In many of the large houses there is a centre staging, under which hot water pipes are seldom placed, and even when they are, there is a great amount of space between them and the plants; it is on these stages that the healthiest Odontoglossums are generally seen. A free circulation of_ air round the plants is usually to be noticed when no under-staging is used, and it is this light, buoyant atmosphere which is so essential to the welfare of cool growing Orchids. So long as our records were limited to species and varieties of species no great difficulty arose. Wrong names may have been given in the hurry of the moment, but these were in a short time discovered and put right. Very soon, however, growers found out that it was possible by the fertilisation of one species with another to raise hybrids embracing both the good and bad qualities of their parents. Of these qualities, to use a Mendelian phrase, the latter was found to be dominant and the former recessive; but, nevertheless, by reason of the amateur purchasing fine varieties the former survived and the latter were dispensed with. The young growths of many autumn growing Orchids are frequently injured through insufficient heat. Another advantage to be derived from this extra fire heat is that more pure air can be admitted. It is difficult to forecast fluctuations of temperature, but many difficulties may be overcome by careful observation of the outside elements.
