Book Philosophy and the Martial Arts

Download or read book Philosophy and the Martial Arts written by Graham Priest and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first substantial academic book to lay out the philosophical terrain within the study of the martial arts and to explore the significance of this fascinating subject for contemporary philosophy. The book is divided into three sections. The first section concerns what philosophical reflection can teach us about the martial arts, and especially the nature and value of its practice. The second section deals with the other direction of the dialectical interplay between philosophy and the martial arts: how the martial arts can inform philosophical issues important in their own right. Finally, because many of the notable martial arts are of Asian origin, there are particularly close links between the arts and Asian philosophies – and Buddhism in particular – and therefore the last section is devoted to this topic. The essays in this collection deal with a wide range of philosophical issues: normative ethics, meta-ethics, aesthetics, phenomenology, the philosophy of mind, Ancient Greek and Buddhist thought. By demonstrating the very real nature of the engagement between the martial arts and philosophy, this book is essential reading for any serious student or scholar with an interest in the martial arts, Eastern philosophy, the philosophy of sport, or the study of physical culture.

Book The Changing Vampire of Film and Television

Download or read book The Changing Vampire of Film and Television written by Tim Kane and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-01-09 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vampires have been a fixture of film since Bela Lugosi brought Bram Stoker's Dracula to life on the big screen in 1931. Over the decades the genre has been far from static, as vampire narratives changed and evolved with the appetites of their viewing public. First depicted as formally dressed villains, vampires would later be portrayed as supernatural beings with some human characteristics, and still later as sympathetic figures. Focusing on 19 representative films and television productions, this critical study tracks the evolutionary changes of the screen vampire. It explores the factors that cause a genre to change and examines the alternating cycles of audience expectation. The author identifies three distinct modes of depiction: the Malignant Cycle (1931-1948), comprised primarily of the Universal films; the Erotic Cycle (1957-1985), which encompasses Hammer films and popular television shows such as Dark Shadows; and the Sympathetic Cycle (1987-present) including recent offerings such as The Lost Boys, Interview with the Vampire and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Each film is evaluated in seven key areas including the act of the vampire biting the victim; process of the victim's infection; physical appearance and demeanor of the vampire and the vampire expert; and the eventual destruction of the vampire. Appendices include a complete filmography of the films examined. Instructors considering this book for use in a course may request an examination copy here.

Book excerpt: While exploring the old orchard after school, Angie and Rashad debate a vocabulary word they have to define for homework: "majesty." Is it greatest: 'power'? 'age' 'beauty' or 'size'? In the orchard, they discover a magical creature - an old, broken down window calling itself 'AboGado.' When AboGado volunteers to take them places, Rashad readily agrees, while Angie is not so sure, wanting a little more information about the safe uses of the creature's abilities. She agrees to one trip as a trial. AboGado takes them to visit mountains to explore their word-assignment. Ancient Denali is reclusive, hiding behind his clouds, while Fuji is vain about his beauty. Mauna Kea (the baby of the bunch age-wise) complains about not being taken seriously as the world's biggest, while Kilimanjaro offers his opinion about both 'biggest', and a comment about 'tallest, ' with a recommendation that they visit Everest. Before they decide, AboGado takes them to see Olympus Mons, on Mars, Maxwell Montes, on Venus, and Rheasilvia, on asteroid Vesta. There is, of course, no answer to this question, but the mountains clarify aspects of the word. Upon their safe return, Angie assumes custody of the magical creature. With foreword by Dr. Chris Russell, leader of the Dawn Mission to asteroids Vesta and Ceres. A glossary of technical terms, and index, are included. Dr. Yvonne Pendleton [astronomer] "The book concept is spectacular! The series is amazing! I love this little character, AboGado! (I know his NUMBER!), and that the science that comes through loud and clear. The images are the perfect, mesmerizing addition to the creative story. On behalf of children everywhere, and the lucky parents who will read these stories multiple times, thank you."

Every year, supporting members of WorldCon nominate their favorite stories first published during the previous year to determine the top five in each category for the final Hugo Award ballot. Between the announcement of the ballot and the Hugo Award ceremony at WorldCon, these works often become the center of much attention (and contention) across fandom. But there are more stories loved by the Hugo voters, stories on the longer nomination list that WSFS publishes after the Hugo Award ceremony at WorldCon. The Long List Anthology Volume 2 collects 18 fiction stories from that nomination list, along with 2 essays from the book Letters to Tiptree that was also on the nomination list, totaling over 500 pages of fiction by writers from all corners of the world. Within these pages you will find a mix of science fiction and fantasy and horror, the dramatic and the lighthearted, from android caretakers to Lovecraftian romances, from adventures to quests and more. There is a wide variety of styles and types of stories here, and something for everyone. The stories included are: "Damage" by David D. Levine "Pockets" by Amal El-Mohtar "Today I Am Paul" by Martin L. Book Steampunk III Steampunk Revolution

Download or read book Steampunk III Steampunk Revolution written by Ann VanderMeer and published by Tachyon Publications. This book was released on 2012-10-05 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Playfully mashing up the romantic elegance of the Victorian era with whimsically modernized technology, the wildly popular steampunk genre is here to stay. Now...long live the revolution! Steampunk Revolution features a renegade collective of writers and artists, including steampunk legends and hot, new talents rebooting the steam-driven past and powering it into the future. Lev Grossman’s “Sir Ranulph Wykeham-Rackham, GBE, a.k.a. Roboticus the All-Knowing” is the Six-Million-Dollar Steampunk Man, possessing appendages and workings recycled from metal parts, yet also fully human, resilient, and determined. Bruce Sterling’s “White Fungus” introduces steampunk’s younger cousin, salvage-punk, speculating on how cities will be built in the future using preexisting materials. Cat Valente’s “Mother Is a Machine” explores the merging of man and machine and a whole new form of parenting. In Jeff VanderMeer’s anti-steampunk story “Fixing Hanover,” a creator must turn his back on his creation because it is so utterly destructive. And Cherie Priest presents “The Clockroach,” a new and very unsettling mode of transportation. Going far beyond corsets and goggles, Steampunk Revolution is not just your granddad’s zeppelin—it’s an even wilder ride.
