Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people fear snakes, and watersnakes in particular have one of the worst reputations of any snake found in North America. Some species are commonly mistaken for venomous cottonmouths, and a few may eat popular game fishes. Unfortunately, few people realize the important roles many watersnakes play in natural ecosystems and, consequently, they are still persecuted in many regions today. Seeking to overcome common misperceptions, J. Whitfield Gibbons and Michael E. Dorcas have compiled North American Watersnakes, the first comprehensive study of all fourteen species of watersnakes found in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Cuba. Individual species accounts explore all aspects of the natural history of watersnakes in North America, including their behavior, physiology, life history, ecology, and conservation. Almost 100 color photographs accompany the text, illustrating all 14 species and nearly all subspecies. Supplementing the species accounts are detailed color maps depicting each species distribution and stunning black-and-white drawings by Peri Mason. Easy-to-use keys help readers to identify specimens at hand.

Book The Principal Diseases of Lower Vertebrates

Download or read book The Principal Diseases of Lower Vertebrates written by H. Reichenbach-Klinke and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Principal Diseases of Lower Vertebrates presents the material published by Heinz H. Reichenbach-Klinke between 1957 and 1962 in three separate volumes as ""Krankheiten der Aquarienfische"" (Alfred Kernen, Stuttgart), ""Krankheiten der Amphibien,"" and ""Krankheiten der Reptilien"" (Gustav Fischer, Stuttgart). The scope of the work has been enlarged with material contributed by E. Elkan who has also done the translation. Representatives of the main groups of parasites affecting fish have been presented as far as possible. The book is organized into three parts covering the diseases of fishes, amphibians, and reptiles. Experience has shown that those who keep, or are interested in, one kind of lower vertebrate will sooner or later also take an interest in one of the other groups. It was therefore thought expedient to include what is at present known of lower vertebrate pathology in one volume, even at the risk of some repetition where fishes, amphibians, and reptiles suffer from similar diseases or are the victims of identical parasites.
