Book excerpt: Excerpt from The One Hundred and Five Martyrs of Tyburn The Oratory of the English Martyrs has become a Shrine that is very dear to many devout pilgrims. Though it is only a temporary one, housed in a room which is far from being worthy of its hallowed memories, it has yet a character and dignity of its own which appeals to the heart and stimulates the imagination. It is now some years since a few devoted friends of Tyburn took it upon them to decorate and enrich this little Shrine, so that it might tell more vividly the story of those great souls who consecrated this soil with their blood. It was a Benedictine monk who first conceived the idea of overshadowing the altar of sacrifice with a presentiment of the Triple Tree of Tyburn, the Holy Rood of this our English Calvary. It was another Benedictine who carried out his ideas, designed the Tree with its pendant lamps, the altar reredos and ornaments which make so strong an appeal to the lovers of our Martyrs. Book Sacred and Secular Martyrdom in Britain and Ireland since 1914

Download or read book Sacred and Secular Martyrdom in Britain and Ireland since 1914 written by John Wolffe and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-11-28 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During and immediately after the First World War, there was a merging of Christian and nationalist traditions of martyrdom, expressed in the design of war cemeteries and war memorials, and the state funeral of the Unknown Warrior in 1920. John Wolffe explores the subsequent development of these traditions of 'sacred' and 'secular' martyrdom, analysing the ways in which they operated - sometimes in parallel, sometimes merged together and sometimes in conflict with each other. Particular topics explored include the Protestant commemoration of Marian and missionary martyrs, and the Roman Catholic campaign for the canonization of the 'saints and martyrs of England'. Secular martyrdom is discussed in relation to military conflicts especially the Second World War and the Falklands. In Ireland there was a particularly persistent merging of sacred and secular martyrdom in the wake of the Easter Rising of 1916 although by the time of the Northern Ireland 'Troubles' in the later twentieth-century these traditions diverged. In covering these themes, the book also offers historical and comparative context for understanding present-day acts of martyrdom in the form of suicide attacks.

Book The Hidden Lives of Tudor Women

Download or read book The Hidden Lives of Tudor Women written by Elizabeth Norton and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-07-04 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The turbulent Tudor Age never fails to capture the imagination. But what was it truly like to be a woman during this era? The Tudor period conjures up images of queens and noblewomen in elaborate court dress; of palace intrigue and dramatic politics. But if you were a woman, it was also a time when death during childbirth was rife; when marriage was usually a legal contract, not a matter for love, and the education you could hope to receive was minimal at best. Yet the Tudor century was also dominated by powerful and dynamic women in a way that no era had been before. Historian Elizabeth Norton explores the life cycle of the Tudor woman, from childhood to old age, through the diverging examples of women such as Elizabeth Tudor, Henry VIII’s sister; Cecily Burbage, Elizabeth's wet nurse; Mary Howard, widowed but influential at court; Elizabeth Boleyn, mother of a controversial queen; and Elizabeth Barton, a peasant girl who would be lauded as a prophetess. Their stories are interwoven with studies of topics ranging from Tudor toys to contraception to witchcraft, painting a portrait of the lives of queens and serving maids, nuns and harlots, widows and chaperones. Norton brings this vibrant period to colorful life in an evocative and insightful social history.
