Book The Obvious Orient Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Obvious Orient Classic Reprint written by Albert Bushnell Hart and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Obvious Orient The world abounds in sketchy books upon the East, and the title chosen for this volume is the writer's admission that no one can learn all that there is in the most ancient and inscrutable of the continents in an eight months' experience. On the other hand, the Orient is so unlike the western world that it still has the stimulating effect of novelty and variety. It is astonishing how the books that one reads beforehand on the East fail to include the things which instantly come before the eyes the moment one lands in Asia; even the hasty traveller's record, therefore, adds something to the knowledge of the bewildering and picturesque detail of Oriental life. For this study of the East I have had some advantages in the way of previous investigation and reflection, and the friendship of former students and others now settled in the Orient. Americans in that part of the world never lose their nationality, and the travelling American finds himself welcomed to a partnership in their experiences. Book Rewriting the Orient

Download or read book Rewriting the Orient written by Yunfei Bai and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2024-03-15 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this ambitious volume, Yunfei Bai delves into the creative adaptations of classical Sanskrit, Chinese, and Tibetan literary texts by four renowned nineteenth- and early twentieth-century authors in France and Argentina: Theophile Gautier, Stephane Mallarme, Victor Segalen, and Jorge Luis Borges. Without any knowledge of the source languages, the authors crafted their own French and Spanish retellings based on received translations of these Asian works. Rewriting the Orient not only explores the so far untapped translation-rewriting continuum to trace the pivotal role of Orientalism in the formation of a singular corpus of world literature that goes beyond the Anglophone canon, but also sheds light on a wide range of innovative discursive strategies that readily challenge traditional notions of cultural appropriation.

Book Representations of the Orient in Western Music

Download or read book Representations of the Orient in Western Music written by Nasser Al-Taee and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the cultural, political and religious representations of the Orient in Western music. Dr Nasser Al-Taee traces several threads in a vast repertoire of musical representations, concentrating primarily on the images of violence and sensuality. Al-Taee argues that these prevailing traits are not only the residual manifestation of the Ottoman threat to Western Europe, but also the continuation of a long and complex history of fear and fascination towards the Orient and its Islamic religion. In addition to analyses of musical works, Al-Taee draws on travel accounts, paintings, biographies, and political events to engage with important issues such as gender, race, and religious differences that may have contributed to the variously complex images of the Orient in Western music. The study extends the range of Orientalism to cover eighteenth-century Austria, nineteenth-century Russia, and twentieth-century America. The book challenges those scholars who do not see Orientalism as problematic and tend to ignore the role of musical representations in shaping the image of the Other within a wider interdisciplinary study of knowledge and power.
