Forman's the American Republic The test of democracy in any nation or State is the number of men and women of voting age who take part, both directly and indirectly, in the direction of the affairs of government. Applying this test to the State of Oregon it will be found that she is one of the most democratic States in the Union. For, in the first place, all women of legal age may vote and hold office; in the second place, the people may, as described later in the section on the Oregon System, take a direct part in the making of the laws. Book excerpt: Black & white print. American Government 3e aligns with the topics and objectives of many government courses. Faculty involved in the project have endeavored to make government workings, issues, debates, and impacts meaningful and memorable to students while maintaining the conceptual coverage and rigor inherent in the subject. With this objective in mind, the content of this textbook has been developed and arranged to provide a logical progression from the fundamental principles of institutional design at the founding, to avenues of political participation, to thorough coverage of the political structures that constitute American government. The book builds upon what students have already learned and emphasizes connections between topics as well as between theory and applications. The goal of each section is to enable students not just to recognize concepts, but to work with them in ways that will be useful in later courses, future careers, and as engaged citizens. In order to help students understand the ways that government, society, and individuals interconnect, the revision includes more examples and details regarding the lived experiences of diverse groups and communities within the United States. The authors and reviewers sought to strike a balance between confronting the negative and harmful elements of American government, history, and current events, while demonstrating progress in overcoming them. In doing so, the approach seeks to provide instructors with ample opportunities to open discussions, extend and update concepts, and drive deeper engagement.

Book excerpt: Oregon: A State That Stands Out is the first book to look at Oregon from the national standpoint, assessing how the state stacks up by national standards. So far, other writers have only asked what is best in the state-a much less demanding question. Despite its modest population, Oregon not only looks very good by national standards (e.g., often being in the top ten)-sometimes it is even first. And it has been notable from the outset. For instance, the first English-speaking settlement in the West was here. Settlers in Oregon set up the first acting government of Americans in the West (1843). The federal government built its first western offices in Oregon. Clipper ships built in Oregon (1874) set national speed records. And Oregon has an outstanding natural endowment. It has the nation's deepest lake and its deepest canyon. It has the most waterfalls, the most abundant and varied forests, and the longest coastal sand dunes. Twice Oregon has inspired reforms that have swept the nation. In the Progressive era, its political reforms (e.g., the initiative, the referendum, the recall, and others) made such a deep impact on the US that they became known as "the Oregon System." And in the 1960s, the state helped trigger the environmental movement by pioneering many environmental reforms. Today, some businesses have their largest worldwide plants in Oregon. For instance, it hosts one of the world's largest arrays of plants producing computer chips, and the biggest producers of sports shoes. It also hosts the largest collection of craft beer manufacturers, as well as restaurants that draw national acclaim. Some of its cultural institutions are highly ranked: the Ashland Shakespeare Festival, for instance, and Oregon Public Television, which has the most impact of any such institution in the country. These are just a few of the long and fascinating list of similar claims made in this book. It should make all who live here proud to be Oregonians!

Book The Radical Middle Class

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert D. Johnston
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2013-10-31
  • ISBN : 1400849527
  • Pages : 424 pages

Download or read book The Radical Middle Class written by Robert D. Johnston and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America has a long tradition of middle-class radicalism, albeit one that intellectual orthodoxy has tended to obscure. The Radical Middle Class seeks to uncover the democratic, populist, and even anticapitalist legacy of the middle class. By examining in particular the independent small business sector or petite bourgeoisie, using Progressive Era Portland, Oregon, as a case study, Robert Johnston shows that class still matters in America. But it matters only if the politics and culture of the leading player in affairs of class, the middle class, is dramatically reconceived. This book is a powerful combination of intellectual, business, labor, medical, and, above all, political history. Its author also humanizes the middle class by describing the lives of four small business owners: Harry Lane, Will Daly, William U'Ren, and Lora Little. Lane was Portland's reform mayor before becoming one of only six senators to vote against U.S. entry into World War I. Daly was Oregon's most prominent labor leader and a onetime Socialist. U'Ren was the national architect of the direct democracy movement. Little was a leading antivaccinationist. The Radical Middle Class further explores the Portland Ku Klux Klan and concludes with a national overview of the American middle class from the Progressive Era to the present. With its engaging narrative, conceptual richness, and daring argumentation, it will be welcomed by all who understand that reexamining the middle class can yield not only better scholarship but firmer grounds for democratic hope.
