Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Transport Road At sunrise, our native transport-riders began to inspan, at least a couple of hours too late. Then they went across for coffee with the concertina-player, and, after that, the driver of our wagon remembered that he was short of tobacco, and made a tour round the outspan, endeavouring to borrow some. Meanwhile, the unfortunate cattle, hungry, thirsty - they had had no water for over twenty four hours - weary, even before they had started to plough through the eleven miles of heavy sand ahead of them, stood with heads hanging down, as though the mere weight of the yokes was too much for them, appar ently too listless even to try and flick Off the loathsome flies which swarmed round them in thousands. The sun was well above the trees when we finally trekked away from that unwholesome spot. Within the first half mile, every one of our wagons had stuck in the sand, and had had to be hooked out by the other spans; and, raw though we were, we had already dis covered that, not only were the cattle leg - weary and hungry, but their lack of training made them practically valueless at the moment. Book Highways and Highway Transportation Classic Reprint

Download or read book Highways and Highway Transportation Classic Reprint written by George Richard Chatburn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Highways and Highway Transportation The following pages on Highways and Highway Trans portation do not pretend to be an exhaustive treatise on the subject, but rather a glimpse of the vast development ofthe humble road and its office as an agency for transportation. Possibly the grandeur of the mountains is best appreciated by one who lives among them, who climbs their acclivitous heights, who daily experiences their power and majesty, and measures their magnitude by grim muscular exertion. But, even so, it would be foolish to contend that he who gets his information from the seat of a Pullman car receives no benefit from the hasty glimpse, or, that his imagination is not quickened and cultured by the experience. In writ ing this book, then, I have had constantly in mind the myriads of people who have not the time, and possibly not the facilities, to search the pages of the literature of the past for the origin and development, or to work out their present importance, of our amplification of roads and of road uses. It is felt that many of these people laudably desire a conversational knowledge of the origin, evolution and present status of highway transportation, even though it be glimpsed by a'very rapid passage through a very large subject. The primary objects have therefore been, to sketch briefly and simply the development of the transportation systems of the United States, to indicate their importance and mutual relations, to present some practical methods used in the operation of highway transport and to make occa sional suggestions for the betterment of the road as a usable machine for the benefit and pleasure of mankind. Book Highway Transportation Re Makes America Classic Reprint

Download or read book Highway Transportation Re Makes America Classic Reprint written by National Highway Users Conference and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Highway Transportation Re-Makes America Outstanding in the progress of highway transportation in recent years is the uplifting of safety standards. Highway fatalities during the first half of 1939 were about a fifth less than they were a few years ago. At that rate, more than lives are being saved annually because of these improved safety condi tions, and the outlook is that continued progress in that direction will be made in the future. Better motor vehicles and better roads, plus a driving public which is becoming educated to the simple rules of safety, are making highway transportation safer. To day it is safer to ride a mile in an automobile than ever before, despite the great increase in highway traffic. Book Chicago s Highways Old and New

Download or read book Chicago s Highways Old and New written by Milo Milton Quaife and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-22 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chicago's Highways, Old and New: From Indian Trail to Motor Road The period from the incorporation of Chicago to the coming of the railroads (from I837 to 18 as I view it, was the critical period of Chicago's history. Citizens Of the Village of about people, surrounded by miles of flat, marshy land, had little basis to expect a big town here except the hope of a connection with the Mississippi River waterway system through a canal, which it was hoped sometime, somehow, might be built and which, eleven years afterwards, was, after various vicissitudes, completed. In the meantime, the town grew steadily. Its exports Of raw material and imports of manufactured goods, as shown by the meagre port records of the time, increased pretty steadily and were, at all times, greater in amount than necessary for the support of the little town, indicating that, in spite Of poor roads and bad transportation, its people were doing business with the hinterland and making Chicago, in that early day, the central market for surrounding territory. Dr. Quaife has happily selected this period for his book, and in admirable fashion has pictured the life, the travelers, and transportation methods before the coming Of the canal and the railroads; he describes an eventful period which has hereto fore had but little consideration, and has succeeded in linking the old with the new in a most interesting way. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lincoln Highway: The Story of a Crusade That Made Transportation History When man made use of natural or unimproved means of transportation only, his progress socially and culturally was slow; when he developed mechanical means of moving from place to place, it was accelerated. The modern highway and its complement, the auto mobile, together represent the broadest means oi land transportation yet attained. It is impossible to separate these two factors; the automobile is worthless without the improved road and the road is of limited value without the automobile. Together, they have lengthened the span of average life appreciably. They have reduced the amount of time we must spend in travel. They have emancipated man from provincialism. They have given him quick and easy means of direct contact with distant communities. They have opened up to him, for business or enjoy ment, thousands of square miles of country, educated him to the healthfulness of outdoor travel and recrea tion, enabled him to live amid more healthful sur roundings at no sacrifice of convenience. Having lost much sleep while at the bedside of an elderly sister in Monett, mo., during her last illness, the old fellow had dozed Off to sleep after leaving Vinita, and had not aroused until midway between Tulsa and Sapulpa. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Highways Green Book: Third Annual Edition, 1922 O combine in one volume a compendium Of the outstanding highway activities Of the past year and a forecast of the future is the Object of the Highways Green Book. Doubtless the most noteworthy highway achievement Of 1921 was the passage of the Federal Highway Act which for the first time confines Federal aid road funds to a definite system of inter state and inter-county roads comprising not over seven per cent of the total mileage in each State and which at the same time pro vides at the suggestion of President Harding, a plan by which these roads are to be adequately maintained.
