Download or read book The Ocean of Theosophy Includes the Booklet an Epitome of Theosophy written by William Q. Judge and published by . This book was released on 2016-08-12 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AN attempt is made in the pages of this book to write of Theosophy in such a manner as to be understood by the ordinary reader. Bold statements are made in it upon the knowledge of the writer, but at the same time it is distinctly to be understood that he alone is responsible for what is therein written: the Theosophical Society is not involved in nor bound by anything said in the book, nor are any of its members any the less good Theosophists because they may not accept what he has set down. The tone of settled conviction which may be thought to pervade the chapters is not the result of dogmatism or conceit, but flows from knowledge based upon evidence and experience. Members of the Theosophical Society will notice that certain theories or doctrines have not been gone into. That is because they could not be treated without unduly extending the book and arousing needless controversy. The subject of the Will has received no treatment, inasmuch as that power or faculty is hidden, subtle, undiscoverable as to essence, and only visible in effect. As it is absolutely colorless and varies in moral quality in accordance with the desire behind it, as also it acts frequently without our knowledge, and as it operates in all the kingdoms below man, there could be nothing gained by attempting to enquire into it apart from the Spirit and the desire. No originality is claimed for this book. The writer invented none of it, discovered none of it, but has simply written that which he has been taught and which has been proved to him. It therefore is only a handing on of what has been known before.

Book excerpt: Mr. Judge's The Ocean of Theosophy is a classic of theosophical literature. Written in 1893 as a text to explain the broad themes treated in H.P. Blavatsky's two-volume magnum opus, The Secret Doctrine, it has long been regarded by students of the Wisdom Religion as one of the most valuable "keys" to understanding the latter work. Robert Crosbie described the import of this volume in the following manner: "As the Author's Preface shows, the book was written in such a manner as to be understood by the ordinary reader; the simplicity of the terms used, however, should not mislead the reader into thinking that the work is an elementary one, for behind and within every statement there is a depth of meaning that the careless and superficial fail to perceive. It is really a simplified text-book of the fundamental teachings of Theosophy, and is found by students of the "Secret Doctrine" to be a true abridgment of that great work and a wonderful aid in its comprehension; it was written with that end in view by the only one competent to do so and is there fore earnestly recommended to every student of Theosophy." Students of every variety will gain enormous benefit from the study of both works conjointly. Mr. Judge's Ocean provides a high-level overview - the schematic, if you will - of the subject matter treated in great detail in the Secret Doctrine, and is so very useful in keeping in mind the scope of that work. As Mr. Crosbie further remarked: "The passage of years has served to show, not only the value of this little book, but the status of Mr. Judge as a Teacher. Everything he has written bears impress of his deep knowledge to every real student of Theosophy. Even the ordinary reader cannot fail to perceive that only "One Who Knows" could have so applied Theosophy to the circumstances and conditions of every-day human existence. The earnest student will do well to study conjointly the writings of H. P. Blavatsky and Wm. Q. Judge; from them he will learn Theosophy pure and simple; will recognize the community of knowledge and complete accord that existed between them and will more fully appreciate the mission and nature of those two Personages." The three articles following Mr. Judge's Ocean are drawn from Raghavan Iyer's journal HERMES, published between 1975 and 1990. Their profoundly novel approach to the subject matter of The Secret Doctrine is remarkable and unique in Theosophical writings.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Epitome of Theosophy Mr. Judge accordingly re-wrote entirely the original Tract as put together at his suggestion by Mr. Alexander Fullerton and others, enlarging it to a booklet, and sent the manuscript to the Theosophical Publication Society at London. Its managers wrote back that the treatment was entirely too "deep" for the average mind; that what was needed was something "light." Mr. Judge replied to this criticism in characteristic fashion. His answer will be found in Volume II of the Letters That Have Helped Me, in No. IV of that book. He says (in part): - "It is with great regret that I learn from recent London advices that the Managers of the Society there think that the Tract, 'Epitome of Theosophy,' which appeared in The Path, is 'too advanced to be reprinted now, and that what is needed is a 'stepping-stone from fiction to philosophy.' "Permit me to say that I cannot agree with this opinion, nor with the policy which is outlined by it. The opinion is erroneous, and the policy is weak as well as being out of accord with that of the Masters. "If I had made up that Epitome wholly myself I might have some hesitation in speaking this way, but I did not. The general idea of such a series of tracts was given to me some two years ago, and this one was prepared by several students who know what the people need. It is at once comprehensive and fundamental. It covers most of the ground, and if any sincere reader grasps it he will have food for his reflection of the sort needed. Book excerpt: William Judge is known as one of the central figures of the early school of Theosophy- his works were numerous, but it is perhaps "Epitome..." which contains the most advanced, yet general, overview of some of the beliefs therein. Judge delves into reincarnation, devachan, various eastern concepts and terms, and expounds his beliefs and those of Theosophy within this work. Upon these principles, such spiritual systems have flourished, as the west adopts and adapts eastern systems for use.

Book excerpt: Theosophy, meaning knowledge of or about God, and the term "God" being universally accepted as including the whole of both the known and the unknown, it follows that "Theosophy" must imply wisdom respecting the absolute; and, since the absolute is without beginning and eternal, this wisdom must have existed always. Hence Theosophy is sometimes called the Wisdom-Religion, because from immemorial time it has had knowledge of all the laws governing the spiritual, the moral, and the material.
