Book excerpt: On the 29th of Sept, 2009, an earthquake and resultant tsunami devastated the islands of Samoa, American Samoa and Northern Tonga, killing 189 people, wiping out entire villages and causing economic losses estimated conservatively at USD $200 million - making the Pacific Tsunami, the "deadliest documented tsunami in the entire region." A wave of rescue and relief assistance from many nations, organisations and individuals began almost immediately afterward. An informative, sensitively articulated and beautifully woven story about the 2009 Pacific Tsunami that shares the voices and experiences of survivors, rescuers, medical teams and aid workers. Not merely a documentary but an interconnected series of tales that records with color and feeling, a significant moment Pacific history. Includes the voices of survivors from NZ, Australia, the UK and Germany. Interwoven first-hand accounts from over 180 people.

Book Pacific Identities and Well Being

Download or read book Pacific Identities and Well Being written by Margaret Nelson Agee and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-05 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filling a significant gap in the cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary literature within the field of Pasifika (Polynesian) and Maori identities and mental health, this volume focuses on bridging mental health related research and practice within the indigenous communities of the South Pacific. Much of the content reflects both differences from and relationships with the dominant Western theories and practices so often unsuccessfully applied with these groups. The contributors represent both experienced researchers and practitioners and address topics such as research examining traditional and emerging Pasifika identities; contemporary research and practice in working with Pasifika youth and adolescents; culturally-appropriate approaches for working with Pasifika adults; and practices in supervision that have been developed by Maori and Pasifika practitioners. Chapters include practice scenarios, research reports, analyses of topical issues, and discussions about the appropriateness of applying Western theory in other cultural contexts. As Pasifika cultures are still primarily oral cultures, the works of several leading Maori and Pasifika poets that give voice to the changing identities and contemporary challenges within Pacific communities are also included.

Book Narrative and Identity Construction in the Pacific Islands

Download or read book Narrative and Identity Construction in the Pacific Islands written by Farzana Gounder and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprising of more than twenty five percent of the world’s known languages, the Pacific is considered to be the most linguistically diverse region in the world. What unifies the region is the culture of storytelling, which provides a fundamental means for perpetuating cultural knowledge across generations. The volume brings together linguists, literary theorists, anthropologists and historians to explore the Pacific peoples’ constructions of identities through narrative. Chapters are organized under three themes: fine grained analysis at the storyworld level, the interactional context of narrative telling, and finally, the interconnections between narrative and cultural memory. The volume reflects the Pacific region’s rich linguistic and cultural diversity, with discussions on the narrativization patterns in Australian and New Zealand English, Palmerston Island and Pitkern-Norfl’k English, Fiji Hindi, Hawaiian, Samoan, Solomon Island Pidgin, the Australian Aboriginal languages Jaminjung and Kriol, the Micronesian languages Mortlockese and Guam Chamorros, and the Vanuatuan languages Auluan, Neverver and Sa.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book migrates through continents, regions, nations, and villages, in order to tell the stories of diverse kinds of nomadic dwellers. It departs from Africa, en routes itself toward Asia, Oceania, Europe, and culminates in the Americas, with the territories of Latin America, Canada, and the United States. The volume travels through worn out pathways of migration that continue to be threaded upon today, and theologically reflects on a wide range of migratory aims that result also in diverse forms of indigenization of Christianity. Among the main issues being considered are: How have globalization and migration affected the theological self-understanding of Christianity? In light of globalization and migration, how is the evangelizing mission of Christianity to be understood and carried out? What ecclesiastical reforms if any are required to enable the church to meet present-day challenges?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book's stories and images invite readers to honor and learn from those lost in tragic tsunami events. Each person has a history, an account of things said and done, and preserving these stories helps people to understand the past and make thoughtful decisions for the future. Many people believe that there is good in everything that happens; even tragedies can have positive outcomes. This is certainly true for Hilo, which has been shaped physically, culturally, and economically by the tsunamis of 1946 and 1960. In the waves' wake, lives and livelihoods were lost. Hilo would reel from the catastrophes, but the spirit of resilience would shine through, and Hilo would emerge not unscathed, but not undone. Strength and compassion emerge from the stories of fate in how people responded to one another and how they rebuilt.

Book Possessing Polynesians

Download or read book Possessing Polynesians written by Maile Renee Arvin and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-08 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From their earliest encounters with Indigenous Pacific Islanders, white Europeans and Americans asserted an identification with the racial origins of Polynesians, declaring them to be racially almost white and speculating that they were of Mediterranean or Aryan descent. In Possessing Polynesians Maile Arvin analyzes this racializing history within the context of settler colonialism across Polynesia, especially in Hawai‘i. Arvin argues that a logic of possession through whiteness animates settler colonialism, by which both Polynesia (the place) and Polynesians (the people) become exotic, feminized belongings of whiteness. Seeing whiteness as indigenous to Polynesia provided white settlers with the justification needed to claim Polynesian lands and resources. Understood as possessions, Polynesians were and continue to be denied the privileges of whiteness. Yet Polynesians have long contested these classifications, claims, and cultural representations, and Arvin shows how their resistance to and refusal of white settler logic have regenerated Indigenous forms of recognition.

Download or read book Tsunami written by James Goff and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2021 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Tsunamis, the giant waves that periodically engulf coastal areas and even the shores of lakes and rivers, have had a major impact on the world. Not only have they caused countless deaths, but have changed nations, societies and cultures from prehistoric to modern times. This book describes the science of tsunamis and the many ways they can be generated ranging from earthquakes, to volcanic eruptions and explosions, to landslides and others. It also explains how the waves travel across oceans at the speed of a jet airplane and how they focus or disperse their incredible energy. It delves into the clues that ancient tsunamis have left behind to be unraveled by modern science so that we can better understand not only what has happened in the past, but also what will happen in the future. The book also explores the human side of tsunami disasters looking at their effect on the residents of impacted communities by recounting the amazing true stories of survival, heroism and tragic loss. It discusses and provides examples of what works in mitigation, preparedness, warning, response and recovery from tsunamis, what doesn't work, and what needs to be done. It contains little-known stories about scientists struggling to better understand these catastrophic waves, while fighting government ignorance and reluctance to take action, as well as amazing chance discoveries, and the continued quest to learn more and become better prepared, as every year the odds of yet another catastrophic tsunami increase - It is not if, but when!"--
