Book History of the Australian Vegetation

Download or read book History of the Australian Vegetation written by Robert S. Hill and published by University of Adelaide Press. This book was released on 2017-03-01 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Australian vegetation is the end result of a remarkable history of climate change, latitudinal change, continental isolation, soil evolution, interaction with an evolving fauna, fire and most recently human impact. This book presents a detailed synopsis of the critical events that led to the evolution of the unique Australian flora and the wide variety of vegetational types contained within it. The first part of the book details the past continental relationships of Australia, its palaeoclimate, fauna and the evolution of its landforms since the rise to dominance of the angiosperms at the beginning of the Cretaceous period. A detailed summary of the palaeobotanical record is then presented. The palynological record gives an overview of the vegetation and the distribution of important taxa within it, while the complementary macrofossil record is used to trace the evolution of critical taxa. This book will interest graduate students and researchers interested in the evolution of the flora of this fascinating continent.

Book Woody Plants Evolution and Distribution Since the Tertiary

Download or read book Woody Plants Evolution and Distribution Since the Tertiary written by Friedrich Ehrendorfer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paleobotany has enormously expanded the documentation of fossil plant groups, floras and vegetation types, supporting its conclusions by technically much improved analyses of microfossils (pollen) and anatomical details. An increasing quantity and quality of all these informations from the geosciences is available when we follow the history of the biosphere up to the present. Simultaneously, research from the biosciences on the morphology, ecology, distribution, systematics and evolution of extant vascular plants, and on the ecogeographical differentiation of the vegetation cover of our planet, has made enormous progress. Thus, a synthetic geo- and bioscientific approach becomes more and more feasible and urgent for further advances in the many problems of common concern. A symposium organized by the "Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher LEOPOLDINA", attractive to paleo- and neobotanists, stimulated the discussion between specialists of the two disciplines. The main results of the symposium are now presented in this volume: Sixteen international contributions outline the current knowledge about the historical differentiation and evolution of woody plant groups and forests, covering the whole biosphere. This survey, from the beginning of the Tertiary up to the present, is a first systhesis of relevant data from the geo- and biosciences

Book Paleopalynology

  • Author : Alfred Traverse
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2007-05-21
  • ISBN : 1402056109
  • Pages : 816 pages

Download or read book Paleopalynology written by Alfred Traverse and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-21 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides complete coverage of all aspects of the study of all fossil palynomorphs yet studied. It is a profusely illustrated treatment. The book serves both as a student text and general reference work. Palynomorphs yield information about age, geological and biological environment, climate during deposition, and other significant factors about the enclosing rocks. Extant spores and pollen are treated first, preparing the student for more difficult work with fossil sporomorphs and other kinds of palynomorphs. An appendix describes laboratory methods. The glossary, bibliographies and index are useful tools for study of the literature.

Book Nutrition of Eucalypts

    Book Details:
  • Author : PM Attiwill
  • Publisher : CSIRO PUBLISHING
  • Release : 1996-01-01
  • ISBN : 0643105921
  • Pages : 660 pages

Download or read book Nutrition of Eucalypts written by PM Attiwill and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most eucalypts grow naturally on soils low in fertility. Commercial plantations of eucalypts have been established around the world over a range of climates and soils. These two themes are central to this book. Nutrition of Eucalypts provides a comprehensive survey of nutritional ecology of eucalypts in their natural environment and in plantations. The authors, who are all at the forefront of research and development in their fields, are from the various eucalypt growing regions including Brazil, India, China, Spain and Australia. Their text aims at a state-of-the-art presentation. The book includes a key and descriptions for recognising nutrient deficiencies in eucalypts.

Download or read book Flowering Plants Dicotyledons written by Klaus Kubitzki and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 663 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume - the first of this series dealing with angiosperms - comprises the treatments of 73 families, representing three major blocks of the dicotyledons: magnoliids, centrosperms, and hamamelids. These blocks are generally recognized as subclasses in modern textbooks and works of reference. We consider them a convenient means for structuring the hundreds of di cotyledon families, but are far from taking them at face value for biological, let alone mono phyletic entities. Angiosperm taxa above the rank of family are little consolidated, as is easily seen when comparing various modern classifications. Genera and families, in contrast, are comparatively stable units -and they are important in practical terms. The genus is the taxon most frequently recognized as a distinct entity even by the layman, and generic names provide the key to all in formation available about plants. The family is, as a rule, homogeneous enough to conve niently summarize biological information, yet comprehensive enough to avoid excessive re dundance. The emphasis in this series is, therefore, primarily on families and genera.
