Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pan-American Railway: Report of the Permanent Pan-American Railway Committee to the Fourth International American Conference, at Buenos Ayres, July, 1910 Since the Argentine lines were prolonged north to the frontier of Bolivia and since the Bolivian links were completed to Uyuni, there now remains only the gap between Cuzco in Peru and Buenos Ayres of 177 miles out of a total distance of miles, allowing for the water transport across Lake Titicaca. If the railway is to be built along the shores of the lake this would require only 100 additional miles. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Railways of South and Central America

Download or read book The Railways of South and Central America written by Frederic M. Halsey and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Railways of South and Central America: A Manual Containing Statistics and Other Information Concerning the Important Railways of South and Central America, Mexico and the West Indies This volume is compiled with the idea of giving a brief description of a number of the railways operating in South and Central America, Mexico and the West Indies, and is divided into three parts: I. South America. II. Mexico, Central America and Panama. III. The West Indies. The method used in compiling this book will commend itself readily to the reader. Each of the three parts is divided into chapters, each of which covers a country, or a group of countries islands, etc.; and contains: (1) a description of the railway development in and other information regarding the country or countries: (2) tables (where possible) and notes giving details as to capitalization, mileage, earnings, financial condition, amount of freight and number of passengers handled, history, location and nature of country traversed by each of the various railway lines under discussion. The Tables in a majority of cases are rendered expressed in Pounds Sterling and American Gold; for convenience sake the basis of $5.00 per is used. At the end of the book will be found Appendices containing additional information of interest. The opening of the Panama Canal in the immediate future and the rapid development of Latin America, particularly Argentine, Brazil, Chili and Uruguay, is attracting a great amount of interest throughout the United States, and the writer, who for a number of years has, in the capacity of Statistician for Messrs. Jas. H. Oliphant & Co., New York and Chicago, assisted Mr. Floyd W. Mundy in the compilation of the "Earning Power of Railroads," has felt the necessity of a volume covering briefly the railways operated in American Countries other than the United States and Canada. Book Chicago North Western Railway

Download or read book Chicago North Western Railway written by Tom Murray and published by . This book was released on with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the time it was merged into the Union Pacific in 1995, the Chicago & North Western was one of the nations oldest surviving railroads, a testament to the Midwestern stoicism with which it had gone about its business since 1859. This illustrated history chronicles how C&NW emerged from a collection of regional carriers to become a strategic link between eastern railroads and the West. Author Tom Murray traces the railroads expansion as it extended secondary lines throughout the Midwest. He also explores C&NWs joint ownership of UP passenger trains and describes how the railroad answered challenges from regional rivals with the "400" series of passenger trains. As fascinating as the story are the hundreds of accompanying illustrations--historical photographs, archival images, route maps, and period print ads. The result is an entertaining and informative history of an iconic Midwestern railroad--a narrative that spans the decades from the 1850s to the 1990s and takes in steam and diesel motive power, freight and passenger operations, and all the key characters, events, and deals that figured in the Chicago & North Westerns rise and eventual demise.

Book The Longest Line on the Map

Download or read book The Longest Line on the Map written by Eric Rutkow and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2019-01-08 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the award-winning author of American Canopy, a dazzling account of the world’s longest road, the Pan-American Highway, and the epic quest to link North and South America, a dramatic story of commerce, technology, politics, and the divergent fates of the Americas in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The Pan-American Highway, monument to a century’s worth of diplomacy and investment, education and engineering, scandal and sweat, is the longest road in the world, passable everywhere save the mythic Darien Gap that straddles Panama and Colombia. The highway’s history, however, has long remained a mystery, a story scattered among government archives, private papers, and fading memories. In contrast to the Panama Canal and its vast literature, the Pan-American Highway—the United States’ other great twentieth-century hemispheric infrastructure project—has become an orphan of the past, effectively erased from the story of the “American Century.” The Longest Line on the Map uncovers this incredible tale for the first time and weaves it into a tapestry that fascinates, informs, and delights. Rutkow’s narrative forces the reader to take seriously the question: Why couldn’t the Americas have become a single region that “is” and not two near irreconcilable halves that “are”? Whether you’re fascinated by the history of the Americas, or you’ve dreamed of driving around the globe, or you simply love world records and the stories behind them, The Longest Line on the Map is a riveting narrative, a lost epic of hemispheric scale.

Book Virago Reprints and Modern Classics

Download or read book Virago Reprints and Modern Classics written by D-M Withers and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-05-20 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reprinting, republishing and re-covering old books in new clothes is an established publishing practice. How are books that have fallen out of taste and favour resituated by publishers, and recognised by readers, as relevant and timely? This Element outlines three historical textures within British culture of the late 1970s and early 1980s – History, Remembrance and Heritage – that enabled Virago's reprint publishing to become a commercial and cultural success. With detailed archival case studies of the Virago Reprint Library, Testament of Youth and the Virago Modern Classics, it elaborates how reprints were profitable for the publisher and moved Virago's books - and the Virago brand name - from the periphery of culture to the centre. Throughout Virago's reprint publishing - and especially with the Modern Classics - the epistemic revelation that women writers were forgotten and could, therefore, be rediscovered, was repeated, again and again, and made culturally productive through the marketplace.
