Book Education from a Whiteheadian Point of View

Download or read book Education from a Whiteheadian Point of View written by Vesselin Petrov and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-03-28 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic aims of contemporary thinking in education are to cultivate a proper comprehension of the meaning and purpose of education and the role of the teacher, and to develop adequate theoretical and methodological frameworks that combine some of the positive sides of the leading theories, while avoiding their disadvantages. Toward these ends, one excellent candidate for consideration is Alfred North Whitehead’s (1861-1947) process-relational philosophy of education, as set forth in The Aims of Education (1929) and elsewhere. The contributors to this volume analyze Whitehead’s philosophy of education in a detailed and critical fashion, including inquiring into the development of cycle-based approaches to education, like Whitehead’s, in intellectual history as well as its potential objective bases. They also demonstrate how this relates to, and can be integrated with, other leading theories of education and contemporary pedagogical thinking, and identify avenues for its positive, practical application in schooling across the globe as well as in scientific research. The book further critically evaluates current educational practices and the organization of educational institutions in this light and the effectiveness of teaching strategies that are founded upon some of its principles, while also exploring the ramifications of its selection and application in education for society in general, as well as for our common civilizational aspirations, including humanity’s addressing of global problems, such as the ecological crisis. In addition, the volume also serves to lay some of the groundwork for its potential further development.

Download or read book Habits of Mind written by Antonio T. De Nicolás and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This stimulating new work is based on a highly-successful--and extremely popular--course which Professor De Nicolas has taught at the State University of New York at Stony Brook for over 15 years. In "Habits of Mind," De Nicolas reveals that the most important achievement of education is to develop in students those skills that enable them to participate fully in the life of humankind. He calls these skills the "inner technologies", and intends by the phrase something very different from congnitive skills. Education, he claims, must nurture the capacity for fantasy and imagination. In "Habits of Mind," he traces the relative importance of these capacities through the history and philosophy of education from Plato onward. The habits of intellectual discourse are treated as an organic thread from the ancient past to the present.

This book was released on 2010-02-25 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides an introduction to the philosophy of education, which will enable students meeting the subject for the first time to find their way among the many specialized volumes. It deals in a non-technical way with the more important issues raised in a philosophical approach to education, and gives a clear idea of the scope of the subject. After discussing different theories of the aims of education, whether mechanistic or organic, the author addresses practical issues - for example, about the curriculum, the distinction between education and indoctrination, the role of authority and discipline, and the place of religious and moral teaching. Finally he deals with some important aspects of education and the influence of different political structures on the philosophy of education.

Book Ethics for the Very Young

Download or read book Ethics for the Very Young written by Erik Kenyon and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-02-08 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can you be brave if you’re afraid? Why do we “know better” and do things anyway? What makes a family? Philosophers have wrestled with such questions for centuries. They are also the stuff of playground debates. Ethics for the Very Young uses the perplexities of young children’s lives to spark philosophical dialogue. Its lessons scaffold discussion through executive function games (Telephone, Red Light Green Light), dialogic reading of picture books and Reggio Emilia’s art-based inquiry. In the process, children develop skills of dialogue and critical thinking through increased selective attention, self-control, cognitive flexibility and perspective taking. While the elements of this method are familiar, they are here fused into an organic whole grounded in the history of philosophy and defended by current work in developmental psychology. Building on Wartenberg’s Big Ideas for Little Kids, the present curriculum uses a series of 23 picture books to frame discussions of character, bravery, self-control, friendship, the greater good, respect and care. Its goal is not to “teach morals” but to help children articulate and develop their own perspectives through dialogue with each other. Each lesson presents teachers’ reflections on how this exploration of life's enduring questions transformed their school’s culture.

Book A Personal Philosophy of Education

Download or read book A Personal Philosophy of Education written by Debbie Barry and published by . This book was released on 2013-10-04 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My personal philosophy of education is an eclectic blend of several different philosophies. Because of this, I am able to adapt to a variety of teaching situations, and to apply the concepts of various philosophies in my teaching. The purpose of education is to prepare students to be responsible, productive members of society, and to preserve and perpetuate the important thoughts and ideals of the society. As such, education simultaneously serves both the individual student and the society. Teachers and students have specific roles to play in education, and neither group functions effectively without the other group. Teachers facilitate student learning and students participate as consumers in their education. Curriculum should be structured to give every student a firm foundation in basic subjects and to allow students to diversify their educations according to their strengths and interests. Instruction should feature the organic learning associated with mixed-age groups so that learning can be accomplished naturally and so that students retain as much education as possible.
