Book Kingship and Polity on the Himalayan Borderland

Download or read book Kingship and Polity on the Himalayan Borderland written by Arik Moran and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-09 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the modern transformation of state and society in the Indian Himalaya. Centred on three Rajput-led kingdoms during the transition to British rule (c. 1790-1840) and their interconnected histories, it demonstrates how border making practices engendered a modern reading of 'tradition' that informs communal identities to date. By revising the history of these mountain kings on the basis of extensive archival, textual, and ethnographic research, it offers an alternative to popular and scholarly discourses that grew with the rise of colonial knowledge. This revision ultimately points to the important contribution of borderland spaces to the fabrication of group identities.

Although conventional breeding is well-established and has contributed significantly for varietal improvement of this plant and other Camellia species with ornamental value, yet applications of biotechnology are required to intervene some of the issues where conventional breeding is restricted particularly for woody plants such as tea. It is note-worthy to mention that some amounts of biotechnology works in several facets of tea and its wild species have also been done. In the present book, a state-of-the-art on various aspects of breeding and biotechnology has been complied in eight chapters. Book Living My Convictions

Download or read book Living My Convictions written by Shanta Kumar and published by Prabhat Prakashan. This book was released on 2022-02-22 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many friends had urged me to write my autobiography. I had started writing last year and now I have a lot of time to complete this project. I have decided that after concluding my autobiography, I would give complete attention to ‘Vishranti’. It is a pleasure writing my autobiography. It feels good to revisit and rewind through my thoughts and through my pen – the life that I lived, journey that I traversed for many years, sights seen and experienced and losses and gains along the way. Last year when I started working on my autobiography, I was not sure about disclosing these incidents since some senior leaders would not be too pleased. But I am determined now, since I am out of active politics and my presence in politics is going to be in name only. I have been telling my friends that I am going to be a guest artist in politics now. I was a politician earlier so my freedom of expression had to be restricted. Now, I am a writer first and then someone else, therefore it is my right to enjoy and employ a writer’s freedom of expression. I have fully utilised that right in writing my autobiography, and many things unsaid have been laid out in the open. I have lived my life. I have lived fully and joyously. I have lived this life and told its story and shared my life experiences in abundant details. I will dedicate the rest of my life to God Almighty in Vivekanand Sewa Kendra. I will wait for the moment when I fulfil all my duties and go back to where I came from. Truthfully speaking, I would go smiling and laughing with a song in my heart and a spring in my step.

Book A Flowering Tree and Other Oral Tales from India

Download or read book A Flowering Tree and Other Oral Tales from India written by A. K. Ramanujan and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book of oral tales from the south Indian region of Kannada represents the culmination of a lifetime of research by A. K. Ramanujan, one of the most revered scholars and writers of his time. The result of over three decades' labor, this long-awaited collection makes available for the first time a wealth of folktales from a region that has not yet been adequately represented in world literature. Ramanujan's skill as a translator, his graceful writing style, and his profound love and understanding of the subject enrich the tales that he collected, translated, and interpreted. With a written literature recorded from about 800 A.D., Kannada is rich in mythology, devotional and secular poetry, and more recently novels and plays. Ramanujan, born in Mysore in 1929, had an intimate knowledge of the language. In the 1950s, when working as a college lecturer, he began collecting these tales from everyone he could--servants, aunts, schoolteachers, children, carpenters, tailors. In 1970 he began translating and interpreting the tales, a project that absorbed him for the next three decades. When Ramanujan died in 1993, the translations were complete and he had written notes for about half of the tales. With its unsentimental sympathies, its laughter, and its delightfully vivid sense of detail, the collection stands as a significant and moving monument to Ramanujan's memory as a scholar and writer.

Book Resisting Dispossession

Download or read book Resisting Dispossession written by Ranjana Padhi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-20 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book brings to the reader a set of political and social narratives woven around people’s resistance against big dams, mining and industrial projects, in short, displacement and dispossession in Odisha, India. This saga of dispossession abounds with stories and narratives of ordinary peasants, forest dwellers, fisher folk and landless wage laborers, which make the canvas of resistance history more complete. The book foregrounds these protagonists and the events that marked their lives; they live in the coastal plains as well as the hilly and forested areas of south and south-west Odisha. The authors have chronicled the development trajectory from the construction of the Hirakud Dam in the 1950s to the entry of corporations like POSCO and Vedanta in contemporary times. It thus covers extensive ground in interrogating the nature of industrialization being ushered into the state from post-independent India till today. The book depicts how and why people resist the development juggernaut in a state marked with endemic poverty. In unraveling this complex reality, the book conveys the world view of a vast section of people whose lives and livelihoods are tied up to land, forests, mountains, seas, rivers, lakes, ponds, trees, vines and bushes. These narratives fill a yawning gap in resistance literature in the context of Odisha. In doing so, they resonate with the current predicament of people in other mineral-rich states in Eastern India. The book is an endeavour to bring Odisha on the map of resistance politics and social movements in India and across the world.

Book Pilgrimage in Tibet

Download or read book Pilgrimage in Tibet written by Alex McKay and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Western image of Tibet as a sacred land is in many ways a mythical construction. But the Tibetans themselves have traditionally mapped out their land in terms of areas of sacred space, and pilgrimage, ensuring a high degree of mobility within all classes of Tibetan society. Pilgrims travelled to local, regional, and national centres throughout recorded Tibetan history. In recent years, pilgrimage has resumed in areas where it had been forbidden by the Chinese authorities, and has now become one of the most prominent religious expressions of Tibetan national identity. In this major new work, leading scholars of Asian pilgrimage traditions discuss historical and contemporary aspects of pilgrimage within the Tibetan cultural world. Myths and legends, material conditions, textual sources, a modern pilgrim's impressions, political and economic influences, biographies and contemporary developments - all these and many other issues are examined here. The result is an informative and often entertaining work which contributes greatly to our knowledge of the history and culture of Tibet as well as the wider issues of religious power and practice.
