Book excerpt: Winner, 2010 PROSE Award for Excellence in the Biological Sciences. Professional and Scholarly Publishing division of the Association of American Publishers In this unique book, Peter S. Ungar tells the story of mammalian teeth from their origin through their evolution to their current diversity. Mammal Teeth traces the evolutionary history of teeth, beginning with the very first mineralized vertebrate structures half a billion years ago. Ungar describes how the simple conical tooth of early vertebrates became the molars, incisors, and other forms we see in mammals today. Evolutionary adaptations changed pointy teeth into flatter ones, with specialized shapes designed to complement the corresponding jaw. Ungar explains tooth structure and function in the context of nutritional needs. The myriad tooth shapes produced by evolution offer different solutions to the fundamental problem of how to squeeze as many nutrients as possible out of foods. The book also highlights Ungar's own path-breaking studies that show how microwear analysis can help us understand ancient diets. The final part of the book provides an in-depth examination of mammalian teeth today, surveying all orders in the class, family by family. Ungar describes some of the more bizarre teeth, such as tusks, and the mammal diversity that accompanies these morphological wonders. Mammal Teeth captures the evolution of mammals, including humans, through the prism of dental change. Synthesizing decades of research, Ungar reveals the interconnections among mammal diet, dentition, and evolution. His book is a must-read for paleontologists, mammalogists, and anthropologists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural History of the Human Teeth: Explaining Their Structure, Use, Formation, Growth, and Diseases; Illustrated With Copper-Plates In 1755, John Hunter assisted his brother in delivering a course of lectures; but through life the task was a painful one to him, and he never attained to fluency and clearness Of expression. In 1760, his health seems to have been impaired by his exertions and in the recollection that one brother had already died under similar circum stances, his friends procured him a situation in the army, as being less intensely laborious than his mode of life. He served as a staff surgeon in Portugal and at the siege of Bellisle. On returning to London he recommenced the teaching of practical anatomy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Mammalian DentitionIn endeavoring to lay before my students truths embodied in the evolution of tooth form, I have been hampered as others undoubtedly have been by the relative inaccessibility of the essential literature. One cannot refer the undergraduate student to all sources of information with which one would like him to become acquainted. They are too scattered and too numerous to permit a student whose time is very limited and who is as yet only upon the threshold of the subject to glean those essential data which he ought to possess. From the profusion of material in the Anatomical Museum of Western Reserve University I have gathered typical examples of the various mammalian dentitions and have briefly presented these.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Teeth Their Natural History

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teeth, Their Natural History: With the Physiology of the Human Mouth No part of the human machine, comes so home to the regard and attention of all, as does the condition of the teeth. Our comfort, our health depend mainly, upon their correct and sound state. The loss or decay of teeth implies loss of health, consequent loss of appetite and good digestion. Indigestion must accompany any deterioration of their function. The performance of this function of diges tion properly can only be effected, and is a secondary process to a sufficient division of the particles of food, by effective trituration, and mastication in the mouth. Thus the food having already become reduced to a pulpy condition by admixture With the saliva during the process of mastication, is received into the stomach fit for digestion. The food in this state of division, is in a condition to be acted upon by the juices secreted in the stomach, becoming forthwith converted into What is called chyme, the first state arrived at in the process of digestion. This process commences the series of functions of assimilation, and nutrition; Without a correct performance of which, severe and painful ail ments supervene. Book Descriptive Anatomy of the Human Teeth Classic Reprint

Download or read book Descriptive Anatomy of the Human Teeth Classic Reprint written by G. V. Black and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Descriptive Anatomy of the Human Teeth By my experience as a practitioner, as a teacher, and in my intercourse with fellow-practitioners, I have become convinced of a serious defect in the teaching of the details of the anatomy of the teeth, and in the systematization of the terms used in their description. This defect has been a constant drawback at the chair, in the laboratory, and most of all, in the college. The object of the present volume is to remedy, in a measure, this defect. To this end I have had constantly in view the needs of the dental student and practitioner. We have heretofore had excellent general descriptions in human and comparative dental anatomy; but these have dealt principally with the general forms of the dentitions of the mammalia and other orders of animate beings, rather than with specific descriptions of the forms of the various surfaces and surface markings, making up the sum of the forms of the individual teeth of man. Valuable as these works have been, they have left the acquirement of a knowledge of the details of the specific forms of the human teeth mostly to individual observation. By this means, many have attained to an excellent perception of the various forms of the human teeth; but it is not reasonable to suppose the profession generally will do this without some fixed guide. What the dental student wants most in the college, and in the office, is a systematized nomenclature of the several parts of the teeth in detail; and such a description as will call his attention successively to every part of each tooth, as Gray, in his Anatomy, has called attention to every part of each bone, however apparently unimportant. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin and Formation of the Dental Follicle: The First Memoir on the Development of the Teeth While the writers of that treatise gave a detailed and elaborate account of the development of the jaws and their anatomical constituents, that por tion devoted to the origin and formation of the dental follicle was in many respects incomplete, and in some particulars erroneous. The improved methods of. Preparing sections for microscopic examination which have since been adopted, together with the experience gained by many years of study, which one of these authors has since devoted to this and kindred subjects, has enabled him, with the aid of his eminent colaborer, not only to correct the errors of that work, but also to describe these parts more minutely, and with greater exactness than had been hitherto pos sible. While the present work traverses a portion of the ground gone over by the previous Writers, it is, nevertheless, a distinct memoir, rendered more comprehensive, and more complete in detail, by the study of the development of the dental system not only in man, but in many other mammifera. Book Evolution of Mammalian Molar Teeth

Download or read book Evolution of Mammalian Molar Teeth written by Henry Fairfield Osborn and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-08 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution of Mammalian Molar Teeth: To and From the Triangular Type, Including Collected and Revised Researches on Trituberculy and New Sections on the Forms and Homologies of the Molar Teeth in the Different Orders of Mammals The older odontography or description of teeth treated each type as a distinct and perfect form in itself. Cuvier's Odontographie des Mammiferes, Giebel's Odontographie, Owen's Odontography are examples of more or less comprehensive treatises in the pre-evolutionary spirit. They antedate the discovery of what may be called the 'new odontography, ' which is based upon the unity of dental type, upon the evolution of the teeth of mammals from a common reptilian prototype, and which treats of each form in relation to its origin, its descent, its gradual complication, and the laws of analogous evolution or independent production of similar forms. The new odontography centres around the 'tritubercular theory' of Cope. This theory had wider acceptance ten years ago than it has to-day; there has been a strong reaction against certain features of it on the part of many of the most able anatomists. This is partly due to misunderstanding, partly to the fact that all the evidence has never been fully marshalled, partly to the discovery of new embryological and palaeontological evidence which may disprove certain features of the theory; but chiefly to the fact that some of the most decisive and convincing palaeontological evidence in support of the theory has not been clearly advanced. It is hoped that this collection of the contributions of the writer, with additional observations, illustrations, and data, and with a discussion of various other theories and criticisms will serve to convince the reader and student that the new odontography in its general principles rests upon an adequate basis of evidence and, while subject to modification in many details, marks a turning point in the science of the teeth. If I have raised questions to which, in some cases, a concise and satisfactory answer cannot be given, I direct attention, awa ken thought, and, in due time, furtherinvestigation, till doubtful questions are settled by more successful research.
