Book The Passing of the Indian and Buffalo Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Passing of the Indian and Buffalo Classic Reprint written by J. L. Hill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-18 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Passing of the Indian and Buffalo Indian history begins with the advent of the white people upon this continent. Much of what has been written about the pre-columbian period is but a repetition of old fancies, legends and traditions. There are a few mounds or graves with their contents some inscriptions and some pottery resembling pres ent tools and implements common to the world. Excepting these and his descendants and their legends the pre-columbian Aboriginal stands a mythe. The mounds or earth works found in New York, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio and elsewhere were for defence, residence or burial places. Built along streams they were frequently in the vicinity of rich alluvial soil where corn or other crops were easily raised. The cave and cliff dwellings of the rivers and canyons of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona and the ruined towns or pueblos on the plains in the same regions, were also for defence and residence. Some of the ancient ruins which have been restored on paper from the foundation lines are deemed to have been communal houses. These three grades or kinds of structures each conforming to the demand of climate were found by the Europeans on their first settlement in what were the Colonies of England, France and Spain. The antiquity of these structures was not determined by them. The ruined cave towns and cliff dwellings on the plains or along streams in Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Arizona and in some cases adjacent to the present Pueblos have long been peopled by romance with legends of a race anterior to the ancestors of the present Indians. They have been maped, plated, described, painted and photographed until nothing new can be said about them. Investigation shows tha tthe Pueblos were built of adobe or sundried bricks or stone blocks broken from the sandstone, adjacent or bowlders taken from the rivers or streams and never of dressed stone as known to the whites, that they were the homes of the ancestry of the present Indians of the towns of the vicinity and a part of the American race. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Border and the Buffalo: An Untold Story of the Southwest Plains In presenting these Reminiscences to the reader the author wishes to say that they were written and compiled by an uneducated man, who is now 63 years of age, with no pretensions to literary attainments, having a very meager knowledge of the common-school branches. In placing these recollections in book form there is an endeavor all along the line to state the facts as they occurred to me. The tragic deaths seen by the author in dance-hall and saloon have been omitted, in this work. But to that band of hardy, tireless hunters that helped, as all army officers declared, more to settle the vexed Indian question in the five years of the greatest destruction of wild animals in the history of the world's hunting, the author especially devotes that portion of the book pertaining to the buffaloes. The incidents connected with the tragic death of Marshall Sewall will be appreciated, I trust, by all lovers of fair play. Thomas Lumpkins met his death in a manner that could be expected by all old plainsmen. There were so many tragic incidents that occurred during the author's experience after leaving New Mexico, that it was difficult for him to segregate one event from another, in order to prepare a presentable book, - one that could be read in every home in the land without shocking the finer sensibilities of the reader. And it is the sincere hope and desire of the author that this design and object have been accomplished. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Passing of the Indian and Buffalo written by J. L. Hill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-27 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Passing of the Indian and Buffalo The present Pueblo Indians of Arizona and New Mexico living in the regions of these ruins are not a mysterious people nor a more ancient people than other tribes of North American Indians. Six of the Moqui towns are inhabited by Shosshone Indians. The people of the seventh Town Tewa originally from the Valley of the Rio Grande are probably also Shoshone as well as those of the 19 Pueblos of New Mexico. They are all probably a portion of the down drift of the Shoshone movement centuries ago which came from the North and went South down the Valleys on the Hast and West of the Rocky Mountains to the Rio Grande, thence to the Pacific Ocean. The great variety of life among the various tribes of people on this continent when first noted by the whites is confusing on review and furnishes but little grounds for comparison. The varying degrees of progress or of detail of daily tribal life are perplexing. Still climate of the several sections in which the Aborigines were found in these varying conditions will account for much of the difference in customs, forms and modes of life. It is in evidence that many Indian tribes have become extinct from various causes especially war famine and disease since white man came to this continent. Others were described by the Indians as having become extinct long prior to the coming of the "paleface". So by observation and tradition as well as their own statements the thought is forced that the Indian Nation or tribes were on the decline at the date of the arrival of the whites under Columbus. Still with all this presumably a large Aboriginal population in what is now the United States, not a vestage remains to tell of the so called pre-Columbian men and women, except now and then a mound, a fort, a pueblo or grave and traditions and legends. The Europeans found the Indians self sustaining and self reliant with tribal Governments, many forms of worship and many superstitutions with ample clothing of skins and furs and food fairly well supplied. They were wild men and women to whom the restrains of a foreign control became as bonds of steel. In 1832, George Catlin the eminent ethnologist from observation gave the rank and grades of men in the various Indian tribtes which with some slight modifications for local forms and necessities were general. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jack Among the Indians: Or a Boy's Summer on the Buffalo Plains There were few settlements, and as the buffalo roamed far and wide over the treeless land, the Indians followed them; for then both were free. Often a tribe was obliged to defend itself against the attacks of enemies; and its young men often made war journeys into hostile country. Though the daily life of the village was quiet and simple, yet sometimes it was interrupted by most exciting incidents and adventures both of hunting and fighting. You listened attentively to the story of Jack, the Young Ranchman, and I hope that you will like to learn what Jack did the next season, when he spent the summer with the buffalo eaters of the Northern Plains, hunted their game, fought their enemies and lived their life. It would seem to be a fairy story were it not for the fact of its settlement, and the evidences of its now almost ancient Civilization. Book Notes on the Buffalo Head Dance of the Thunder Gens of the Fox Indians Classic Reprint

