Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Ticket to the Opera, Phil G. Goulding finally makes the magic and mystique of opera accessible to all. Here he offers a complete operatic education, including history, definitions of key musical terms, opera lore and gossip, portraits of famous singers and the roles they immortalized, as well as pithy introductions to the greatest operas of Europe and America and their composers. The book's centerpiece is what Goulding terms "the collection"--85 classics, among them Aida, The Marriage of Figaro, Carmen, and Madama Butterfly, that have been packing the world's opera houses for years. This entertaining, meticulously researched book also includes a fascinating chapter on American opera from George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess to Philip Glass's Einstein on the Beach and a discussion of the gems of twentieth-century opera featuring works like Leos Janácek's The Cunning Little Vixen, Alban Berg's Lulu, and Serge Prokofiev's The Love for Three Oranges. Whether you're a curious neophyte, a music lover interested in branching out, or an aficionado eager to compare notes with a brilliant fellow opera buff, you'll prize Ticket to the Opera as an essential volume in your music library.

Book Storytelling in Opera and Musical Theater

Download or read book Storytelling in Opera and Musical Theater written by Nina Penner and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Storytelling in Opera and Musical Theater is the first systematic exploration of how sung forms of drama tell stories. Through examples from opera's origins to contemporary musicals, Nina Penner examines the roles of character-narrators and how they differ from those in literary and cinematic works, how music can orient spectators to characters' points of view, how being privy to characters' inner thoughts and feelings may evoke feelings of sympathy or empathy, and how performers' choices affect not only who is telling the story but what story is being told. Unique about Penner's approach is her engagement with current work in analytic philosophy. Her study reveals not only the resources this philosophical tradition can bring to musicology but those which musicology can bring to philosophy, challenging and refining accounts of narrative, point of view, and the work-performance relationship within both disciplines. She also considers practical problems singers and directors confront on a daily basis, such as what to do about Wagner's Jewish caricatures and the racism of Orientalist operas. More generally, Penner reflects on how centuries-old works remain meaningful to contemporary audiences and have the power to attract new, more diverse audiences to opera and musical theater. By exploring how practitioners past and present have addressed these issues, Storytelling in Opera and Musical Theater offers suggestions for how opera and musical theater can continue to entertain and enrich the lives of 21st-century audiences.

Book The Opera Past and the Opera Past and Present an Historical Sketch Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Opera Past and the Opera Past and Present an Historical Sketch Classic Reprint written by William Fostei Apthorp and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Opera, Past and the Opera Past and Present, an Historical Sketch Only in two instances have I departed from this general plan: in the cases of Mozart and Beethoven. The puissant genius of these men was too closely in harmony with the funda mental idea of the Opera for them to be negli gible, although they exerted infinitely little in fluence upon either their contemporaries or their successors in this field of composition. Of two other men, again, -alessandro Scarlatti and Handel, - I have said extremely, perhaps surprisingly, little. Though the greatness of their genius is beyond doubt, the part they played in the history of Opera was at once un important and, as far as it went, antagonistic to the real evolution of the form. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Opera, Past and the Opera Past and Present, an Historical Sketch For a History of Opera - covering, as it does, over three centuries in four countries -to be brought within the compass of a volume like this, it must be either one of two things: something little better than a time-table, an annotated list of names and dates, or else a compendious sketch. The former plan might be excusably followed in a school text - book; though some grave doubts of its advisability might be entertained, even there. But, in a book that hopes to be read otherwise than under compulsion, it would be a self-stultifying impertinence. The other plan, of making the History a compendious sketch, is the only one to the purpose. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Opera and the Golden West

  • Author : John Louis DiGaetani

Download or read book Opera and the Golden West written by John Louis DiGaetani and published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Opera and the Golden West is a celebration of opera's difficult past in America. It focuses in part on early repertory and how European operatic masterpieces became part of American culture. This book also calls attention to the efforts of American composers as they continually tried to make original contributions to a foreign musical form. Throughout this anthology the contributors use a variety of approaches and styles to analyze the many aspects of opera, and how the form fared in the U.S. In addition to observing where opera has been in this country, this anthology also has an eye to the future. Opera presentation in the coming century may be very different from the current experience. Economics, always a critical factor, may well dictate a different scale of production. Changing tastes in directorial and production values and the expansion of television and video into the home are indicators that a new era has arrived.

Book A Short History of Opera

  • Author : Donald J. Grout
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press

Download or read book A Short History of Opera written by Donald J. Grout and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2003-07-18 with total page 1047 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When first published in 1947, A Short History of Opera immediately achieved international status as a classic in the field. Now, more than five decades later, this thoroughly revised and expanded fourth edition informs and entertains opera lovers just as its predecessors have. The fourth edition incorporates new scholarship that traces the most important developments in the evolution of musical drama. After surveying anticipations of the operatic form in the lyric theater of the Greeks, medieval dramatic music, and other forerunners, the book reveals the genre's beginnings in the seventeenth century and follows its progress to the present day. A Short History of Opera examines not only the standard performance repertoire, but also works considered important for the genre's development. Its expanded scope investigates opera from Eastern European countries and Finland. The section on twentieth-century opera has been reorganized around national operatic traditions including a chapter devoted solely to opera in the United States, which incorporates material on the American musical and ties between classical opera and popular musical theater. A separate section on Chinese opera is also included. With an extensive multilanguage bibliography, more than one hundred musical examples, and stage illustrations, this authoritative one-volume survey will be invaluable to students and serious opera buffs. New fans will also find it highly accessible and informative. Extremely thorough in its coverage, A Short History of Opera is now more than ever the book to turn to for anyone who wants to know about the history of this art form.
