Download or read book Elderly Slaves of the Plantation South written by Stacey K. Close and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elderly slaves contributed substantially to the creation and perpetuation of the unique African American culture and antebellum plantation society in the South. Interwoven with this major argument are two subthemes. One centers on the fact that by the late antebellum period elderly slaves were some of the chief transmitters of Africanism; the other focuses on how gender based distinctions of the elderly became blurred. Although the roles of the elderly often changed, elderly slaves contributed to the plantation economy. It is also true that those old people who were incapacitated posed serious economic and social concerns for owners, although many of the problems of elderly care were solved by the compassion of slave community members (Ph.D. Dissertation, The Ohio State University, 1992; revised with new preface and index)

Book excerpt: Legend has it, within the Ancient Order of Doubters, that before the advent of time and space a mighty voice thundered across the void, proclaiming, Forthwith the plan, then, declared again with greater force, Forthwith the plan. Alas, there was no entity to respond, no ear to record, no mind to comprehendonly stillness. Thus, this fanciful opening sets the stage for this poetry collection. The free verse offerings cover a range of themesthe imaginative treatment of the Big Bang (Then Came the Explosion), phenomenon of mass shootings (Its All About the Count), World War II heroism (Waitin My Turn), the horror of war in Syria (Omran Daqneesh of Aleppo), childhood memories (That Stream and Catfish Charley), coming of age (Sixteenth Birthday1951), parody of a classic poem (The Listeners, With a Twist), social media shenanigans (A Day in the Life of a Troll), the concluding poem questioning mans fate (So Here We Are), and dozens of others.
Download or read book It s All Relative written by A. J. Jacobs and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 New York Times bestselling author A.J. Jacobs undergoes a hilarious, poignant quest to understand what constitutes family—where it begins and how far it goes—in It’s All Relative, a “thought-provoking…delightful, easy-to-read, informative book” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review). A.J. Jacobs has received some strange emails over the years, but this note was perhaps the strangest: “You don’t know me, but I’m your eighth cousin. And we have over 80,000 relatives of yours in our database.” That’s enough family members to fill Madison Square Garden four times over. Who are these people, A.J. wondered, and how do I find them? So began Jacobs’s three-year adventure to help build the biggest family tree in history. In It’s All Relative, he “muses on the nature of family and the interconnectedness of humanity in this entertaining introduction to the world of genealogy” (Publishers Weekly). Jacobs’s journey would take him to all seven continents. He drank beer with a US president, sung with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and unearthed genetic links to Hollywood actresses and real-life scoundrels. After all, we can choose our friends, but not our family. “Whether he’s posing as a celebrity, outsourcing his chores, or adhering strictly to the Bible, we love reading about the wacky lifestyle experiments of author A.J. Jacobs” (Entertainment Weekly). Now Jacobs upends, in ways both meaningful and hilarious, our understanding of genetics and genealogy, tradition and tribalism, identity and connection. “Whimsical but also full of solid journalism and eye-opening revelations about the history of humanity, It’s All Relative is a real treat” (Booklist, starred review).

Download or read book Long Term Care for the Elderly written by Betty H. Landsberger and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-05-10 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1980s the need for long-term care for elderly people in Western societies was quite obvious from the increasing numbers of old and very old people in the population. Countries had responded in a number of different ways to cope with this need. Originally published in 1985, the central theme of this book is to explore these different ways and to probe beneath the surface level of institutions and specific programs. Beneath this level are a number of layers of care, consisting of attitudes, beliefs and values on a social as well as personal level. Thus, chapters two to six explore the surface level of services, goods, treatments, institutions, etc. provided in different countries for long-term care. Chapter seven looks at another layer, the role of government, chapter eight at ethical issues of human rights and chapter nine at the base layer, the views of elderly people themselves. The book draws mainly on information from the UK, USA, Germany and Scandinavia and will be of interest to all concerned with the health and social welfare of the elderly.
