Book excerpt: Since 2002, Dr. Matthew Clark has been giving talks on the history, background and philosophy of yoga; to date (2018) to twenty-five different yoga groups and organizations around the world. The aim of this book is to provide for the non-specialist a very short and concise introduction to the origins and practices of yoga. It is particularly aimed at students on yoga teaching training courses, providing a short, handy introduction to the essential topics of yoga philosophy. Nearly all of the information presented may be found in other publications; some that I have found most useful have been included in the Bibliography. Several friends and colleagues who are very knowledgeable in this field have kindly suggested some minor corrections, which have been incorporated in this edition, which is a revised version of the book that was first published in 2010. Book excerpt: Feuerstein is a renowned yoga scholar and a tireless communicator, sharing his knowledge in more than two dozen books on the subject as well as translations of key yoga scriptures. Most Westerners have a limited understanding of what the term yoga, which means "union," implies. Feuerstein describes yoga as a "spectacularly multifaceted phenomena," and performs a truly yogic feat by combining commentary with translated Sanskrit teachings, history with theory, the spiritual with the practical, and the classical with the contemporary. He illuminates every facet and phase of yoga from its roots in shamanism to its connections to the complex and dynamic spirituality of India, especially yoga's relationship with Hinduism and Buddhism. Feuerstein explicates the different yogic schools and profiles key yoga teachers. Yoga is a vast and vital universe maintained over the centuries by the discipline and persistence of its practitioners, who strive to join the physical with the spiritual, the "individual self with the supreme Self." No more adept or comprehensive study of yoga aimed at a Western audience is to be found.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did an ancient Indian spiritual discipline turn into a $20+ billion-a-year mainstay of the global wellness industry? What happened along yoga's winding path from the caves and forests of the sages to the gyms, hospitals and village halls of the modern West? This comprehensive history sets yoga in its global cultural context for the first time. It leads us on a fascinating journey across the world, from arcane religious rituals and medieval body-magic, through muscular Christianity and the British Raj, to the Indian nationalist movement and the arrival of yoga in the twentieth-century West. We discover how the practice reached its present-day ubiquity and how it became embedded in powerful social currents shaping the world's future, such as feminism, digital media, celebrity culture, the stress pandemic and the quest for an authentic identity in the face of unprecedented change. Shearer's revealing history boasts a colorful cast of characters past and present, who tell an engaging tale of scholars and scandal, science and spirit, wisdom and waywardness. This is the untold story of yoga, warts and all.

Book The Tawny One

Download or read book The Tawny One written by Matthew Clark and published by Aeon Books. This book was released on 2020-03-30 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A modern exploration of ancient wisdom relating to psychoactive plants. The ancient ritual drink used in religious ceremonies and known as soma in India and as haoma in the Zoroastrian tradition is praised in the highest terms - as a kind of deity - in both Zoroastrian and Vedic texts, which date from around 1,700 - 1,500 BCE. It is said to provide health, power, wisdom and even immortality. Many theories have been published about the possible botanical identity of this 'nectar of immortality', a plant which appears to have psychedelic/entheogenic properties. Matthew Clark spent several years researching and travelling widely in his quest of soma and in his fascinating, original and highly readable book, Clark reviews scholarly research, explores mythology and ritual and shares his extensive knowledge of psychoactive plants and fungi. The author suggests that the visionary soma drink was based on analogues of ayahuasca, using a variety of plants, some of which can now be identified.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WHY YOGA? A Cultural History of Yoga takes a critical look at yoga as culture and yoga's role in society. It is about how people - now as then - use the symbolic power of yoga to find a place within society and culture. Yogis in the past.... The book is among many other things a fascinating historical examination of extraordinary customs and unusual social groups. We hear about such past milieus' sometimes bizarre yoga practices and lifestyles, how they are turned into powerful symbols profoundly impressing the rest of society. We hear how yoga specialists use the yoga image to struggle for social recognition among competitors and other social groups. Thus we hear about Jain ascetics, aristocratic warriors, Buddhist monks, Brahmin high castes, Tantric immortals, ecstatic Shamans, snake charmers, Mughal mercenaries, temple cults, fakir contortionists, rural Lumpen-proletarians, enlightened princes, naked philosophers, colonial gurus, wrestling monks, and semi-divine yogis who can fly. ...and yogis today.... But we are also introduced to more conventional and familiar lifestyles of modern times: fitness trainers, intellectual Orientalists, middleclass females, Hindu missionaries, fashion models, bourgeois cultural elites, stressed executives, home going housewives, spiritual entrepreneurs, cultural intermediaries, counterculture youths, petty-bourgeois business people, academic specialists and Hollywood stars. They all are culturally engaged with yoga for different reasons and rewards. ...why do they practice yoga?.... Hence throughout history we hear about yoga virtuosi - living conventionally or extraordinarily - who want to find peace after death, increase energy levels, gain political and worldly power, stretch their backs, find their footing in life, be free of disease, unite with the divine, travel in time, improve their wellbeing, attain ethical guidance, realise the fundamentals of existence, secure high social ranking, commit public suicide, be purified from caste pollution, find their deepest self, live for hundreds of years, become pure consciousness, or improve the look of their bum. So this book is for anyone fascinated by the amazing diversity of human history and culture seen through the lens of yoga. Prepare for surprises. A pioneering method A major objection is also to develop a cultural sociological methodology dedicated to the study of ever-changing ideas and culture, focusing on the evolution and transformation of yogic ideas and practices. To link yoga to the changing social situation of certain groups and segments of society. Thus the following notions, which are explained in specific chapters of the book, are crucial: the dialectic between cultural field and habitus conditioned by conflict and struggle for survival; the dialectic between use-value and symbolic-value; the socio-economic matrix; the understanding of discourses as cultural DNA; discourses as providers of social identity; daily habitual interaction and institutions as the main site for the evolution of new ideas and discourses; the semiotic distinction between the signifier and the signified; conceptual genealogy; high culture as internalised repression (symbolic violence); and oppositional reading. This might sound speculative and abstract but when put into practice it becomes a very down-to-earth and self-evident way to describe and explain cultural change. The book is written in a clear and accessible language. It is structured so it meets the expectations of both educated readers and academics. "This is a really interesting manuscript. It occupies an unusual - even unique - space .... As such rather than view the book as a strictly academic work I see it as a critical perspective on the popular and academic literature as a whole. In that regard I think there is nothing like this out there." Professor Richard King, Professor of Buddhist and Asian Studies, University of Kent.

Book History of Yoga

Download or read book History of Yoga written by Satya Prakash Singh and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description: History of Yoga is an attempt to trace the contours of origin and development of the discipline of yoga in all its possible remifications beginning from the Veda up till modern times. Long before Patanjali stood out as the greatest systematizer of the discipline, yoga had its origin undertaken to understand the mystery of creation of the universe and the individual both in their essence. In contravention of the Aryan Invasion. Theory dominating the process of investigation into the history of ancient India, the volume traces the locus of the yogic sadhana of the earliest Vedic seers in the high Himalayas getting percolated throughout the rst of the country gradually and leaving its remnants also in the Indus seals of the third millennium B>C> Being a product of total involvement of the personality of the Vedic seers in the task of investigation into the mystery of creation, the discipline has evolved into diverse paths such as bhakti, jnana, karma and meditation ranging from pure spiritual to the anatomical as is obvious in its hathayogic manifestation.
