Book Element Distribution in Some Shelf and Eugeosynclinal Black Shales

Download or read book Element Distribution in Some Shelf and Eugeosynclinal Black Shales written by James David Vine and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The content and association of minor elements in different black-shale environments. Emission spectrographic analyses of 220 samples of black shale from Pennsylvanian rocks of the shelf area in the Eastern Interior coal province and from Ordovician and Silurian rocks of the western North America eugeosyncline have been compared. Some samples of both the shelf group and the eugeosynclinal group have high contents of vanadium, chromium, zinc, silver, and moderately high contents of nickel and copper. High molybdenum and nickel contents are characteristic of the samples from the shelf; high barium content is characteristic of the samples from the eugeosyncline.

It describes the formation of animal and plant fossils in marine and terrestrial settings and how this affects deciphering the ecology and extinction of past lifeforms and the environments in which they lived. The volume emphasises a process approach to taphonomy and reviews the taphonomic behaviour of all important taxa, plant and animal. It will be useful to anyone interested in the preservation of fossils and the formation of fossil assemblages, but it is aimed primarily at advanced students and professionals working in paleontology, stratigraphy, sedimentology, climate modeling and biogeochemistry.

Part contains papers on sedimentation, fossil distribution, and the origin of the concretions. Part II on paleobotany includes studies on soft-sediment cementation enclosing Mazon plant fossils and diversity and stratigraphic Age of the Mazon Creek flora. The papers in Part III focus on invertebrate paleontology. It includes studies on soft-bodied coelenterates in the Pennsylvanian of Illinois and the centipedes (Chilopoda) of the Mazon Creek. Part IV on vertebrate paleontology includes papers on fishes of the Mazon Creek Fauna and Amphibamus grandiceps as a possible frog ancestor.

Book Predator Prey Interactions in the Fossil Record

Download or read book Predator Prey Interactions in the Fossil Record written by Patricia H. Kelley and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Foreword: "Predator-prey interactions are among the most significant of all organism-organism interactions....It will only be by compiling and evaluating data on predator-prey relations as they are recorded in the fossil record that we can hope to tease apart their role in the tangled web of evolutionary interaction over time. This volume, compiled by a group of expert specialists on the evidence of predator-prey interactions in the fossil record, is a pioneering effort to collate the information now accumulating in this important field. It will be a standard reference on which future study of one of the central dynamics of ecology as seen in the fossil record will be built." (Richard K. Bambach, Professor Emeritus, Virginia Tech, Associate of the Botanical Museum, Harvard University)
