These are also mainly self-made men. They are wholly self-made in the se'nse that they are the architects of their own fortunes; and they are also leavened with a leaven of that element in self making which consists in self-education. It is easy, therefore, to see what we ought to expect to find in the San F ran cisco of to-day: a community of men who left the United States twenty years ago in search of fortune, and since have been sturdily battling in its pursuit; who have been shut up within themselves dur ing that period; who have received into their circle and quietly absorbed a con tinuous immigration of later date, under whose influence some features of the old er society may have been modified, with out the introduction of new features in their stead.
