersma describe the priorities, attitudes, and practices that can help associate staff members thrive in their ministry roles. They present, explain, and illustrate a four-part “Model for Thriving in Associate Staff Ministry,” a concrete framework that readers can use to help achieve satisfaction and balance in their own lives. In addition to addressing those in associate staff roles, the book also includes chapters to help supervising pastors and church boards support their associate staff members. An Essential Resource for Associate Pastors and Ministers at all Levels

In an egotistical world, we are deemed successful only when we are number one. This idea is so embedded in our psyches we spend our entire lives trying to reach the top - sometimes at all costs. But is full accomplishment only experienced when you are at the top? Can you succeed in ministry without occupying the chief seat of leadership and power?

In this theological and personal reflection, the author gives voice to many unspoken experiences and ambitions of associate ministers who faithfully serve their more prominent and popular leaders - unnoticed. Having served successfully in the shadow of one of the most outstanding pastors and congressmen in the USA, the author writes from a wealth of knowledge and experience. Drawing from his personal and vocational journey, he boldly redefines success in ministry and demonstrates that fulfillment and success are possible, even in a subsidiary capacity.

This insightful book will engage, empower, and encourage you to:

  • Optimize your skills and gifts right where you are
  • Relinquish the idea that to be or feel successful you must hold the top spot
  • Have meaningful reflection on your own experiences
  • Better appreciate your role as an associate minister/lay leader
  • Achieve excellence in your service to God and His people
  • Apply the principles therein to find success in your vocation at any level
  • Avoid frustration, impatience, and apathy in your ministry

Book Pastors Are People Too

Download or read book Pastors Are People Too written by Jimmy Dodd and published by David C Cook. This book was released on 2016-05-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are your top twenty expectations for your pastor? Now multiply your list by the number of people who attend church with you. Is it any wonder pastors are overwhelmed and underappreciated? They’re expected to know every member by name, preach a “home run sermon” every Sunday, condemn sin without hurting anyone’s feelings, and be available to serve others 24/7 while not neglecting their own family. The intensity of these expectations and lack of appreciation can and does bring the majority of pastors to a place of despair and ultimately departure from pastoral ministry. This practical field guide offers tangible ways to better understand and care for the pastor who cares so deeply about you.
