Book excerpt: The island of Crete is in the Mediterranean Sea. It is 5th in size in the Mediterranean after Sicily, Sardinia, Cyprus, and Corsica, and is the largest of the Greek islands. It lies in the part of the Mediterranean Sea designated the Aegean Sea, between Greece and Turkey. The island has an elongated shape, 260 km (160 mi) from east to west, is 60 km (37 mi) at its widest point and narrows to as little as 12 km (7.5 mi) (close to Lerapetra). It is a mountainous island with three mountain ranges, the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) to the west, centrally the Idi Range and to the east Mount Kedros and the Dikti Mountain Range. These mountains give rise to valleys, plateaus and gorges. For lovers of wildflowers the island is well worth visiting. The island has a massive flora (over 2000 species) and a large number of endemic species (over 160 species). There are a large number of species of wild orchid on the island, the island being particularly rich in species. Counts are very variable depending on inclusion or not of subspecies. Some reports give an orchid count of about 100 species, including a number of endemic species. Birds are well represented and there are a number of butterflies to be seen. The palm forest of Vai in eastern Crete is the largest natural palm forest in Europe with Cretan date palm (Phoenix theophrasti). The appearance of orchids in any one botanical site is very variable. One year a particular site may have an enormous number of a species and the flowing year none may appear. Identification of orchids at the species level is not always easy due to hybridisation or close characteristics. A good example of such difficulty is with the Serapias genus of orchids where the genus identity is easy but defining the species may be impossible. There have been many changes in naming of the Orchidaceae, in genus names and species along with a multitude of subspecies. Often the present naming is loosely applied with just genus and subspecies names being used, genus and species being used or genus, species and subspecies being used. Similarly, of course the common names vary from place to place. This situation is particularly so in the case of the genus Ophrys where there have been many name changes.

Book excerpt: A beautiful, richly illustrated book on Europe's wild orchids - perhaps the most enigmatic and popular group in the botanical world. The orchid family (Orchidaceae), numbering some 25,000 species, is one of the world's two largest families of flowering plants. Whilst the vast majority of orchids are found in the wet tropics, Europe accommodates c.130 native orchid species which are equally arranged in dense inflorescences of great beauty. Furthermore, the adaptations encountered in some of the European species are just as fascinating as those of their tropical relatives. This book provides an introduction to the native orchids of Europe. It features four sections: 'Structure and systematics', 'Orchids and the environment', 'Orchid portraits' and 'How to learn more'. This part constitutes the bulk of the book, presenting individual genera in a sequence which reflects their most likely evolutionary relationships. Each genus is introduced by one page of text and illustrated by one or more colour plates on the following pages. The text gives information on how to recognise the genus, where it is distributed, and the estimated number of species it contains - alongside information on the range of environmental requirements and flowering times in the European species. Depending on the genus, additional information may be found on topics such as pollination biology, associated fungi, evolutionary relationships or systematic problems. Beautiful watercolour artwork accompanies the text, making this an indispensable gift for anyone interested in the natural world. Not only is it a useful field guide, it is also a beautiful art book.

The finest coastal and mountain walks on Greece’s largest and most diverse island can be found in the Rother Walking Guide »Crete«. The choice ranges from a pleasant walk across foothills through vineyards and sprawling groves of olive trees all the way up to the highest panoramic summits. There are even some demanding peaks, over 2000 metres in height, to climb. Breathtaking canyons can be traversed and isolated, dripstone caves are waiting to be explored. Everywhere you look, you’ll find little villages, secluded monasteries and remote caves. Coastal trails lead to tranquil coves for bathing; is there anything better than, after a walk, taking a dip in some refreshing waters? Even the classic Cretan walks, like the Samaria Gorge and Dead’s Gorge with its Minoan palace grounds, are included in this guide. Rolf Goetz, a seasoned writer of walking guides for the Bergverlag Rother, presents 70 walks on the island of Crete, all rich in diversity. Each individual walk includes a short preface with all the important key points, an exact description of the route, a pertinent height profile and a little walking map with the route marked in.
