Book Ohio State University Neighborhoods

Download or read book Ohio State University Neighborhoods written by Doreen N. Uhas Sauer and published by Arcadia Library Editions. This book was released on 2009-07 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ohio State University's surrounding neighborhoods predate the establishment of the nation's largest university. What emerged after the university's founding from NECKO to Glen Echo was a diverse community of people, professions, housing styles, educational experiments, and activism. Despite intense development pressures after World War II and inevitable change to a densely populated area, 80 percent of the historic housing stock remains. The university area neighborhoods have more districts on the National Register of Historic Places and city-protected historic districts than any other area in Columbus. In addition to longtime residents, the University District has been the collegiate incubator of more famous people than any other neighborhood in Ohio--humorist James Thurber, bicycle daredevil Conn Baker, writer Dorothy Canfield Fisher, Dr. Charles Pavey, vaudevillian Elsie Janis, and athlete Jesse Owens, to name a few.

Book Between Campus and Community

Download or read book Between Campus and Community written by Ellen Manovich and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The Ohio State University, a land-grant institution, is located in Columbus, the fifteenth largest city in the nation. Each other's oldest neighbor, the university and the adjacent University District neighborhoods have influenced one another and come into conflict throughout the twentieth century. This project explores the twentieth century interactions between the Ohio State University and the University District neighborhoods from a demographic, geographic, architectural, and historical perspective. It uses the experiences of four front-facing streets in the University District from 1920 to the present to ask questions about larger issues of town-gown relations, diversity, conflict, and change over time. Methods include quantitative analysis of demographic trends from Census and city directory data, tracking of architectural changes from maps and photographs, oral history interviews, and examination of OSU and University District archived materials. The project's findings focus upon the scope of Ohio State's impact upon the neighborhoods, the changes on the neighborhood streets, and the connections, perceptions, and interactions between OSU and the UD. As present day issues such as student housing and neighborhood development provoke debate, both neighborhood and university actors will benefit from a better understanding of past and present relationships between the university and the community.

Book The Ohio State University in the Sixties

Download or read book The Ohio State University in the Sixties written by William J. Shkurti and published by Trillium. This book was released on 2016 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At 5:30 p.m. on May 6, 1970, an embattled Ohio State University President Novice G. Fawcett took the unprecedented step of closing down the university. Despite the presence of more than 1,500 armed highway patrol officers, Ohio National Guardsmen, deputy sheriffs, and Columbus city police, university and state officials feared they could not maintain order in the face of growing student protests. Students, faculty, and staff were ordered to leave; administrative offices, classrooms, and laboratories were closed. The campus was sealed off. Never in the first one hundred years of the university's existence had such a drastic step been necessary. Just a year earlier the campus seemed immune to such disruptions. President Nixon considered it safe enough to plan an address at commencement. Yet a year later the campus erupted into a spasm of violent protest exceeding even that of traditional hot spots like Berkeley and Wisconsin. How could conditions have changed so dramatically in just a few short months? Using contemporary news stories, long overlooked archival materials, and first-person interviews, The Ohio State University in the Sixties explores how these tensions built up over years, why they converged when they did and how they forever changed the university.

Book The Economies Of Central City Neighborhoods

Download or read book The Economies Of Central City Neighborhoods written by Richard Bingham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Economies of Central City Neighborhoods Bingham and Zhang examine the location of industry employment in a variety of producer and consumer-oriented industries in relation to major neighborhood characteristics such as demographic, labor force, socioeconomic, and housing variables. While the primacy of poverty is an aspect of central city neighborhoods that drives the growth and decline of neighborhood economies, it implies the significance of effective intervention at early stages of neighborhood economic disintegration. Neighborhood cluster of industries suggests a direction of neighborhood redevelopment, and the pervasive spill-over effects of this necessitate the coordination among redevelopment initiatives of bordering neighborhoods. The research in this text contributes to the urban literature by providing an industry-by-industry analysis of the economies of central city sub-areas in Ohio. This study is informative and illuminating to central city revitalization/redevelopment planning and related efforts that often take place at the neighborhood level.

Book Serving Children and Families Through Community University Partnerships

Download or read book Serving Children and Families Through Community University Partnerships written by Thomas R. Chibucos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A consistently identified criticism about contemporary higher education is that academia is not playing a visible role in contributing to the improvement of the lives of people in the community - as the lives are lived on a day-to-day basis. However, there has been a long tradition of such `Outreach Scholarship' in America, and this focus is gaining renewed attention, at least in part, because policy makers and philanthropic organizations are pressing universities and colleges to use their learning resources in ways that more directly benefit society. Universites have listened to, and continue to heed, such appeals. Serving Children and Families Through Community-University Partnerships: Success Stories illustrates such work by presenting several dozen exemplary `success stories' of community-university partnerships that serve to enhance the lives of children, youth, and families. These illustrations are drawn from collaborations across the breadth of the nation and reflect the work of many diverse colleges and universities. Moreover, these partnerships involve an array of target audiences, ranging across the individual life span from infancy through old age and involving a diverse set of groups and organizations. In addition, this work takes many forms, for example, technical assistance, evaluation, training, program design and delivery, demonstration or participatory, action research, and dissemination. The book is useful to two broad audiences: (1) Individuals, in and out of academia, in decision-making roles that directly impact what gets done or does not get done in colleges and universities; and (2) Persons outside academia who are concerned with creating positive change across a wide-range of issues pertinent to the lives of youth, families, and communities. This volume will guide universities and communities to work together to promote positive development in the diverse children, families, and communities of our nation.
