Book The Pacific Islands and Trade in Services

Download or read book The Pacific Islands and Trade in Services written by Bregt Natens and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pacific Islands are small, developing island states which are challenged by their small size, geographical isolation and the unvaried production possibilities. Increased trade in services, facilitated by the ICT revolution, may provide for some much needed economic development. After assessing the offensive potential for services in this complex region, this paper addresses the services liberalisation negotiations in which the Pacific Islands are partaking, both intra- and inter-regionally. While intra-regional economic integration is insufficiently moving forward, the on-going inter-regional liberalisation negotiations, i.e. with the European Union, and with Australia and New Zealand, are unlikely to cater for the Pacific's offensive interests in services. Therefore, and to avoid excessive negotiation costs and implementation difficulties, it is argued that the Pacific would better halt all on-going talks and seek accession to one of two mega-regional trade negotiations around the Pacific rim: the Trans-Pacific Partnership or the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership.

Book Pacific Island Countries

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International trade is vital for economic prosperity in Pacific island countries, but their trade performance has been weak over the past decade with the exception of resource-rich countries. Small country size and remoteness from global economic centers may have contributed to this relatively poor performance. However, the emergence of Asia as a global economic center presents Pacific island countries with an unprecedented opportunity to develop trade with Asia, particularly in tourism for a number of PICs. Moreover, if a strong two-way linkage is established between tourism and agriculture, Pacific island countries stands a better chance to improve broad-based growth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the people from the New Hebrides (Vanuatu) and the Solomon Islands who left their homes to work in the French colony of New Caledonia has long remained a missing piece of Pacific Islands history. Now Dorothy Shineberg has brought these laboreres to life by painstakingly assembling fragments from a wide variety of scattered records and documents. She tells the story of their recruitment, then sketches the workers’ lives in New Caledonia, describing the contractual arrangements, the kinds of work they did, their living conditions, how they spent their free time, the large numbers who sickened and died, and the choice at the end of the contract to remain in the colony as free workers or to return home. Throughout the book she throws light on the controversy about the recruiting of the Islanders: were they kidnapped? Or did they choose to leave home? If so, what motivated them? Evidently the Islanders’ cheap labor contributed to the development of the French colony, but how did the episode affect them and their homeland? The People Trade offers readers a revealing new picture of a long neglected side of the Pacific Islands labor trade.

Download or read book Sailors and Traders written by Alastair Couper and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2008-12-09 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a senior scholar and master mariner, Sailors and Traders is the first comprehensive account of the maritime peoples of the Pacific. It focuses on the sailors who led the exploration and settlement of the islands and New Zealand and their seagoing descendants, providing along the way new material and unique observations on traditional and commercial seagoing against the background of major periods in Pacific history. The book begins by detailing the traditions of sailors, a group whose way of life sets them apart. Like all others who live and work at sea, Pacific mariners face the challenges of an often harsh environment, endure separation from their families for months at a time, revere their vessels, and share a singular attitude to risk and death. The period of prehistoric seafaring is discussed using archaeological data, interpretations from interisland exchanges, experimental voyaging, and recent DNA analysis. Sections on the arrival of foreign exploring ships centuries later concentrate on relations between visiting sailors and maritime communities. The more intrusive influx of commercial trading and whaling ships brought new technology, weapons, and differences in the ethics of trade. The successes and failures of Polynesian chiefs who entered trading with European-type ships are recounted as neglected aspects of Pacific history. As foreign-owned commercial ships expanded in the region so did colonialism, which was accompanied by an increase in the number of sailors from metropolitan countries and a decrease in the employment of Pacific islanders on foreign ships. Eventually small-scale island entrepreneurs expanded interisland shipping, and in 1978 the regional Pacific Forum Line was created by newly independent states. This was welcomed as a symbolic return to indigenous Pacific ocean linkages. The book’s final sections detail the life of the modern Pacific seafarer. Most Pacific sailors in the global maritime labor market return home after many months at sea, bringing money, goods, a wider perspective of the world, and sometimes new diseases. Each of these impacts is analyzed, particularly in the case of Kiribati, a major supplier of labor to foreign ships.

Book Trade and Maritime Transport Trends in the Pacific

Download or read book Trade and Maritime Transport Trends in the Pacific written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2020-11-01 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study seeks to help fill knowledge gaps on maritime trade in the Pacific. It examines trade flows in Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Timor-Leste, Tonga, and Vanuatu. The study looks at shared constraints, such as the effects of climate change and exposure to external shocks, and identifies synergistic and regional approaches to address them. It aims to inform long-term planning for trade facilitation across the region by identifying key questions for governments and development partners to consider. It also addresses core questions including how trade flows in the region are changing, how growth will impact seaport operations and shipping services, and how trade efficiency can be improved.
