Book The Opium Traffic in Its International Aspects Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Opium Traffic in Its International Aspects Classic Reprint written by Wie T. Dunn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Opium Traffic in Its International Aspects Early Chinese chronicles made no mention of the poppy and opium. Nor did the economic history of China previous to the Chin Dynasty make any reference to Opium or the poppy or its properties. The fact that the Chinese name for Opium is a mere translation of the sound of the English word shows conclusively that opium was entirely foreign to China until it was introduced. In the memorandum submitted to the International Opium Commission at Shanghai (1909) a statement is found to the effect that the poppy was known in China for twelve centuries and its medicinal use for nine centuries.3 But authentic Chinese history does not support this. Statement. The poppy was known in ancient times. Homer and other Greek writers made frequent mention of the peculiar intoxicating properties of the poppy. Roman writers such as Virgil, Livy, Pliny, and Ovid, described it as being used for various purposes.4 Dr. D. I. Macht stated that the poppy was first found in Asia Minor and then trans planted in Greece, and that the Arabs introduced opium to the natives of Persia and India.5 But Dr. Nathan Allen holds a contrary Opinion, saying that the poppy has its origin in Persia.6 From these two authoritative statements, it is clear that the poppy was imported into China from foreign. Book excerpt: A spectacular generational saga of the making (and undoing) of a family dynasty: the riveting untold story of the gilded Jewish Bagdadi Sassoons, who built a vast empire through global finance and trade—cotton, opium, shipping, banking—that reached across three continents and ultimately changed the destinies of nations. With full access to rare family photographs and archives. “Engaging...compelling...well-paced and supremely satisfying. ”—The New York Times They were one of the richest families in the world for two hundred years, from the 19th century to the 20th, and were known as ‘the Rothschilds of the East.’ Mesopotamian in origin, and for more than forty years the chief treasurers to the pashas of Baghdad and Basra, they were forced to flee to Bushir on the Persian Gulf; David Sassoon and sons starting over with nothing, and beginning to trade in India in cotton and opium. The Sassoons soon were building textile mills and factories, and setting up branches in shipping in China, and expanding beyond, to Japan, and further west, to Paris and London. They became members of British parliament; were knighted; and owned and edited Britain’s leading newspapers, including The Sunday Times and The Observer. And in 1887, the exalted dynasty of Sassoon joined forces with the banking empire of Rothschild and were soon joined by marriage, fusing together two of the biggest Jewish commerce and banking families in the world. Against the monumental canvas of two centuries of the Ottoman Empire and the changing face of the Far East, across Europe and Great Britain during the time of its farthest reach, Joseph Sassoon gives us a riveting generational saga of the making of this magnificent family dynasty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This trailblazing study examines the history of narcotics in Japan to explain the development of global criteria for political legitimacy in nations and empires in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Japan underwent three distinct crises of sovereignty in its modern history: in the 1890s, during the interwar period, and in the 1950s. Each crisis provoked successively escalating crusades against opium and other drugs, in which moral entrepreneurs--bureaucrats, cultural producers, merchants, law enforcement, scientists, and doctors, among others--focused on drug use as a means of distinguishing between populations fit and unfit for self-rule. Moral Nation traces the instrumental role of ideologies about narcotics in the country's efforts to reestablish its legitimacy as a nation and empire. As Kingsberg demonstrates, Japan's growing status as an Asian power and a "moral nation" expanded the notion of "civilization" from an exclusively Western value to a universal one. Scholars and students of Japanese history, Asian studies, world history, and global studies will gain an in-depth understanding of how Japan's experience with narcotics influenced global standards for sovereignty and shifted the aim of nation building, making it no longer a strictly political activity but also a moral obligation to society.
