Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Orchid World, 1914, Vol. 4: A Monthly Illustrated Journal Entirely Devoted to Orchidology There now exists a general desire to dispense with almost all under-stages in houses devoted to cool - growing Orchids, the only ones considered necessary being those placed directly over the hot-water pipes in order to counteract the dry and hot atmosphere which would otherwise be created in the house. In many of the large houses there is a centre staging, under which hot water pipes are seldom placed, and even when they are, there is a great amount of space between them and the plants; it is on these stages that the healthiest Odontoglossums are generally seen. A free circulation of_ air round the plants is usually to be noticed when no under-staging is used, and it is this light, buoyant atmosphere which is so essential to the welfare of cool growing Orchids. Book Beware the Evil Eye 4 Volume Set

Download or read book Beware the Evil Eye 4 Volume Set written by John H. Elliott and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-09-20 with total page 1222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus of Nazareth makes reference to one of the oldest beliefs in the ancient world—the malignity of an Evil Eye. The Holy Scriptures in their original languages contain no less than twenty-four references to the Evil Eye, although this is obscured by most modern Bible translations. John H. Elliott’s Beware the Evil Eye describes this belief and associated practices, its history, its voluminous appearances in ancient cultures, and the extensive research devoted to it over the centuries in order to unravel this enigma for readers who have never heard of the Evil Eye and its presence in the Bible. The four volumes cover the ancient world from Sumer to the Middle Ages.

Download or read book Orchid Species from Himalaya and Southeast Asia Vol 2 G P written by Eng Soon Teoh and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A presentation of over 700 popular orchid species in 104 genera carefully detailed with beautiful photographs and concise descriptions of plants, their distribution and habitats by a well-known author and photographer. Each genus is assigned a separate chapter. Coverage of the most commonly cultivated Asian species including their varieties and cultivars (e.g. in Bulbophyllum 72 species; Coelogyne 33 species; Dendrobium 161 species; Paphiopedilum 58 species; Phalaenopsis 60 species; Vanda 44 species) is exhaustive. The orchids are photographed from their best perspective, individual blooms and entire inflorescence: additionally, many species are also shown growing in their natural habitat. Representative hybrids are included to illustrate how some species have contributed to show-worthiness of various genera, their adaptation to a wider climate range, and easy cultivation. This book is a pleasure to view; simultaneously, an easy reference for the identification of orchid species and it provides a guide on how best to grow them. Nowhere else will one find so many popular species beautifully illustrated in a single volume. A must for everyone fascinated by orchids or with a love for nature.

Book The New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature Volume 4 1900 1950

Download or read book The New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature Volume 4 1900 1950 written by George Watson and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1972-12-07 with total page 746 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than fifty specialists have contributed to this new edition of volume 4 of The Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature. The design of the original work has established itself so firmly as a workable solution to the immense problems of analysis, articulation and coordination that it has been retained in all its essentials for the new edition. The task of the new contributors has been to revise and integrate the lists of 1940 and 1957, to add materials of the following decade, to correct and refine the bibliographical details already available, and to re-shape the whole according to a new series of conventions devised to give greater clarity and consistency to the entries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Orchid World, 1916, Vol. 6: A Monthly Illustrated Journal Entirely Devoted to Orchidology HE nomenclature of Orchids is a subject in which I have for many years taken a great interest. So long as our records were limited to species and varieties of species no great difficulty arose. Wrong names may have been given in the hurry of the moment, but these were in a short time discovered and put right. Very soon, however, growers found out that it was possible by the fertilisation of one species with another to raise hybrids embracing both the good and bad qualities of their parents. Of these qualities, to use a Mendelian phrase, the latter was found to be dominant and the former recessive; but, nevertheless, by reason of the amateur purchasing fine varieties the former survived and the latter were dispensed with. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of every seven flowering plants on earth is an orchid. Some are stunningly over the top; others almost inconspicuous. The Orchidaceae is the second most widely geographically distributed family, after the grasses, yet remains one of the least understood. This book will profile 600 species, representing the remarkable and unexpected diversity and complexity in the taxonomy and phylogeny of these beguiling plants, and the extraordinary means they have evolved in order to ensure the attraction of pollinators. Each species entry includes life-size photographs to capture botanical detail, as well as information on distribution, peak flowering period, and unique attributes--both natural and cultural. The result is a work which will attract and allure, much as the orchids themselves do.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Orchid World, 1911, Vol. 1: A Monthly Illustrated Journal Entirely Devoted to Orchidology HE cultivation of flowers is of all the T amusements of mankind the one to be selected and approved as the most innocent in itself, and most perfectly devoid of injury or annoyance to others: the employ ment is not only conducive to health and peace of mind, but, probably, more good-will has arisen, and friendships been founded, by the intercourse and communication connected with this pursuit, than from any other whatsoever. Download or read book The Orchid World 1913 Vol 3 written by Gurney Wilson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-28 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Orchid World, 1913, Vol. 3: A Monthly Illustrated Journal Entirely Devoted to Orchidology Considering the exceptionally dull sunless season we have passed through, the safest course will be to keep a little extra fire heat in the pipes at night time, thereby preventing the temperatures from falling too low by the morning. The young growths of many autumn growing Orchids are frequently injured through insufficient heat. Another advantage to be derived from this extra fire heat is that more pure air can be admitted. It is difficult to forecast fluctuations of temperature, but many difficulties may be overcome by careful observation of the outside elements. During this and next month the tempera tures of the various houses should be kept as near to the under-mentioned figures as circumstances will permit.
