Book excerpt: The mainstream historiography on the Ecumenical Council Vatican II (1962-1965) has practically sunk into oblivion the Council's tumultuous and, for several aspects, anomalous beginning. The Author of this book aims at recovering the lost memory of what happened, being of the opinion that the peculiar "teaching" originated by the constitutions, decrees and declarations of that pastoral Council, was also the final consequence of that unusual beginning. As an example of the proceedings reigning in that Assembly, the Author emphasizes the complicated and muddled elaboration of one of the most important documents produced, the constitution Dei Verbum on Divine Revelation.

Book The Parallel Lives of the Noble American Religious Thinkers vs Believers

Download or read book The Parallel Lives of the Noble American Religious Thinkers vs Believers written by William H. Benson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-12-05 with total page 671 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roger Williams championed liberty of conscience. Cotton Mather promoted acts of kindness and doing good. Roger Williams was born in London but migrated to Boston and then to Salem, Plymouth, and finally to the town he founded, Providence, Rhode Island. Cotton Mather was born in Boston and never strayed from it. Both were trained Puritan ministers, but the young man Roger resigned from the ministry, saying it was "the best callings but (generally) they are the worst trades in the world." Instead, he made his living "trucking with the Indians." Cotton preached at his pulpit at Boston's Old North Church until seven weeks before he passed away. They both wrote books, especially Cotton, who wrote over four hundred. Alike and yet so different, the two men were thinkers and writers in America's early religious history. Author William H. Benson compares and contrasts Roger Williams and Cotton Mather in this, the first of six volumes of The Parallel Lives of the Noble American Religious Thinkers vs. Believers. Additional volumes will include: Thomas Paine and George Whitefield, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Joseph Smith, William James and Mary Baker Eddy, Mark Twain and Billy Graham, and H. L. Menoken and Jim Bakker.

Book excerpt: Winner of the John Gilmary Shea Prize The Council of Trent (1545–1563), the Catholic Church’s attempt to put its house in order in response to the Protestant Reformation, has long been praised and blamed for things it never did. Now, in this first full one-volume history in modern times, John W. O’Malley brings to life the volatile issues that pushed several Holy Roman emperors, kings and queens of France, and five popes—and all of Europe with them—repeatedly to the brink of disaster. During the council’s eighteen years, war and threat of war among the key players, as well as the Ottoman Turks’ onslaught against Christendom, turned the council into a perilous enterprise. Its leaders declined to make a pronouncement on war against infidels, but Trent’s most glaring and ironic silence was on the authority of the papacy itself. The popes, who reigned as Italian monarchs while serving as pastors, did everything in their power to keep papal reform out of the council’s hands—and their power was considerable. O’Malley shows how the council pursued its contentious parallel agenda of reforming the Church while simultaneously asserting Catholic doctrine. Like What Happened at Vatican II, O’Malley’s Trent: What Happened at the Council strips mythology from historical truth while providing a clear, concise, and fascinating account of a pivotal episode in Church history. In celebration of the 450th anniversary of the council’s closing, it sets the record straight about the much misunderstood failures and achievements of this critical moment in European history.

Book The Parallel Curriculum

Download or read book The Parallel Curriculum written by Carol Ann Tomlinson and published by Corwin Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given that intelligence is flexible and can be influenced by circumstance and environment, education at all levels ought to be about providing environments and opportunities designed to maximize individual capacity. The Parallel Curriculum represents a synthesizing of views and approaches to creating curriculum for gifted learners, rather than reflecting any single view or approach. The book provides a rationale for developing a new curriculum model, gives a brief overview of the theoretical underpinnings of the model, and aims to help practitioners envision specific application. It is important to realize how narrow views of intelligence limit our growth as individuals, and restrict members of diverse cultures who value intelligences that are typically not addressed in schools. The Parallel Curriculum provides guidance to teachers of students in various age groups and populations, as well as teachers of varied subject areas and in varied programmes contexts.
