Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Obstetrician's Vademecum: Or, Aphorisms on Natural and Difficult Parturition, the Application and Use of Instruments in Preternatural Labours; On Labours Complicated With Hemorrhage, Convulsions, Etc Dr. Denman's Aphorisms on Obstetricy have passed through eight editions. He was the most eminent Obstetrician of his age, and is justly acknowledged as such wherever medicine is cultivated. There never was a physician whose practical opinions were more generally adopted. His works are of standard authority and reference. The following pages were the result of his extensive experience and careful observations. The principles and practice recommended in them, are most admirable and instructive. The justly celebrated Author, actuated by that modesty characteristic of great minds, offered to the world, in this Work, a partial and imperfect view of his practical conclusions. He had given all his views in his Introduction to the Practice of Midwifery. In this little Work, he confined his observations to "The Application and Use of the Forceps and Vectis, to preternatural Labours, and Labours attended with Hemorrhage and Convulsions, &c." Book Simulation in Healthcare Education

Download or read book Simulation in Healthcare Education written by Harry Owen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-03-05 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simulation in healthcare education has a long history, yet in many ways, we have been reinventing the wheel during the last 25 years. Historically, simulators have been much more than simple models, and we can still learn from aspects of simulation used hundreds of years ago. This book gives a narrative history of the development of simulators from the early 1700s to the middle of the 20th century when simulation in healthcare appeared to all but die out. It is organized around the development of simulation in different countries and includes at the end a guide to simulators in museums and private collections throughout the world. The aim is to increase understanding of simulation in the professional education of healthcare providers by exploring the historical context of simulators that were developed in the past, what they looked like, how they were used, and examples of simulator use that led to significant harm and an erosion of standards. The book is addressed to the healthcare simulation community and historians of medicine. The latter in particular will appreciate the identification and use of historic sources written in Latin, German, Italian, French, Polish and Spanish as well as English.

This book was released on 2009-10-20 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Ryan (d. 1840) remains one of the most mysterious figures in the history of medical ethics, despite the fact that he was the only British physician during the middle years of the 19th century to write about ethics in a systematic way. Michael Ryan’s Writings on Medical Ethics offers both an annotated reprint of his key ethical writings, and an extensive introductory essay that fills in many previously unknown details of Ryan’s life, analyzes the significance of his ethical works, and places him within the historical trajectory of the field of medical ethics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medical ethics changed dramatically in the past 30 years because physicians and humanists actively engaged each other in discussions that sometimes led to confrontation and controversy, but usually have improved the quality of medical decision-making. Before then medical ethics had been isolated for almost two centuries from the larger philosophical, social, and religious controversies of the time. There was, however, an earlier period where leaders in medicine and in the humanities worked closely together and both fields were richer for it. This volume begins with the 18th century Scottish Enlightenment when professors of medicine such as John Gregory, Edward Percival, and the American, Benjamin Rush, were close friends of philosophers like David Hume, Adam Smith, and Thomas Reid. They continually exchanged views on matters of ethics with each other in print, at meetings of elite intellectual groups, and at the dinner table. Then something happened, physicians and humanists quit talking with each other. In searching for the causes of the collapse, this book identifies shifts in the social class of physicians, developments in medical science, and changes in the patterns of medical education. Only in the past three decades has the dialogue resumed as physicians turned to humanists for help just when humanists wanted their work to be relevant to real-life social problems. Again, the book asks why, finding answers in the shift from acute to chronic disease as the dominant pattern of illness, the social rights revolution of the 1960's, and the increasing dissonance between physician ethics and ethics outside medicine. The book tells the critical story of how the breakdown in communication between physicians and humanists occurred and how it was repaired when new developments in medicine together with a social revolution forced the leaders of these two fields to resume their dialogue.
