Book excerpt: The ancient Parish of Halifax covered a wide area, and in addition to the mother church was served by two chapels, Elland and Heptonstall, which though dependent upon it had certain parochial rights, and registers of their own. Of the 24 townships which were included in the parish, nine were attached to the chapel of Elland, and five to Heptonstall. The remaining ten townships, Halifax, Hipperholme, Midgley, Northowram, Ovenden, Shelf, Skircoat, Southowram, Sowerby and Warley were directly dependent upon the parish church and are included in its registers. Occasionally baptisms from the other townships also took place there.

York, Vol. 1: Baptisms, 1538 to 1593 The present volume contains all the entries on the first 220 leaves, being the baptisms from Dec., 1538, to Dec. 30, 1593. More than half the first leaf has been torn away, and a large piece from the top corner of the next two and a small piece from the top corner of the next three are also missing, with consequent loss of portions of entries. Some matter has also been lost through the cutting down of a number of leaves at the beginning of the register in binding. There are no entries between Feb. 4, 1563, and April 24, 1566, but the register seems to be intact at that date. Leaves bearing the entries from Jul. 5 to Aug. 7, 1585, and from Aug. 7 to Sep. 1593, have been torn out, but otherwise, except for occasional entries here and there, the baptisms for the period covered by-the register appear to be complete. In that part of Book I. Printed here, pages 9 5 - 102 are duplicates with pages 87 - 94, and pages 143 - 150 are duplicates with pages 151 - 158. In the present volume, pages 95 - 102 and 143 - 150 only are printed as they contain the greater number of entries, but any variations are noted within brackets. There are no entries on pages 320 - 1, 365 - 6 and 432 - 440. Amongst the baptisms are a few entries of burials which have been made in error. On pages 6, 23, 29, 32 and 35 of this volume are such entries, which have been struck out and appear in their proper place among the burials. There is another on page 87, not struck out but entered in its right place. On pages 26 and 66 are burials which have not been entered again, whilst on page 31 is an entry, which may be a burial, but which does not appear in that part of the register. This register has, on the whole, been very well kept. The earlier part is written in Latin and contractions are freely used throughout. The excessive number of flourishes and the unusually lengthy contraction marks render the writing, at times, somewhat difficult to decipher, but no pains have been spared to ensure an accurate transcript, formalmatter only being omitted and capitals substituted for small letters at the beginning of all proper names. The contraction marks, too, are reproduced or omitted in accordance with the original. The whole of the proofs have been compared with the Register. York, Vol. 2: Marriages and Burials, 1538 to 1593 This volume contains all the entries of Marriages and Burials in Book I of the Register. The former, beginning on Nov. 28, 1538, and coming down to Dec. 20, 1593, occupy leaves 221 to 301. Leaves 302 to 304 are blank. The burials, which begin on Nov. 22, 1538, and end on Dec. 31, 1593, cover leaves 305 to 441. A small piece is torn off leaf 300, but fortunately this part of it was blank. The bottom edges of a number of pages are somewhat frayed, and in two or three places the ink has faded. In past times' some leaves, mostly blank, have been torn out, and, apart from this, there are a few gaps in the entries. With these exceptions this part of the Register is complete and in good condition. A careful examination shows that two leaves have been torn out between pages 572 and 573, but the fragments which remain do not bear any writing, and although there are no marriages between Dec. 23 and Jan. 19, 1583, it is quite possible that these pages were blank. There is a gap in the burials between Feb. 17, 1545, and May 9, 1546. Page 651 seems to have been left blank for these entries, which have never been filled in. Between pages 670 and 671 a leaf has been torn out, but there can be little doubt but that this was blank, as the entries follow on. The burials from April 6, 1567, to July 3, 1568, are wanting, though the Register appears to be intact at this date. Between pages 728 and 729, as the Register is now bound, are the remains of three leaves. On the first of them is a marginal note October with some letters which seem to be the beginnings of entries. It is possible that they bore some of the missing entries for 1567 and 1568, that the leaves were already lost when the three parts of the Register were first bound, and that the fragments were misplaced in the binding. Between pages 818 and 819 there are remains of five leaves which have been torn out, but no traces of writing on what is left. The burials, however, from April 21 to August 3, 1585, are wanting. There is also a gap in the burials from March 15, 1592, to July 20, 1593. It is somewhat doubtful whether there is a leaf missing here or not. Owingprobably to the illness and death of the custodian of the Register at that time, William Saltonstall, Curate, the burials between Feb. 13, 1561, and Apr. 27, 1562, are entered without date, but the regular system came into force again on May 2. The burials from Feb. 5 to 11, 1549, appear out of order on page 670 of the Register. Otherwise the entries are in regular order. Pages 508, 602 to 608, 651 and 882 are blank.
