Book The Oklahoma State Capitol

Download or read book The Oklahoma State Capitol written by Trait Thompson and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2022-08 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the Oklahoma State Capitol is as wild and unpredictable as the story of Oklahoma itself. The on-again, off-again effort to construct the statehouse lasted five years as Oklahoma City and Guthrie jockeyed back and forth, each laying claim to the capital city. Finally, seven years after statehood, ground was broken on the capitol. Oklahoma's third governor, Robert Williams, seeking to keep costs low, put himself in charge of the Oklahoma State Capitol Building Commission and made the following controversial decision that would be debated for decades afterwards: he would forgo the structure's planned ornamental dome. It would not be added until 85 years later. Dome or no dome, the capitol has served as the People's House, a place for Oklahomans to let their voices be heard throughout the generations.

Book Art of the Oklahoma State Capitol

Download or read book Art of the Oklahoma State Capitol written by Bob Burke and published by Gilcrease Museum. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring Oklahoma through paintings and sculpture, Art of the Oklahoma State Capitol examines the history of the state from the Indian Territory period through the twentieth century and beyond. Focusing on the art collected by Senator Charles Ford and sponsored by the Oklahoma State Senate Historical Preservation Fund, it reveals--through the vision of talented artists from around the state--the personalities of those who have shaped Oklahoma's past and present. Art of the Oklahoma State Capitol is divided into five sections, each detailing different aspects of the Oklahoma experience. The first section, "Oklahoma's People," features portraits of the famous as well as the ordinary men and women who challenged themselves and those around them to improve life for the citizens of the state and of the nation. The next section, "Oklahoma's Beauty," examines the state's ever-changing landscape, from the Tall Grass Prairie to the flatland of the Panhandle. The section "Living History" presents paintings of historical scenes, both international and local. Sections on bronze sculpture and nineteenth-century lithographs by McKenny and Hall round out the book and demonstrate the depth of the Senate Collection. Senator Ford has personally selected each work of art in this unique collection. Showcasing works by Charles Banks Wilson, Mike Wimmer, Linda Tuma Roberston, and many others, this book highlights some of the more prominent contemporary artists working in Oklahoma.

Book Three Days Before the Shooting

Download or read book Three Days Before the Shooting written by Ralph Ellison and published by Modern Library. This book was released on 2011-04-26 with total page 1138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At his death in 1994, Ralph Ellison left behind several thousand pages of his unfinished second novel, which he had spent nearly four decades writing. Five years later, Random House published Juneteenth, drawn from the central narrative of Ellison’s epic work in progress. Three Days Before the Shooting . . . gathers in one volume all the parts of that planned opus, including three major sequences never before published. Set in the frame of a deathbed vigil, the story is a gripping multigenerational saga centered on the assassination of a controversial, race-baiting U.S. senator who’s being tended to by an elderly black jazz musician turned preacher. Presented in their unexpurgated, provisional state, the narrative sequences brim with humor and tension, composed in Ellison’s magical jazz-inspired prose style. Beyond its compelling narratives, Three Days Before the Shooting . . . is perhaps most notable for its extraordinary insight into the creative process of one of this country’s greatest writers, and an essential, fascinating piece of Ralph Ellison’s legacy.

Book Tonight We Bombed the U S Capitol

Download or read book Tonight We Bombed the U S Capitol written by William Rosenau and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-01-07 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a shocking, never-before-told story from the vaults of American history, Tonight We Bombed the US Capitol takes a close look at the explosive hidden history of M19—the first and only domestic terrorist group founded and led by women—and their violent fight against racism, sexism, and what they viewed as Ronald Reagan’s imperialistic vision for America. In 1981, President Ronald Reagan announced that it was “morning in America.” He declared that the American dream wasn’t over, but the United States needed to lower taxes, shrink government control, and flex its military muscles abroad to herald what some called “the Reagan Revolution.” At the same time, a tiny band of American-born, well-educated extremists were working for a very different kind of revolution. By the end of the 1970s, many radicals had called it quits, but six veteran women extremists came together to finish the fight. These women had spent their entire adult lives embroiled in political struggles: protesting the Vietnam War, fighting for black and Native American liberation, and confronting US imperialism. They created a new organization to wage their war: The May 19th Communist Organization, or “M19,” a name derived from the birthday shared by Malcolm X and Ho Chi Minh, two of their revolutionary idols. Together, these six women carried out some of the most daring operations in the history of domestic terrorism—from prison breakouts and murderous armed robberies, to a bombing campaign that wreaked havoc on the nation’s capital. Three decades later, M19’s actions and shocking tactics still reverberate for many reasons, but one truly sets them apart: unlike any other American terrorist group before or since, M19 was created and led by women. Tonight We Bombed the US Capitol tells the full story of M19 for the first time, alongside original photos and declassified FBI documents. Through the group’s history, intelligence and counterterrorism expert William Rosenau helps us understand how homegrown extremism—a threat that still looms over us today—is born.
