Book A Northern Lad

    Book Details:
  • Author : Graham Sutcliffe
  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation
  • Release : 2014-09-03
  • ISBN : 1499089252
  • Pages : 294 pages

Download or read book A Northern Lad written by Graham Sutcliffe and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-09-03 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of a child of the post war baby boom growing up in those far off non-PC days of the fifties and early sixties. The scene is a northern textile town, a town thrown up by the industrial revolution. A town who's seemingly permanent way of life was about to vanish for ever, as the post imperial world arrived. The book ends as the author leaves, tantalisingly close to that threatened day of reckoning that would see the place change forever. He would never return as anything more than a casual visitor. The tale is told tongue in cheek. It pokes fun at much and embroiders much, rather than keeping to the strict facts and figures. In this way school teachers and the like are often described rather unkindly and their pupils are mostly shown as awkward and uncouth. This is definitely not a story of the swinging sixties; this is about a northern town where the mini-skirt wouldnt appear until long after Londoners abandoned it.

Book Grumpy Old Rock Star

Download or read book Grumpy Old Rock Star written by Rick Wakeman and published by Random House. This book was released on 2009-08-28 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around about August 1948, Mr and Mrs Cyril Wakeman had an early night and some time later, at Perivale in Middlesex, Mrs Wakeman produced a bonny baby son. They named him Richard, but he quickly became known as Rick. Rick was a likeable little fellow who had a talent for the piano and for making trouble. Music became Rick's life - he joined a popular music group called Yes and became a legend. Much later he became a Grumpy Old Man who appears on Countdown, hosts a hugely popular radio show on Planet Rock and performs a one-man show telling stories about his rather extraordinary life. Which is where this book you are holding comes in. Mr Wakeman is simply one of the great storytellers of our age - let's face it, he has some fabulous material. It seemed a shame that some of the funniest yarns should not be more widely known. So he accepted some cash and here we are. Curl up by the fire with a Grumpy Old Rock Star and your nearest and dearest. We defy you not to want to read it aloud and laugh.

New experiences are encountered and dreams are realised that go way beyond a year of backpacking abroad. Read her story of learning to trust the instincts inside and to trust others too, finally moving on from the past and making a new future for herself and for her adult children. Book excerpt: A new selection of Paul Durcan's finest poems, published in celebration of his 80th birthday 'He has written immortal poems. I revere him' Michael Longley For fifty years the poet Paul Durcan has explored and questioned a world both real and imagined. Steeped in the goings-on of Ireland and preoccupied with its concerns, he has delighted, enriched and unsettled his readers. His prodigious output of more than twenty collections bursts with poems that are courageously personal and passionately spiritual – a body of work that contains multitudes. ‘The great enemy of art is the ego’ says Durcan. ‘It keeps getting in the way. One needs the ego to disappear so that I become you; I become the people walking up and down the street.’ First published in 1967, Durcan remains the most of companionable of poets. His vivacity and ability to surprise has never been clearer than in this new selection of eighty of his finest poems, published in celebration of his 80th birthday. Book The Cruel Stars of the Night

Download or read book The Cruel Stars of the Night written by Kjell Eriksson and published by Minotaur Books. This book was released on 2007-05-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When The Princess of Burundi was published by Thomas Dunne Books, American critics hailed Kjell Eriksson as Sweden's Ed McBain, and they compared him to Henning Mankell. Now The Cruel Stars of the Night, the next in this internationally acclaimed crime series, unveils a spellbinding new tale again featuring police inspector Ann Lindell. The Cruel Stars of the Night opens one snowy day when thirty-five-year-old Laura Hindersten goes to the police to report that her father, a local professor, is missing. Inspector Ann Lindell and her colleagues can find no motive for the man's disappearance. And when the corpses of two elderly men do turn up, neither of the dead men is the missing academic. Unexpectedly, the police get help from one of the professor's colleagues, who believes there is an astonishing link between the murders and the disappearance of Professor Hindersten. But as the pressure on Lindell increases dramatically, she is shocked to discover that the killer has many more diabolical schemes in store. Combining heart-pounding suspense with brilliant psychological insight, The Cruel Stars of the Night moves like a comet as it approaches the cliff-hanging climax. It is sure to win Kjell Eriksson a whole new galaxy of American fans.
