This conception of the unity of parabolic teaching in the Gospels has determined the grouping of them, and also the interpretation of each parable in its order. The acknowledged eminent ability of existing works on the Parables of our Lord has led me through many years to shrink from publication of materials long accumulated, and used in a variety of ways. The special plan here adoptedhas, however, encouraged the belief that many whose delight it is to search the Scriptures, according to our Lord's counsel, may find some aid in their study of a peculiarly attractive feature in the structure of God's Word. At the same time, in preparation of these pages, I have never been without the consciousness of a measure of unfitness for the self-imposed task, acknow ledgment of which should here be made. For adequate treatment of the Parables, the artist's eye and the poet's fancy are both needful, and neither belongs to the writer. The lofty imagi nation of such writers as Jeremy Taylor and John Howe, Richard C. Trench and James Hamilton, Thomas Guthrie and William Arnot, had much service to render in the work of Bible exposition. No addition to such service is here contemplated. But the Parables present, besides, a most attractive subject for analytic treatment.