Download or read book Notes on the Buffalo Head Dance of the Thunder Gens of the Fox Indians Classic Reprint written by Truman Michelson and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the Buffalo-Head Dance of the Thunder Gens of the Fox Indians In the Fortieth Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology, pages 502 and 503, I first called attention to the sacred pack belonging to Pyatwaya'A, and presented evidence to show that the ceremony belonging to this pack followed the general pattern of Fox gens festivals. (See also Bull. 85, Bur. Amer. Ethn., pp. 56, 102, and the literature cited.) With the accumulation of new material (including some as yet unpublished) it is also clear that the ceremony is not closer to the ceremony of "Those Who Worship the Little Spotted Buffalo" than to several other Fox gens festivals. The two accounts given with Indian text supplement but also slightly contradict each other. Where they disagree I presume the first account is more trustworthy, for the author of the second version (Sam Peters) has not taken a prominent part in native Fox ceremonies for several years. The author of the first account (whose name is withheld in accordance with agreement so that he may not suffer socially) is very active in Fox religious ceremonies and has proved a good informant. Pepya'me'ckwi'A was given the sacred pack by her father, as he had no sons; for he desired to keep the sacred pack in the family. When Pepya'me'ckwi'A was given it her boy was so small that he knew nothing. Her daughter Pyatwaya'A (hypocoristic for Pyatwayaga''kwA "Sounds her wings as she comes) was accordingly given it, as she was older. The sacred pack was formerly kept at the dwelling of Tetepa'cA, husband of Pepya'me'ckwi'A. Pyatwaya'A was a female, but this did not prevent her from being the custodian of the most important sacred pack of the Thunder gens of the Fox Indians. Pyatwaya'A belonged to the Thunder gens because from the native Fox point of view being named under a special circumstance she would belong to the gens of her (known) grandfather; not because her mother was a member of the Thunder gens, as I presume Mr. Hartland would fondly imagine. It may be added that the sacred pack has recently (before 1924) been transferred to Tta ki ta ko si (Chuck). Book Dodge City the Cowboy Capital and the Great Southwest

Download or read book Dodge City the Cowboy Capital and the Great Southwest written by Robert M. Wright and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dodge City, the Cowboy Capital and the Great Southwest: In the Days of the Wild Indian, the Buffalo, the Cowboys, Dance Halls, Gambling Halls and Bad Men Whether a preface is explanatory or apologetic, is immaterial, in the use we make of this one. Local history is both personal and public; but the narratives of a border life or from conspicuous events, having an origin and a purpose similar to the discovery of a new country. Local history is the result of development and progress; and each city or state history is the example of the whole country. The history of Dodge City, however, includes a wider environment than the ordinary city or town, because it was the focus of a range of country two hundred miles, north, south, east, and west. Therefore, its center of gravitation was equal in extent to that of a state. Upon this axis revolved and oscillated the bull-whacker, the buffalo hunter, the cowboy, the humble citizen, and the desperado. The character and life of this mixed class of citizenship was greatly sharpened and enhanced by reason of the strenuous and characteristic impulses which governed the circumstances in pursuit and development. There was nothing passive in the life of the plainsman. The objective was the supreme motive; for he stood in face of danger, and his quickness of intuition and sense of warning kept him always alert. A character built up under such conditions must have been able to cope with the dangers and hardships incident to a country infested with warlike bands of Indians, and of outlaws which followed on the flanks of civilization. It is the author of this book, Honorable R. M. Wright, we wish to emphasize in this simple explanation. Mr. Wright came to the plains country a few years before the civil war. As a young man, active and vigorous, he became imbued with a spirit of chivalry and courage, followed by those traits of character inevitable to this kind of life; charity and benevolence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Indian Days Upon a hanging precipice atop of the Eagle Scout Butte there appeared a motionless and solitary figure - almost eagle-like he perched! The people in the camp below saw him, but none looked at him long. They turned their heads quickly away with a nervous tingling, for the height above the plains was great. Almost spirit-like among the upper clouds the young warrior sat immovable. It was Antelope. He was fasting and seeking a sign from the "Great Mystery," for such was the first step of the young and ambitious Sioux who wished to be a noted warrior among his people. He is a princely youth, among the wild Sioux, who hunts for his tribe and not for himself! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Recollections of Buffalo: Read Before the Buffalo Historical Society, May 19, 1908 At last I was missed; my haunt discovered; a sound admonition followed, also the padlocking of the roof door. This was my first great deprivation. Years afterward I was again on the roof, but it wasn't interesting. There were houses, or something in the way. From those same garret windows (i had the attic for a play-room) I could look far up Delaware avenue, nearly to Tupper street, and see the domed roof of Doctor John son's cottage, afterward the dwelling of the Buffalo Semi nary, and which is still standing, as it was rebuilt after its fire. I stood at that garret window and saw it burn, and watched the domed metal roof fall in with a wonderful shower of colored fire and sparks. (and, excepting this one, for many years there were almost no houses on Dela ware street below Allen.) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
