Book New Challenges and Opportunities in European Asian Relations

Download or read book New Challenges and Opportunities in European Asian Relations written by Bibek Chand and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-20 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the emerging bidirectional interactions between Europe—primarily the EU—and Asia in the fields of political economy, development, environmental policy, security, diplomacy, and inter-institutional relations within the context of two recent global trends: the rise of China and the growing withdrawal of the U.S. from multilateral commitments. The volume incorporates nine different aspects and dimensions of Asian-European relations. In recent decades, Asia has (re-)gained rising importance on the world stage, which also entails closer interconnections with Europe. In an age of receding American global leadership and reduced commitments to its European allies, the EU and its member states have increasingly become more open to seeking and considering new partnerships. The rising economic prowess of Asia has made it of particular interest for European states. The book’s focus lies on potential challenges and opportunities in the bidirectional interactions between European and Asian states and institutions.

Book Europe and the Challenge of the Asia Pacific

Download or read book Europe and the Challenge of the Asia Pacific written by Brian Bridges and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bridges (politics and sociology, Lingnan College, Hong Kong) analyzes the contemporary economic, political, and security relations between western Europe and the Asia Pacific regions. After surveying the historical legacies of colonialism and de-colonization, he describes the successive economic challenges, first from Japan, then the newly industrializing economies of Asia, and most recently southeastern Asia and China. He concludes that the future of relations between the two regions will be shaped by moves toward greater European integration, how Asia responds to the current financial crisis, and the development of new dialogue between them. Book Alliances in Asia and Europe

Download or read book Alliances in Asia and Europe written by Elena Atanassova-Cornelis and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-10-10 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the transformation of the American-led alliances, as well as of US allies’ responses to potential American disengagement from regional security amid the rising Russian and Chinese threats. The post-Cold War international order has led to three challenges for the West. The first challenge was the ending of the Cold War, which had served as the fundamental rationale of the US-centred alliance systems in both Europe and Asia. The second challenge was that while the fear of US disengagement in the post-Cold War era was initially about its political willingness, the relative decline of the US has gradually turned the question into that of capability. And the third challenge is that for the first time since very long, a war in which one of the great (nuclear) powers is involved takes place on European territory. In Europe, the immediate consequence of the war has been a strengthening of NATO. In Asia and the Indo-Pacific, regional reactions to the war have been much more muted, for the division between “friends and foes” remains less clear-cut than in Europe. The chapters in this volume bridge the dynamics in the European and Asian theatres and provide a comparative framework for examining security alignments amid the shifting strategic context of the Indo-Pacific. With 4 new chapters and a revised Introduction, this book will be of great interest to students and researchers of Politics and International Relations, Asian and European studies. The other chapters were originally published in Asian Affairs.

Book Asia and Europe in the 21st Century

Download or read book Asia and Europe in the 21st Century written by Rahul Mishra and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-25 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How are the rising mutual concerns of Asian and European countries shaping their approaches to the international order? Contributors to this volume discuss emerging critical issues in International relations, including the Indo-Pacific constructs, China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), and the progress of established regional security mechanisms like the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. They also compare western and non-western approaches to these issues, with a holistic perspective on the origins and evolutions of these approaches. Both the Indo-Pacific constructs and BRI present a remarkable set of opportunities for Europe as well as Asia. This book presents key implications of the changing politico-security dynamics in the two regions from the perspectives of both Asian and European scholars and theoretical traditions. A must-read for scholars of International Relations with a focus on relations between Asia and Europe.

Book The European Union in the Asia Pacific

Download or read book The European Union in the Asia Pacific written by Weiqing Song and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2019-02-20 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the mid-1990s, the European Union has defined the Asia Pacific as one of its key strategic targets on its ambitious road towards a global power. Over the past decades, big changes have taken place on both sides and the wider world. It’s high time to evaluate the EU’s performance in its Asian policy. In fact, the EU is at crossroads with its Asia Pacific policy. On several aspects, the EU is compelled to redefine its interests and roles, and rethink its strategies and policies towards the dynamic and ever important Asia Pacific region. This volume addresses this theme, by elaborating the general context, major issues and countries in the EU’s Asia Pacific policy. It covers issue areas of traditional security, economy and trade, public diplomacy, and human security and focuses on the EU’s relations with China, Japan, the ASEAN countries, and Australasia.

Book The European Union and Asia

Download or read book The European Union and Asia written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents the first, in-depth, inter-disciplinary, analysis of the past, present and future of the European Union’s relations with countries, non-state actors and other partners across the Asia-Pacific region. The book is situated in the developing, interdisciplinary, discourse of EU foreign policy towards countries and regions across Asia, and it offers a research-led critique of the construction and the elements of the EU-Asia ‘political space’. Written by an international team of experts from both Asia and Europe, the volume investigates the historical and cultural background, as well as diverse representations and imaginations in regard to the Asia-Europe inter-continental dialogue. The book examines the varied patterns, policies and priorities of the contemporary political, economic and cultural relations linking the EU with its interlocutors in Asia. Moreover, this collection throws light on a selected number of issues pertinent to current EU-Asia interaction, such as human rights promotion, learning and educational exchange, and the role of the mass media in the construction of Asia-Europe relations. The twelve chapters in this book cover a wide scope of subjects, including the EU’s Relations with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the summitry of the Asia-Europe Meetings (ASEM), EU foreign policy choices in Asia and EU contacts with Central Asia, Australia and New Zealand. This text is of interest to undergraduate and postgraduate students, lecturers, the business community, decision-makers and practitioners in Politics, European Studies, Asia-Pacific Studies, International Relations, Law, Human Rights and Business Studies.
