Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE PATH OF ENLIGHTENMENT A true bodhisattva knows that awakening is not dependent on our innate nature, nor is it dependent on the experience of life. When we know that no matter what we do, and no matter how long we seek, there is a way to gain Enlightenment, we experience great peace, as if we have gained the wealth of the universe. It is this awakening which gave the Buddha the ability to see beyond his own ego and understand the true nature of the cosmos. Now Mahamudra happens within humanities heartThis is what the Amida Buddha understood as well. He understood that although he was no more than an ordinary being, he possessed the power to liberate all beings from suffering. He knew that he had not attained Enlightenment, but he also knew that he was neither of the two principal ranks of bodhisattva. Although he had attained no such rank, he was not less enlightened than the Three Jewels; rather, he was far more enlightened than any human being. The bliss he had experienced was not the "floating around" senseof-transcendence, the "waking up" through awakening, but rather a direct experience of being-awake which is at the same time aware of its incompleteness. It is dependent on a pure vision, a non-dual vision. Because there is a true vision, there is a way of opening up to reality. The bodhisattva doesn't blindly follow the Buddha, but has an independent means of attainment. It is the definitive realization of a state of nonduality, one that sees through the illusion of duality, that sees reality as unity. As the Buddha said, "Even though I am just a human being, the teachings of buddha's (Amida's) teaching are with me." As the Buddha said, "Even though I am just a human being, the Dharma of the Buddhas is with me." This self-knowledge leads to the emancipation of all beings from suffering. The Buddha's teaching is the only true path to enlightenment, and only he knows how to practice it. He is completely at one with his pure vision. He knows that enlightenment is beyond the reach of human mind. He knows that he has not gained the topmost rank, but, as Mahayanists say, he is a saint who has experienced enlightenment. His mind is now pure and undistracted, his clarity is limitless, his sense of compassion universal, his perfect stillness complete. We do not know how to practice, but if we are ever to attain enlightenment, we must know how to practice. In the words of His Holiness the Sixteenth Karmapa, "This is the supreme teaching of all masters in the ancient world.

Book True Enlightenment

  • Release : 2020-11-23
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 156 pages

Download or read book True Enlightenment written by Endall Beall and published by . This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For thousands of years, even before recorded history, shamans and others have sought understanding of the so-called spiritual world. Once writing was invented, then the narratives started about what people thought Enlightenment was and what it represented. In all cases it has been perceived to be something spiritual. What True Enlightenment presents is an alternative explanation to all these spiritual quests by informing the reader that the road to Enlightenment is not about spirituality and mysticism, but instead relates to a psychological process to prepare one for a direct interface with higher consciousness. Over the ages, spirit and consciousness have been mistakenly conflated to mean the same thing, yet they are not the same thing. Although the author of this book has presented a large number of books over the past 5 years, this short book serves as a foundational primer to show how those seeking Enlightenment have misunderstood the process and have been going about it the wrong way. If you are one of those who has only recently stepped onto this path, or if you are a seasoned veteran in the quest for Enlightenment who has chased the spiritual rainbow without any success for your efforts, this book should benefit your understanding and help direct you down more productive channels of understanding.

Book How to Attain Enlightenment

Download or read book How to Attain Enlightenment written by James Swartz and published by Sentient+ORM. This book was released on 2010-02-16 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Goes through the entire gamut of topics covered by the Vedas, making use of yoga, detachment, the ego, karma, dharma, love, meditation and much more.” —East and West Magazine This complete guide to enlightenment presents the wisdom of the ancient science of self-inquiry, a time-tested means for achieving spiritual freedom. The author discusses the purpose of self-inquiry, the quest for lasting happiness, issues of identity and transcendence, the role of wisdom and action, and the subconscious obstacles to freedom. He convincingly refutes the popular view that enlightenment is a unique state of consciousness and debunks a host of other enlightenment myths. In his straightforward style he reveals proven methods for purifying the mind, and includes chapters on love, the science of energy transformation and meditation. He takes the reader from the beginning to the end of the spiritual path, patiently unfolding the logic of self-inquiry. “Vedanta is the original systemized enlightenment teaching, and James does an extraordinary job of extracting the essential nectar of the teachings from its dusty, ancient, Sanskrit origins and elucidating it with utmost clarity. One review cannot do this teaching, with its rich history and depth, even a modicum of justice. James’s book is the best introduction there is to this subject.” —Consciousness Junkie “Explains methods of Vedanta in his survey of spiritual techniques, pairing theory with practice and explaining the myths and realities behind an enlightened state. From reflections on moving to a larger living space and clutter to assimilating experiences, How to Attain Enlightenment is a powerful survey any new age library needs.” —The Bookwatch

