Book excerpt: " In the United States, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer and is the second leading cause of cancer deaths. If breast cancer is detected in its earliest stage, women have better treatment options, and long term outcomes. The American Cancer Society (ACS) reported that 182,460 new cases of invasive breast cancer were expected to occur in women in the United States, and of these cases they estimated that 40,030 women in the United States would die from breast cancer in 2008, the second cause of cancer related deaths in women after lung cancer (ACS, 2008). In 2009, 192,370 U.S. women were diagnosed with invasive breast cancer and a total of 40,170 women died of the disease that year (Stern, 2010). This number was slightly higher than the projected number of breast cancer deaths for 2008. The American Cancer Society's Facts & Figures report for 2009-2010, estimated an additional 62,280 women will be diagnosed with in-situ breast cancer in 2009. Breast cancer death rates among African American women range from 20.9 in Rhode Island to 40.0 in Louisiana (ACS, 2009). ..." -- from Introduction.

It draws upon the West African concept, Sankofa, which loosely translates to "return to the source and fetch." The griots, through their stories, fetch salvageable and knowledge-laden valuables linked to their resilience and rebuilding efforts. Thus, the Sankofa concept serves as a lens for examining leadership in the aftermath of disaster; it serves as an intense magnifier and illuminator of lessons considered relevant and profoundly valuable to guide one's understanding of how to lead in, through and beyond disaster. Past experiences yield teachable moments. The lessons excerpted from these moments reveal the sources from which the leaders draw the resilience to recover from trauma, the vision to guide others, the courage to challenge the status quo, the imagination to make a way where there is none and the stamina to press beyond peril toward an unpromised future. Called to Sankofa rejects the assumption that "all was broken" in education--either before or due to Katrina, and through the storytellers, we are reminded that to rebuild things better than before, one must take stock of, extract meaning from and be guided by what constituted the "before." In March, 1989, Joyce Washington Ivery was diagnosed with breast cancer. One year later she had a saline implant placed in her chest cavity. The implant was removed in August, 2005, fifteen years later, and replaced with a tummy flap. While in the hospital, hurricane Katrina came along with its forceful winds and flooding waters. Joyce was all alone and forced to spend one night in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. Amidst the thousands of people there, she and her cousin crossed paths; and he and his family drove her to Natchez, MS, September 1, 2005, where she has lived since that time. The challenges of salvaging whatever possible and moving to a new city and state were stupendous but not surmountable. In 1994, she organized Edna B. and Joyce Fay Washington Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. And on May 25, 2019, the Foundation convened its Annual Meeting in New Orleans, LAin celebration of twenty-five (25) years of service. The very first program organized by the Foundation was a support group – Sisters In Touch – which to this day still exists. Eighteen of the survivors who are actively involved shared their thoughts about how the group has positively affected their lives. Preceding each of the twelve chapters is heartfelt, descriptive poetry; beginning with “The Pretty Pink Ribbon” and ending with “Eight Forty Six”.

Nationally, women of color experience higher rates of invasive breast cancer and mortality. The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of breast cancer screening among women of color (African American, Hispanic, and Pacific Islander) in order to promote preventive and supportive measures. Puget Sound Affiliates of Susan G. Komen explored breast cancer and breast cancer screening habits among 16 counties in Washington State through focus groups and semi-structured interviews in a community needs assessment in 2011. Findings from the community needs assessment identified counties with disproportionately high occurrence of newly invasive breast cancer diagnosis or invasive breast cancer, and worse outcomes among women of color. Methods. Using qualitative data provided by Puget Sound Affiliates of Susan G. Komen, this study explored the perceptions of 68 women of color ranging in age from 25 to 74. The data was analyzed using content analysis in Microsoft Excel and Nvivo 10. Evaluation. Finding contributed to a greater understanding of the perceptions of breast cancer among women of color to improve breast health outcomes within the community. Clinical Implication and Recommendation. The analysis of the qualitative data provided an informative guide to improve breast health care and implement new measures within communities among women of color through education and outreach.
