Book A History of the National Tuberculosis Association the Anti Tuberculosis Movement in the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of the National Tuberculosis Association the Anti Tuberculosis Movement in the United States Classic Reprint written by S. Adolphus Knopf and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the National Tuberculosis Association the Anti-Tuberculosis Movement in the United States The completion of fifteen years of the active work of the National Tuberculosis Association in January, 1920, seemed to me an opportune time for recording in some more or less permanent form a history of the beginning of the great anti-tuberculosis movement in the United States and a record of the progress made. This is the reason for this volume. My own personal interest in tuberculosis work, extending over a quarter of a century, and my intimate acquaintance with the National Tuberculosis Association from its inception to its present development, led me to suggest to the Association that such a history should be written. The committee appointed to undertake the matter asked me to write the history and submit it to them for criticism, modification, and approval. The committee was composed of Dr. Hermann M. Biggs, Chairman, Dr. Henry Barton Jacobs, Dr. George M. Kober, Dr. Charles J. Hatfield, and the author. Each member of the committee has read and approved the manuscript and offered helpful suggestions which have been incorporated in the text. Their suggestion that my own biography should be added was very flattering, but I have not complied with it for the following reasons: First, not having been an officer of the Association I was not entitled to appear among those who have held such positions; and secondly, there is nothing of sufficient importance in my own life to be worth recording. I have been a humble soldier in the war against tuberculosis which has been led by great generals. In the early days I had my trials and tribulations like all those who endeavor to do pioneer work. I have been amply rewarded for my work by the good will and friendship of my teachers and colleagues and that of the officers and directors of the Association who have granted me the privilege of writing the history and have been helpful in making its publication possible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Narrative: Of the Work Done in a Year by the Boston Association for the Relief and Control of Tuberculosis The diagram illustrates in rough proportion the resources for caring for the consumptives of Boston. The central circle represents the places, including private physicians' offices where examinations and diagnoses are made, and from which the patients are sent to a suitable "resource" when there is a vacancy. The five small inner circles represent the five principal free clinics. The clinic for examination of applicants from Boston and its vicinity for admission to the Rutland Sanatorium (1) is represented by the upper left-hand inner circle, within which are its initials. The second (2) or next small inner circle to the right is the Out-Patient Department of the Boston Consumptives Hospital, 13 Burroughs Place. The third (3) is the Boston Dispensary on Bennet Street. The fourth (4), the Massachusetts General Hospital, on Grove Street. The fifth (5), the Out-Patient Clinic of the Carney Hospital. The outer central circle represents the office of the Association where a central registration and record of all reported cases is maintained. A nurse is employed to investigate and assist emergency cases. Proper means of disposing of sputum, literature, and information are distributed free. With the exceptions above mentioned all of the "resources" may be referred to directly. It is noticeable that there is no institutional provision whatever for children. Book The Control and Eradication of Tuberculosis

Download or read book The Control and Eradication of Tuberculosis written by Halliday G. Sutherland and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Control and Eradication of Tuberculosis: A Series of International Studies by Many Authors Sir, - In asking you to accept this work on the Control and Eradication of Tuberculosis we do so, not only as a tribute to the pioneer in this field of medicine, but also in the hope that these studies, bearing the impress of your teaching, and contributed by writers of many nations, may advance the movement in this and in other lands. Among the anticipations and foundations of your work the light of Laennee on the pathology of a malady still hopeless was obscured by vague terms. An earlier plea in a "Letter from a Physician in the Highlands" to his friends in London for the healing property of open air lay unheeded, to be revived by George Bodington in a sanatorium, soon closed amid ridicule, as at Belfast in the life and practice of Henry MacCormac, yet to be carried out within living memory among the Mountains of Silesia by Brehmer, and amid the lakes and pines of the Adirondacks by Edward Trudeau. It was the discovery of Koch that defined the basis of all advance. Engaged at the time in research abroad, you realised the vast issue, and returned to Edinburgh to establish and elaborate the method which now bears your name. Of that system this book is an exposition. "Take thou the writing... If any light burn in the imperfect page, ... The Praise is thine."