Book Letters of Transmission

Download or read book Letters of Transmission written by Bart Marshall and published by . This book was released on 2023-11-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You hold in your hand a unique treasure. There are thousands of spiritual teachers, but true Zen masters-those who can transmit, who can midwife a student to awakening-are rare. Some may write books or essays, but their real work is done individually with students in person. Alfred Pulyan (1896-1966) was one of those rare Zen masters who can transmit, but his method of transmission came not through personal contact, but rather through an exchange of letters with his students. He worked primarily by mail and had notable success triggering enlightenment in serious students through the power and rapport of his letters. A fortunate side-effect of his method is that it is written down, and thus potentially available to others-providing one can find any of his letters. Those collected here are from a correspondence with Richard Rose in 1960 and 1961 and provide an invaluable look under the covers as a Zen master goes about his thankless work. Rose was already awake when he heard about Pulyan's ability, having had a definitive spiritual experience in 1947 at age thirty. He contacted Pulyan for the purpose of learning how to transmit what he'd become, pretending to be a seeker while continually pressing Pulyan to reveal method. At times in these letters Pulyan seems to be onto him, but with unbelievable patience and incredible mastery he works to crack Rose's nut and at the same time tells him what he's doing and how and why he's doing it. Pulyan wrote his letters in longhand, with extensive margin notes. For this book, I have edited them to include those notes in the main text, and made other minor edits to help the letters read more smoothly. Rose's letters are not included in this book, except for his initial inquiry that kicks things off. Not much is known about Pulyan's life, and in fact he's somewhat of an enigma. Much of what is known he tells us himself in these letters. Conflicting reports have him being born either in New York or London, but at any rate he turned up in New York City sometime after World War I and lived most of his life there. He is of an age where he might have served in the war, but no record of it exists. From these letters we know he studied mathematics and worked as an accountant, office manager, and executive. In the late 1950's he and his wife Madeline bought 12 acres in rural Connecticut where they and some friends settled in. One of these friends was the young woman who was Pulyan's teacher and who was responsible for his realization. (He'll tell you the story in one of these letters.) Pulyan's only known published writings are articles in The Aberree, a journal in circulation from 1954 through 1965. The best known of these, "The Penny That Blots Out the Sun," is included at the end of this book.

Book A Blueprint of Enlightenment

Download or read book A Blueprint of Enlightenment written by Inoue Gien and published by . This book was released on 2020-05-27 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enlightenment is the most important work in each one's life. Enlightenment is the only way to verify awakening to the true nature of the self without the least bit of deviation. Gien Roshi explains the Blueprint of Enlightenment that Dogen Zenji gave us in his writing of the Guidelines for Studying the Way. Gien Roshi writes: The Bodhi-mind is the mind that wants to attain unsurpassed, complete, and perfect enlightenment. This term looks difficult, but the Bodhi-mind means the mind that seeks the Way. This Way is how you are right now. First, you need to ask, "What is my essential nature? What is the true nature of my mind?" To want to find out these things is very important. In other words, "What is the self?" You need to have the desire to be a person who can answer those questions and who can say, "This is what a human being is." Gien Roshi had that burning desire and now is able to elucidate Dogen's teachings. When Gien Roshi at last experienced complete, perfect enlightenment, he said, "In the midst of several thousand people, there was no one, no place, no me ... absolutely nothing. While there was nothing and no one who knows that, some condition touched this [body] and consciousness arose. Until then, the conscious experience was absent and then it suddenly rose up. And so, at that moment, "Oh!" From that time on, there was not the slightest doubt." Certainly, now is the time for Dogen Zenji's teaching, to get a new lease on life through Gien Roshi's commentary, the means to find the Way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From one of America’s most brilliant writers, a New York Times bestselling journey through psychology, philosophy, and lots of meditation to show how Buddhism holds the key to moral clarity and enduring happiness. At the heart of Buddhism is a simple claim: The reason we suffer—and the reason we make other people suffer—is that we don’t see the world clearly. At the heart of Buddhist meditative practice is a radical promise: We can learn to see the world, including ourselves, more clearly and so gain a deep and morally valid happiness. In this “sublime” (The New Yorker), pathbreaking book, Robert Wright shows how taking this promise seriously can change your life—how it can loosen the grip of anxiety, regret, and hatred, and how it can deepen your appreciation of beauty and of other people. He also shows why this transformation works, drawing on the latest in neuroscience and psychology, and armed with an acute understanding of human evolution. This book is the culmination of a personal journey that began with Wright’s landmark book on evolutionary psychology, The Moral Animal, and deepened as he immersed himself in meditative practice and conversed with some of the world’s most skilled meditators. The result is a story that is “provocative, informative and...deeply rewarding” (The New York Times Book Review), and as entertaining as it is illuminating. Written with the wit, clarity, and grace for which Wright is famous, Why Buddhism Is True lays the foundation for a spiritual life in a secular age and shows how, in a time of technological distraction and social division, we can save ourselves from ourselves, both as individuals and as a species.
