Book excerpt: "This book tells the story of the Parnell split in Westmeath and argues that it was part of a wider revolt by a section of the Catholic middle class against the dominant role of the Church in the politics of the county. The dispute in Westmeath was characterized by the enmity between the local Catholic bishop Dr. Thomas Nulty, a passionate anti-Parnellite, and Parnellite newspaper editor John P. Hayden. Hayden was representative of the emergent Catholic middle class and a thorn in the side of Nulty long before Parnell's divorce became an issue in Irish politics. When the Parnell crisis broke the two were pitted against each other once again. In the ensuing struggle, Hayden used his newspaper, the Westmeath Examiner, not just to support the Parnellite cause but also to roundly condemn his clerical opponents, prompting the bishop to ban the faithful from reading the paper. Although the bishop and his clergy emerged as the clear winners in the Parnell dispute, Hayden was far from vanquished. Following the death of Nulty in 1898, he went on to play a prominent role in the constitutional nationalist movement, both in Westmeath and in his native Roscommon."--Provided by publisher.

The goal of limited Home Rule, peacefully achieved, appeared to die with it. Given the speed of the party's collapse, its death has been seen as inevitable. Though such views have been challenged, there has been no detailed study of the Irish Party in the last years of union with Britain, before the world war and the Easter Rising transformed Irish politics. Through a study of five counties in provincial Ireland - Leitrim, Longford, Roscommon, Sligo, and Westmeath - that history has now been written. Far from being 'rotten', the Irish Party was representative of nationalist opinion and still capable of self-renewal and change. However, the Irish nationalism at this time was also suffused with a fierce anglophobia and sense of grievance, defined by its enemies, which rapidly came to the fore, first in the Home Rule crisis and then in the war. Redmond's project, the peaceful attainment of Home Rule, simply could not be realised.

Book excerpt: This unique account of the dramatic events of the Parnell split in Meath challenges the accepted view that Irish priests could lead their people only in the political direction that they wished to go. Meath people were devoted to Charles Stewart Parnell, who had entered Westminster as their MP in 1875. The loyalty of many of them was unaffected by the divorce court revelation in 1890 of his adultery with Katharine O'Shea, which caused the split that continued even after his death in 1891. However, Bishop Thomas Nulty preached that no Parnellite voter could "continue a Catholic" but then claimed election results as political victories. David Lawlor's research shows how Dr. Nulty broke the power of local Parnellites over their refusal to vote for a nun as matron of Navan workhouse. The bishop then nominated Michael Davitt, founder of the Land League, to unseat North Meath's Parnellite MP, Pierce Mahony. While the Parnellites successfully petitioned the courts to have Davitt's election annulled because of "undue clerical influence", new anti-Parnellite candidates narrowly won the ensuing by-elections. However, clerical interference in Meath politics provided damaging evidence of "Rome rule" to Tories and Unionists opposing Gladstone's second Home Rule bill, which was lost in the Lords in 1893.

One of the most controversial incidents in recent GAA history, it strained relations between the GAA and Éamon de Valera's Fianna Fáil government. It also damaged the standing of the Ban and was used extensively by opponents to argue for its removal.
