Book Swedes of the Delaware Valley

Download or read book Swedes of the Delaware Valley written by Margaret Murray Thorell and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first Swedish settlers in America embarked from Gothenburg, Sweden, and sailed into Delaware Bay, arriving at what is now Wilmington. The fearless Swedish and Finnish settlers left their mark in the Delaware Valley and on many sites in the area, particularly its churches and famous log cabins. The photographs in Images of America: Swedes of the Delaware Valley depict the depth of Swedish American influence on the area, from early log cabins to John Morton, signer of the Declaration of Independence, to IKEA and the American Swedish Historical Museum. The museum, located in the heart of the Delaware Valley, is dedicated to preserving and promoting Swedish American culture, heritage, and traditions.

Book Making Arms in the Machine Age

Download or read book Making Arms in the Machine Age written by James J. Farley and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making Arms in the Machine Age traces the growth and development of the United States Arsenal at Frankford, Pennsylvania, from its origin in 1816 to 1870. During this period, the arsenal evolved from a small post where skilled workers hand-produced small arms ammunition to a full-scale industrial complex employing a large civilian workforce. James Farley uses the history of the arsenal to examine larger issues including the changing technology of early nineteenth-century warfare, the impact of new technology on the United States Army, and the reactions of workers and their families and communities to the coming of industrialization. Shortly after the War of 1812, the U. S. Army founded several new arsenals, including Frankford, to build up supplies of arms and ammunition then in short supply. At that time, the Army was held in low regard because of its perceived poor performance in the war, so the arrival of arsenals was not welcomed. By 1870, however, the arsenal at Frankford had integrated itself into the community and become a valued and respected member of it. Farley argues that the Ordnance Department of the U. S. Army created an industrial system of manufacture at Frankford well in advance of private industry. He also contends that the evolution of the Army into an employer of a large-scale civilian workforce helped to end the isolation and anti-militarism that plagued it after the War of 1812. Farley's study joins recent work in the history of technology, such as Judith McGaw's That Wonderful Machine, that seeks to understand technological change in its social and cultural context.

Download or read book West Chester Pike written by Stephen J. Edgcumbe and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning 20 miles, West Chester Pike, part of Pennsylvania Route 3, connects Philadelphia with the borough of West Chester. From east to west, it passes through suburban communities in Delaware and Chester Counties, namely Millbourne, Upper Darby, Haverford, Marple, Newtown, Edgmont, Willistown, Westtown, East Goshen, and West Goshen. Known early on as the West Chester Road, the route began as a dirt road used to meet the needs of area settlers, mainly Quakers, farmers, and mill owners. In the mid-1800s, formal requests for the construction of a more reliable and easy-to-navigate state roadway came from farmers and mill owners west of Philadelphia who were seeking easier access to markets in the city. West Chester Pike looks at the history of the roadway as it transformed from a simple, rural, dirt road to the bustling four-lane, suburban highway and mostly commercial corridor used today by thousands of area residents, commuters, and commercial workers.
