Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Printer and the Modern Press In 1844 I wrote, and published in my series of 'The Weekly Volume' William Caxton, a Biography. That little work sold as largely as any of the collection. It will not be reprinted, as I have cancelled the stereotype plates. In the present work I have remodelled that biography; rendering it a more compact narrative of the state of knowledge before the invention of printing, of the personal history of the man who brought the invention to England, and of the nature of his efforts to diffuse information amongst his countrymen. This account forms the First Part of this volume. The Second Part embraces a very broad view of the Progress of the Press to our own day, especially in relation to the important subject of Cheap Popular Literature. In treating of the remarkable revolution of our times in the prices of books, I cannot avoid incidentally noticing some of my own labours in that direction. I have done so as slightly as possible; and, I trust, in the impartial spirit of an honest chronicler. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Triumphs of the Printing Press Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Triumphs of the Printing Press Classic Reprint written by Walter Jerrold and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Triumphs of the Printing Press It is a remarkable thing, as a French writer has pointed out, that the only art which can record all others should, practically, have forgotten to record its own history. The story of the invention and rise of the most potent factor in the spread of knowledge - one might almost say in the development of civilization - is marked by all too many gaps and surmises. Its origin, although so recent, is yet wrapped more or less in impenetrable mystery. The very name of the man to whom the world owes the art of printing cannot be decided with absolute certainty. It is generally agreed that the weight of evidence is in favour of Gutenberg as the inventor, and Mentz as the city in which he laboured to so good a purpose. Book excerpt: Despite the fact that, if only by number, small and peripheral cities played an important role in fifteenth and sixteenth-century European print culture, book history has mainly been dominated by monographs on individual big book centres. Through a number of specific case studies, which deploy a variety of methods and a wide range of sources, this volume seeks to enhance our understanding of printing and the book trade in small and peripheral European cities in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and to emphasize the necessity of new research for the study of print culture in such cities.

The rapid spread of the new art depended on the reliable mechanism for transferring knowledge. By the end of the seventeenth century, however, the pioneers of manufacturing technology and scientific inquiry were prying away at trade secrecy. This book shows the history of printing manuals from 1683 to the end of the nineteenth century, including some of the rarest in existence from the Cary Collection at Rochester institute of Technology.
