Book excerpt: In 1870 Bismarck ordered the Prussian Army to invade France, inciting one of the most dramatic conflicts in European history. It transformed not only the states-system of the Continent but the whole climate of European moral and political thought. The overwhelming triumph of German military might, evoking general admiration and imitation, introduced an era of power politics, which was to reach its disastrous climax in 1914. First published in 1961 and now with a new introduction, The Franco-Prussian War is acknowledged as the definitive history of one of the most dramatic and decisive conflicts in the history of Europe.

Book The Origin of the War of 1870 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Origin of the War of 1870 Classic Reprint written by Charles Wentworth Dilke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin of the War of 1870 No doubt the King was sincere when he told the Emperor of the French in 1868 that he had decided to maintain the then existing state of things in Germany, and that he was resolved upon a permanent peace. At the same time, he knew the necessity for the active military preparations of his country, which were at that time being rapidly pushed on. He could not be safe against the changing moods and against the domestic necessities of Napoleon III. But if the policy of dis armament, which at one moment attracted Louis Napoleon, had been maintained without a check in public and in private, it would have been difficult for the military advisers of the King of Prussia to cause him to consent to war, and so it would if at the last the French Ministry had been unanimously and firmly desirous of maintaining a peace for which alone their previous action had prepared. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illustrated with colour maps and images, this is an introduction to the Franco-Prussian War, a war that marked the beginning of the creation of modern Europe. The Franco-Prussian War started in 1870 when Otto von Bismarck engineered a war with the French Second Empire under Napoleon III, as part of his plan to unite Prussia with the southern German states as a new Germany. Stephen Badsey examines the build-up, battles, and impact of the war, which was an overwhelming Prussian victory with massive consequences. The French Second Empire collapsed, Napoleon III became an exile in Britain, and King Wilhelm I was proclaimed Emperor of the new united Germany. In the peace settlement that followed, Germany gained the eastern French provinces of Alsace and Lorraine, areas that were to provide a bone of contention for years to come. Updated for the new edition with revisions from the author and new images throughout, this is an accessible introduction to the largest and most important war fought in Europe between the age of Napoleon and the First World War.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origins of the War of 1870: New Documents From the German Archives The Franco-German War of 1870, like the World War of 1914, was preceded by a diplomatic battle lasting barely twelve days - from the "bursting of the Spanish bomb" at Paris on July 3, down to the virtual declaration of war in the French Chambers on July 15. The French side of the history of those agonizing twelve days is now comparatively well known, even in its details, thanks to the publications of Gramont, Benedetti, Ollivier, La Gorce, and others. But the German side is still bristling with unsolved problems. Bismarck's statements in his memoirs and oral reminiscences are notoriously unreliable and misleading; and the other sources hitherto available - chiefly the diaries of Busch, Abeken's papers, Keudell's memoirs, and the letters of King William and Prince Karl Anton of Hohenzollem - offer most imperfect clues to the mazes of this labyrinth. Hence, while imaginative writers have found here free scope for all manner of conjectures and hypotheses, numerous historians have longed for the day when the German government would at last consent to open its archives on a subject of such exceptional interest both to the German people and to the outside world. Since the World War this aspiration has, in large measure at least, been satisfied. The archives of the German Foreign Office are now opened to historians to a degree, and with a liberality, that one would like to see emulated in every other country. In the past year I have had the privilege of using and of transcribing in full the seven volumes of documents which contain the German official record of the diplomatic crisis leading up to the outbreak of the War of 1870. As these documents have never hitherto been printed (with very few exceptions), and have been seen by only a few investigators, it has seemed worth while to publish them, as a contribution to the history of a period so pregnant with fateful consequences. Download or read book The Reality of War written by Léonce Patry and published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson. This book was released on 2001 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long and sombre chronicle of the Franco-Prussian war is an episode that deserves further attention. English-speaking readers have very little sense of what the war was like for its participants. Based on his own experiences, Patry vividly describes the bloodshed and appalling atrocities committed during the army advance to retake the Paris commune. He is also deeply critical of the shortcomings and follies of the high command. An elegant translation of a compelling text, written by a man of obvious charm and honesty, and equally obvious faults, this book is a joy to read. It ranks as one of the best examples of war memoirs written in any language.
