THE PATRIARCHS "After these things the word of the Lord came unto Abram in a vision, saying, 'Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward."--Gen. xv. I. THE conditions of the life of men are indeed greatly altered since Adam first lived in Eden in the full and constant intercourse with God, which was as yet undisturbed by sin. But God, we may well believe, has not altered His own purpose. Man was created for free and willing response to Him. It was the inevitable possibility, when man was made capable of uncoerced and freely chosen service, that he might not choose aright. He has made the self-willed choice, and great and increasing harm has come of it. But God does not abandon His design. The conditions are grievously changed for the worse, and response among men to the voice of God is rare, but it is not wholly absent. From the first, it would seem, in the midst of much evil and rebellion, God is not wholly forgotten. Here and there a man is found who, at least in some measure, "walks with God" and knows Him. God is still ready to reveal Himself, still desirous to communicate the knowledge of Himself to man; still He would evoke, wherever man is ready, the response of loyal and faithful devotion. He waits for the answer wherever throughout the whole of humankind it may be found. He "is no respecter of persons, but in every nation he that feareth Him and worketh righteousness is acceptable to Him." But for a long time there is little or no regard. And, at last, when in course of time some remembrance and desire and response are found, it is mainly in one godly man and his children, and in the people descended from him, who are thus enabled to become a centre of very gradual but growing light to the world. It seems, ...

Book The Old Testament Law for the Life of the Church

Download or read book The Old Testament Law for the Life of the Church written by Richard E. Averbeck and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2022-09-06 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the early days of the church to the present, the Old Testament Law has been a subject of much confusion, debate, and outright theological division. And with good reason: the way Christians understand the Law has massive implications for their individual lives and for the life of the church. To sort through the numerous interpretations and approaches to this thorny issue, we need to start with a solid knowledge of the Law itself. Richard Averbeck provides a comprehensive, accessible discussion of how the Law fits into the arc of the Bible and its relevance to the church today. Beginning with the way God intended the Law to work in its original historical and cultural context, he then explores the New Testament perspective on the Law. Averbeck identifies three biblical theological theses: the Law is good, the Law is weak, and the Law is a unified whole. Rejecting common partitions between categories of law, he makes the case that the whole Law applies to the Christian. Our task is to discern how it applies in the light of Christ. The Old Testament Law for the Life of the Church invites readers to consider how all of Scripture is illuminating and useful for God's people. The church, as the new temple, has much to learn from the Law and about what it means for our doctrine and practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible has played a critical role in the story of Judaism, modernity, and identity. Penny Schine Gold examines the arena of children's education and the role of the Bible in the reshaping of Jewish identity, especially in the United States in the 1920s and 1930s, when a second generation of Eastern European Jews engaged the task of Americanizing Jewish culture, religion, and institutions. Professional Jewish educators based in the Reform movement undertook a multifaceted agenda for the Bible in America: to modernize it, harmonize it with American values, and move it to the center of the religious school curriculum. Through public schooling, the children of Jewish immigrants brought America home; it was up to the adults to fashion a Judaism that their children could take back out into America. Because of its historic role in the development of Judaism and its cultural significance in American life, Gold finds, the Bible provided Jews with vital links to both the past and the present. The ancient sacred text of the Bible, transformed into highly abridged and amended "Bible tales," was brought into service as a bridge between tradition and modernity.Gold analyzes these American developments with reference to the intellectual history of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Europe, innovations in public schooling and social theory, Protestant religious education, and later versions of children's Bibles in the United States and Israel. She shows that these seemingly simple children's books are complex markers of the pressing concerns of Jews in the modern world.
