Book excerpt: One Less Victim: A Personal Guide to Victim Prevention is about crime victims and their predators. Unlike most self-defense books, One Less Victim explains the more subtle facors that draw criminals to crime victims, ranging from school bullyiing to large scale swindling. This book gives solutions for potential victims to get themselves out of the victim mindset and into one of self-confidence and safety. Who is most vulnerable to theft, assault or robbery? Is it seniors, college women, minorities or young adult males? Does a medical worker have a higher risk for violent attack than a sales manager? What indicates that a school has a high risk for bullying, theft and drugs? Setter describes how some people unknowingly find themselves drawn towards people, places and situations that result in them being robbed, conned, assaulted, brutalized or even murdered. Like any bad habit, victimization often just gets worse. One Less Victim explains: Early crime victim conditioning

Book The Honest Politician s Guide to Crime Control

Download or read book The Honest Politician s Guide to Crime Control written by Norval Morris and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1970 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Norval Morris and Gordon Hawkins's first premise is that our criminal justice system is a moral busybody, unwisely extended beyond its proper role of protecting persons and property. But they go further and systematically cover the amount, costs, causes, and victims of crime: the reduction of violence; the police; corrections; juvenile delinquency; the function of psychiatry in crime control; organized crime; and the uses of criminological research. On each topic precise recommendations are made and carefully defended.

Book Problem oriented Policing and Crime Prevention

Download or read book Problem oriented Policing and Crime Prevention written by Anthony Allan Braga and published by Willow Tree Press. This book was released on 2002-01 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Braga argues that problem-oriented policing has been evaluated as effective in controlling a wide range of crime and disorder problems, ranging from burglaries and robberies, to prostitution and various types of violence. He analyzes why problem-oriented policing interventions are effective and, thereby, intends to broaden the use of this approach in everyday policing.Problem-oriented policing directs attention and resources to the underlying problems that lurk behind many recurring crime problems. Braga summarizes the extensive worldwide research literature on three types of interventions:reducing opportunities for crime at problem-plagued places (e.g., bars, housing projects) through enforcement-oriented and/or environmental measures;targeting high-activity (repeat) offenders; andprotecting the victims of repetitive offenses. Braga concludes with ideas for correcting deficiencies in current approaches to problem-oriented policing. These suggestions address how to improve crime analysis, enhance the measurement of police performance, and secure productive police-community partnerships.

  • Publisher : The Stationery Office
  • Release : 2013-02-15
  • ISBN : 9780215054111
  • Pages : 190 pages

Download or read book Dog Control and Welfare written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2013-02-15 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DEFRA's belated proposals to tackle irresponsible dog ownership are too limited. Since 2007 dogs have killed seven people, including five children, in private homes. The NHS also spends over £3 million annually treating dog attack injuries. Some eight assistance dogs a month, and thousands of livestock annually, are attacked by dogs. The Home Office approach to tackling antisocial behaviour is too simplistic; and fails to reflect the impact that poor breeding and training by irresponsible owners can have on a dog's behaviour. New rules should give enforcement officers more effective powers, including Dog Control Notices, to prevent dog-related antisocial behaviour. Local authorities need to devote more resources to the effective management of stray dogs. MPs call for changes in the legislation to give powers to extend the banned list to include other dogs with particularly aggressive characteristics. At the same time, those tasked to enforce legislation should have the discretion to neuter rather than destroy a banned animal where a particular dog poses no threat. The Advisory Council on Welfare Issues of Dog Breeding should be given a formal regulatory role to enforce standards. Any breeder producing more than two litters per year should be licensed and subject to welfare checks. The Kennel Club should stop registering puppies from breeders not compliant with its own Assured Breeder Scheme. It should also commission an independent annual review of Breed Standards led by vets to eliminate health problems linked to breeding for exaggerated characteristics. Lastly, MPs call on websites advertising pets to develop a voluntary Code of Practice

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Ryder, and Roger Fouts--to challenge and change exploitative practices. As concern for animals and their welfare grows, this volume will be an indispensable aid to general readers, activists, scholars, and students interested in developing a keener awareness of cruelty to animals and considering avenues for reform. Also included is a special foreword by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, urging readers to seek justice and protection for all creatures, humans and animals alike.

  • Publisher : Ballantine Books

Download or read book The Other End of the Leash written by Patricia McConnell, Ph.D. and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2009-02-19 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn to communicate with your dog—using their language “Good reading for dog lovers and an immensely useful manual for dog owners.”—The Washington Post An Applied Animal Behaviorist and dog trainer with more than twenty years’ experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell reveals a revolutionary new perspective on our relationship with dogs—sharing insights on how “man’s best friend” might interpret our behavior, as well as essential advice on how to interact with our four-legged friends in ways that bring out the best in them. After all, humans and dogs are two entirely different species, each shaped by its individual evolutionary heritage. Quite simply, humans are primates and dogs are canids (as are wolves, coyotes, and foxes). Since we each speak a different native tongue, a lot gets lost in the translation. This marvelous guide demonstrates how even the slightest changes in our voices and in the ways we stand can help dogs understand what we want. Inside you will discover: • How you can get your dog to come when called by acting less like a primate and more like a dog • Why the advice to “get dominance” over your dog can cause problems • Why “rough and tumble primate play” can lead to trouble—and how to play with your dog in ways that are fun and keep him out of mischief • How dogs and humans share personality types—and why most dogs want to live with benevolent leaders rather than “alpha wanna-bes!” Fascinating, insightful, and compelling, The Other End of the Leash is a book that strives to help you connect with your dog in a completely new way—so as to enrich that most rewarding of relationships.
