Download or read book The Origin of the Mound Builders written by Alfred Oscar Coffin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin of the Mound Builders: A Thesis To ask or search, I blame thee not; for heaven Is as the book of God before thee set, Wherein to read his wondrous works. Let any traveler start from Wisconsin and traverse the Mississippi Valley to the Gulf of Mexico, and cross the country from the Alleghenies to the Western Plateau, and throughout his course he will find thousands of mounds of earth with a conical or pyramidal apex, and containing within their interior relics of human remains and inventions. When a traveler asks the origin and reasons of these mounds, he is almost invariably met with the enigmatical answer, Indian mounds. They were not made by the Indians whom Columbus found on this continent; in fact, their origin was unknown to the Red Man, since they found them here, and they looked as recent to the first European adventurers, with the remains of ancient forests on their sum mits, as they do to us now. All of the burials, 20 to 30 in number, were accompanied by a very large number of disc shell or Marginella beads, but in no instance were both types of beads found with the same burial. The disc shell beads were found with most of the burials and in numbers sufficient to completely cover the individual from his thighs to his head. The Marginella beads were de posited with only 5 or 6 of the burials in the southern end of the vault, and with each there were from 4 to 6 quarts. These beads are small and average about tothe quart. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Knob: Interpretations of Monks Mound In southern Madison County, Illinois, amid a group of more than one hundred prehistoric earthen mounds in and around the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, stands the largest such earthwork in the New World, known since the early nineteenth century as Cahokia Mound, or, increasingly over the decades, as Monks Mound, after a small band of Trappists who settled briefly in its shadow. Before that, when it was called anything, it was simply the Great Knob. Descriptions of this pile of earth have varied considerably over the two centuries for which we have records. Ifthere is a common thread that runs through them all, it is this: Monks Mound bears explana tion. Although its human origin has long been settled, this was not always so. Even recent descriptions and interpretations have suffered from the influence of preconceived notions of its function in prehistoric times. Surprisingly, despite the importance of the physical appearance of Monks Mound in the attempt to understand its function, no rigorous study has been made of its changing characteristics since European contact, with the possible exception of the work of Warren K. Moorehead in the 19208 and 3os. Moorehead compiled a great deal of data concerning the history of the mound, but stopped short of a careful analysis of its reliability. The question remains: has Monks Mound deteriorated to its present configuration from some pristine geometric perfection, or did it always look more or less as it does to day? Indeed, what precisely is its present shape? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Mound Builders

Download or read book The Mound Builders written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-28 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mound Builders: The Greatest Monument of Prehistoric Man; Cahokia or Monks Mound This truncated, terraced form of mound had its analogy in many of the temples of Mexico and Central America, and indeed in many of the early works of Oriental nations. Such is the monarch, man-made mountain as it was raised above the plain in the midst of this Mound Builders' country. The first view, to the archaeological student, is apt to be dispelling of a preconceived idea, which is usually that of the mound in its architectural prime. Its origi nal clear-cut lines and arithmetical proportions are blunted by the wear of age. Deep furrows have marred its sides and wrinkled its front. Though resisting valiantly, it has bowed to the storms of nature and the vandal assaults of civilized man. Download or read book The Mounds of the Mississippi Valley written by Lucien Carr and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mounds of the Mississippi Valley: Historically Considered TN a papef upon the Prehistoric Remains of Kentucky, published in the first volume iof these Memoirs, I have expressed the opinion that it was impossible to distinguish between a series of stone implements taken from the mounds in the Mississippi Valley, and a similar series made and used by the modern Indians. In fact, so alike are these objects in conception and execution, that any attempt to distinguish them, based' upon form or finish, must be but the merest guesswork. From the rude knife to the carved and polished gorget, they may, one and all, have been taken from the inmost recesses of a mound, or picked up on the surface amid the debris of a recent Indian Village; and the most experienced archaeologist, if called upon to decide as to their origin, would have to acknowledge himself at N or does this similarity step with objects made of stone. Onthe contrary, it is believed to extend to all the articles, of every kind whatso ever, that have thus far been taken from the mounds. Indeed, I might even go farther, and as the result of some years of work, as well in the field as in the library, venture the assertion that not only has there not, as yet, been anything taken from the mounds indicating a higher stage of develop ment than the red Indian of the United States is known to have reached, but that even the mounds themselves, and under this head are included all the earth-works of the Mississippi Valley, were quite within the limits of his efforts.
