Book The Old Gray Mare

Download or read book The Old Gray Mare written by John S Eberhardt and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 112th Field Artillery Regiment (Horse-Drawn) was a New Jersey Army National Guard unit called into active military service in January of 1941. The Old Gray Mare describes life in this unit, the Army's last horse-drawn field artillery unit, through the eyes of a young lieutenant during the Plattsburg Training Maneuvers in 1939 and during the 112th's post-activation training at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The Old Gray Mare provides an insightful picture of the daily routine in garrison and the field of a horse unit during what proved to be the final year of its existence. It describes the close bonds formed between men and their horses, the care and handling required to maintain a well-trained horse artillery unit, the pride and professionalism developed by "serving the guns", and the archaic, social environment that surrounded this elite formation. It gives witness to the dreaded man and horse-killing stampede of crazed animals as well as the excitement of the polo field that was so much a part of the fabric of the horse artillery. The Old Gray Mare is a light and entertaining book that gives a nostalgic view of a military unit forced out of existence by advances in technology at the beginning of World War II. It is an interesting and unique snapshot of a time and a life-style that no longer exists.

Download or read book Evergreen Review Reader written by Barney Rosset and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2011-10-11 with total page 954 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This selection from the first ten years of the Evergreen Review gives the full flavor of the energy, savvy, excitement, and gall that characterized the magazine during the days of its publication. It also happens to bring together some of the world’s best writers in one volume, in the company of their peers. Evergreen was more than another literary magazine. Founded by Barney Rossett of Grove Press and publishing from 1957 through 1973 (it now exists as an online only magazine), it was the voice of a movement that helped to change the attitudes and prejudices of the culture at large through the language of art—and succeeded. It was always damn the torpedoes and full speed ahead. Here are original short stories by Samuel Beckett and Jack Kerouac (with his “October in the Railroad Earth” predating the publication of On the Road); Allen Ginsberg’s “Howl” (previously published only as a pamphlet); a selection from Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s A Coney Island of the Mind; and a passage from Alexander Trocchi’s Cain’s Book. Also included are a fantastic sample of the original and iconic magazine covers which were works of art themselves—a heavily bearded Ginsberg cavorting in a sport coat and Uncle Sam top hat in 1966—and several reprinted comic strips; notably, Michael O’Donoghue’s “The Adventure of Phoebe Zeit-geist.”

Book Haunted Nights at Drumheller Castle

Download or read book Haunted Nights at Drumheller Castle written by Faly Colaizzi and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2010-08 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jake Eden is restless. He struggles with his paranormal powers and the feeling that there is an unexplained gap or emptiness-something missing-in his young life. This unexplained gap lls him with great sadness and anxiety and haunts him till a resolution is found. While Jake hopes to nd the cause of this emptiness, he and his friends have many encounters with exciting and challenging characters. The kids nd themselves on one adventure after another. On one of these adventures, Jake has a chance encounter with his deceased great-grandfather, who explains who Jake really is, telling him that Jake is destined for greatness. Jake's sadness and anxiety are lied, and the gaps in his life disappear, along with his questions, but not before Jake and his friends pass through a turbulent yet heroic journey around All Hallows Eve. Faly Colaizzi was born Rafaela Faly Burmeister in Chicago, Illinois, in October 1967. Her mother, father, and sister all reside in Chicago land. The author grew up with a love of horses and farmland and is inspired by music of all kinds. She has always had an unwavering love for castles around the world, and she travels to see them when she can. She has quite a wild imagination that never rests, and that makes the perfect basis for her wonderful tale, Haunted Nights at Drumheller Castle. The author graduated from Illinois State University in 1990 and has had a twenty-year career as a sales manager. She is married to Steve Colaizzi, is a working mother of two amazing boys, and is an auntie. She hopes this story, written as a classic Halloween tale, will live on in hearts all over the world."
