Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1920 edition. Excerpt: ... Critical Notes. v. 1. Frankenberg and Preuschen have made the suggestion that we should translate 'see yourselves in Him', on the supposition that a primitive Greek eavrous or avrou's has been misunderstood by the translator, who took the word to refer to the 'eyes' and not to the persons who were using the eyes. The point deserves a careful consideration; in Ode xv. 3 special importance is attached to eyes. v. 2. Gressmann unnecessarily changes o. 'to His Spirit' into Om.oj. 'to His Herrlichkeit'. v. 3. The MS. seems to have the meaningless JLT.. Its correction into %1. is almost certain. The root being-i, with a guttural hamza, phonetically it is more correct to read Jk-i., but it is a well-known fact that the sound hamza is frequently softened into a weak letter. Expository Notes. This little Ode, like the preceding one, is Sapiential in character: the 'mirror' which the Lord is declared to be, is the 'unspotted mirror of the operation of God' in the seventh chapter of the Wisdom of Solomon. We have shown in the introductory chapters how familiar Ephrem was with this Ode, and how he manipulated it into liturgical language. If we keep the Sapiential language before our mind, we shall see the meaning of the close of the Ode as well as its opening: the believer, who clothes himself with the Divine Holiness, becomes also a spotless person (d/cAi'San-os), and is enjoined to be ' without stain' at all time before Him. In the Acts of John there is a curious hymn sung by the Apostle to his disciples before his apprehension; at the close of the hymn, which seems to belong to Christ speaking in him, we read 'I am a Lamp to him that sees me: I am a Mirror to him that considers me: I am a Door to him that knocks to me: I am a Way to...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psalms of Solomon is an ancient Jewish writing from the Second Century BC. As a primary source written by a Jewish writer living during the turmoil of the desecration of the Jerusalem Temple by King Antiochus IV Epiphanes of Syria, who forced Jews to eat non-kosher food, abstain from circumcision, and break the Sabbath Day, Psalms of Solomon accurately depicts the angst and trepidation that seized the whole Jewish populace in Jerusalem. Although the poet-composer of Psalms of Solomon witnessed the eventual victory of Jews over the Syrians in Jerusalem along with other Jewish survivors, he did not see the victory of the Hasmonean Revolt and the Maccabees as a total victory. The Maccabees kicked out the Zadokite priests from the leadership of the Jerusalem Temple when they rededicated the Temple. This Temple leadership of the descendants of Zadok, who was the first High Priest of the Jerusalem Temple, was established by King Solomon and maintained by the descendants of King Solomon. It was understood that the Zadokites continue to be the leaders of the Jerusalem Temple in the Second Temple Period, after returning from the Exile and rebuilding the Jerusalem Temple destroyed by the Babylonians. King David and his descendants would rule over Israel forever, and the Zadokites would be the High Priests of the Jerusalem Temple forever. When the Hasmoneans rededicated the Jerusalem Temple without Zadokite priests in Jerusalem Temple leadership, it was going against tradition held for hundreds of years. But the Jerusalem Jewish populace went along with the Maccabean program of placing their own in the office of the High Priest and top leadership in the Jerusalem Temple against long-held Jewish tradition. The military victory over Syrians made them untouchable heroes. And in the lapse of continuity with past tradition in terms of Jerusalem leadership, the Hasmoneans were not only able to seize the office of the High Priest, but they managed to set in motion the usurpation of kingship by the Hasmoneans. Psalms of Solomon was written by a Zadokite in protest of all that was happening in Jerusalem. The poet-composer wanted the Zadokites back in position in the Jerusalem Temple, as has been the tradition for hundreds of years. But the Zadokite poet-composer could not write a blatant condemnation of the Hasmoneans because the Hasmoneans were already entrenched in their power positions. Thus, the Zadokite poet-composer wrote Psalms of Solomon using metaphors and symbolic language that couched his propaganda for the Zadokites.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ...Reviews: "While the Psalms of Solomon, dating from the middle of the first century B. C, have long been known, a Syriac version of them has been found whose MS. is accompanied by the MS. of the hitherto unknown collection here entitled 'The Odes of Solomon'—a document of higher antiquity than any other non-canonical Christian writing. . . . These Odes are regarded as produced amidst Jewish-Christian influences, but, at least in part, at a somewhat earlier date, and are justly pronounced 'a memorial of the first importance for rightly understanding the beliefs and experiences of the primitive church.' " —Outlook "The matter presented to us in this humble guise bids fair to stand forth as one of the greatest treasures of early Christian literature. 1n the case of a work destined to be so widely discussed and to play so important a role in the history of early Christian literature, one wonders what could have induced the experienced editor to omit all indices. The fine reserve, the carefully judicial, conservative spirit so characteristic of the best English scholarship of today, is not the least of the good qualities of this book." —M. Sprengling "Dr. Harris's introduction, like his notes on the separate Odes, throws a flood of light on the topics to which we have referred and many others. There is, however, likely to be much difference of opinion on not a few of his details." —Bible World "We may congratulate ourselves that this first English version of the Odes is the work of a scholar of so much literary feeling as Dr. Harris. He has nobly interpreted these beautiful works of religion. We only regret that the editor has given us no index of his work or the Odes. Patristic study in particular is indebted afresh to Dr. Harris for a new monument of the greatest antiquity and interest." —E. J. Goodspeed (Bible World) "I have endeavoured to do honour to the gifted editor even while criticising him. Able and instructive (even on folklore) as Dr. Harris's introduction is, it suffers through his not having recognized that the passages which are most plainly Christian are interpolations." —T. K. Cheyne "A notable addition has been made to our scanty collection of early Christian books." —Outlook
