Throughout his artistic career, Lowry used street furniture to brilliant effect. He was a master of observation and composition. Lamp-posts, telegraph poles, flag poles, fences (and sometimes just vertical posts with no apparent use) form an important part of Lowry's busy industrial scenes. As his work developed, lamps became a subject in their own right and became the focus of some of his later quiet, solitary works. The evidence of Lowry's careful thought about lamps and lamp posts is evident in his response to young artists asking for career advice as well as it is in the painting: 'no need to go to London to become a famous painter. You won't find better lamp-posts there.' This book examines an important aspect of Lowry's art for the first time. It is written by Richard Mayson who was brought up in Lowry's home-village of Mottram-in-Longdendale. Mayson has a life-long passion for street lamps and street furniture. Taking some of Lowry's best-known works as a reference, this book highlights Lowry's use of lamps and street furniture in his handling of composition, perspective and colour. The expression of solitude, an aspect of Lowry's life and often conveyed in his later work, is also considered. The eldest son of a wealthy mill owner, he entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1800 at the age of 24, and thereafter committed himself to painting nature out of doors. His "six-footers," such as The Hay Wainand The Leaping Horse, were designed to promote landscape as a subject and to stand out in the Academy's Annual Exhibition. Despite this, he sold few paintings in his lifetime and was elected a Royal Academician late in his career. With texts by leading authorities on the artist, this handsome book looks at the freedom of Constable's late works and records his enormous contribution to the English landscape tradition. John Constable(1776-1837) is one of Britain's best-known artists, and is often considered one of the greatest landscape painters of all time. He was born near the River Stour in Suffolk, an area the artist depicted so frequently that it is referred to as "Constable country." Pastoral scenes were unfashionable at the time and Constable struggled to establish himself as a painter. He was finally elected a Royal Academician in 1829, and in 1832, he exhibited The Opening of Waterloo Bridge--an effort 13 years in the making--at the Summer Exhibition.

It was dreamt up towards the end of WW2, when Brenda Rawnsley and her husband Derek had the idea of bringing contemporary art to young children by putting 'good' art into schools. Initially British artists were commissioned to produce one lithograph each, John Nash, Paul Nash, Henry Moore, John Tunnard, Barbara Jones, L.S Lowry and many more. These were issued in a series of standard-sized prints to which schools could subscribe. A war widow at the age of 30, Brenda took up the project again immediately after the war and embarked on an even more ambitious project to sign up the great European artists of her day. She travelled extensively around France - not an easy task at the time - and signed up the likes of Picasso, Braque, Leger, Matisse and Dufy to contribute works 'pour les enfants anglais' as Picasso said. Tragically the project was not a commercial success, many of the schools finding the works too avant garde and modern. However The School Prints project should be seen in the context of attempts to democratise British art in the mid-20th Century, as well as part of the renaissance of lithography that was taking place at that time.
