Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Overture of Angels Upon this city broke the morning rays of the Advent. A venerable priest, Zacharias, belonging to the retinue of the Temple, had spent his whole life in the quiet offices of religion. He was mar ried, but childless. To him happened a surprising thing. It was his turn to burn incense, - the most honorable function of the priestly office. Upon the great altar of sacrifice, outside the holy place, the burnt-offering was placed. At a signal the priest came forth, and, taking fire from this altar, he entered the inner and more sacred place of the Temple, and there, before the altar of incense, putting the fragrant gum upon the coals, he swung the censer, filling the air with wreaths of smoke. The people who had gathered on the outside, as soon' as the smoke ascended silently sent uptheir prayers, of which the incense was a symbol. And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord, standing on the right side of the altar. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Temptation of Paul Hindemith

Download or read book The Temptation of Paul Hindemith written by Siglind Bruhn and published by Pendragon Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focuses on the five-tiered representational structure in which the hermit's conflict and vindication present themselves through Hindemith's opera. Bruhn argues that the opera presents something akin to a confession of the composer's inner conflicts and his decision not to become involved in the Nazi confrontation. Three sections discuss: the dilemma of social responsibility vs. the eremitic quest in the lives of Saint Antony of Egypt, the fictional painter Mathis, and Paul Hindemith; hermits, anchorites, and ascetics as portrayed in literature, art, and music; and the form, content, and interpretation of Mathis der Maler. Appendices include synopses and translations of several operas by Hindemith. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Einojuhani Rautavaara (1928–2016) has been called Finland’s most notable musical export after Sibelius. His prolific output includes eleven operas; eight symphonies; eleven concertos; choral works for the Orthodox, Lutheran, and Roman Catholic churches; secular choral works; chamber music; vocal solos; and keyboard works. Many of these works were commissioned by internationally known performers and ensembles including Vladimir Ashkenazy, Richard Stoltzman, Hilary Hahn, Anne Akiko Meiers, Gerald Finley, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Juilliard School of Music Orchestra. Perhaps most frequently performed are his Cantus Arcticus, a concerto for recorded arctic birds and orchestra, Angel of Light, his seventh symphony, and the Lorca choral suite depicting Death as a stalker in a Spanish village. Rautavaara’s Journey in Music is divided into two sections; the first a biography and discussion of works that show his various style changes, from neoclassical, to twelve-tone, to neoromantic, and finally to a personal expressive style combining elements of twelve-tone and tonality. The second part divides his works by genre and gives more detailed information of stylistic analysis, libretto, provenance, and, often, reception.
