Book The Outlook for Gold

Download or read book The Outlook for Gold written by Charles Morgan Webb and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1931, this book was written at a time when the utility and value of gold was under great scrutiny. Global financial circles were discussing the necessity of reducing the price of gold, pressing for the return of Britain to a gold standard and imposing a managed currency. Against a background of post-war monetary and financial dislocations, the author argues that the unique monetary quality of gold is its liquidity, and its universal acceptability as a natural form of money throughout the world.

Book Do Investors Forecast Fat Firms

Download or read book Do Investors Forecast Fat Firms written by Joseph Farrell and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional economic theory assumes that firms always minimize costs given the output they produce. News articles and interviews with executives, however, indicate that firms from time to time engage in cost-cutting exercises. One popular belief is that firms cut costs when they are in economic distress, and grow fat when they are relatively wealthy. We explore this hypothesis by studying the response of the stock market values of gold mining companies to changes in gold prices. The value of a cost-minimizing, profit-maximizing firm is convex in the price of a competitively supplied input or output, but we find that the stock values of many gold mining companies are concave in the price of gold. We show that this is consistent with fat accumulation when a firm grows wealthy. We then address a number of potential alternative explanations and discuss where fat in these companies might reside

Book Global Gold Production Touching Ground

Download or read book Global Gold Production Touching Ground written by Boris Verbrugge and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-05-04 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, gold mining has moved into increasingly remote corners of the globe. Aside from the expansion of industrial gold mining, many countries have simultaneously witnessed an expansion of labor-intensive and predominantly informal artisanal and small-scale gold mining. Both trends are usually studied in isolation, which contributes to a dominant image of a dual gold mining economy. Counteracting this dominant view, this volume adopts a global perspective, and demonstrates that both industrial gold mining and artisanal and small-scale gold mining are functionally integrated into a global gold production system. It couples an analysis of structural trends in global gold production (expansion, informalization, and technological innovation) to twelve country case studies that detail how global gold production becomes embedded in institutional and ecological structures.
