Book The Postage Stamps of the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Postage Stamps of the United States Classic Reprint written by John N. Luff and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Postage Stamps of the United States It is interesting to note, on many of the postmaster's stamps, a survival of the early custom of vouching for the prepayment of postage by means of the postmaster's signature. The New York Postmaster or his deputies placed their initials on the stamps of that city. Mr. Mitchell of New Haven wrote his name on each stamp. The Postmaster of Alexandria numbered his stamps. The stamps of Brattleboro bear a facsimile of the Post master's initials, and on those from Baltimore the signature is reproduced in full. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “[The] book makes you care what happens to its main protagonist, the U.S. Postal Service itself. And, as such, it leaves you at the end in suspense.” —USA Today Founded by Benjamin Franklin, the United States Postal Service was the information network that bound far-flung Americans together, and yet, it is slowly vanishing. Critics say it is slow and archaic. Mail volume is down. The workforce is shrinking. Post offices are closing. In Neither Snow Nor Rain, journalist Devin Leonard tackles the fascinating, centuries-long history of the USPS, from the first letter carriers through Franklin’s days, when postmasters worked out of their homes and post roads cut new paths through the wilderness. Under Andrew Jackson, the post office was molded into a vast patronage machine, and by the 1870s, over seventy percent of federal employees were postal workers. As the country boomed, USPS aggressively developed new technology, from mobile post offices on railroads and airmail service to mechanical sorting machines and optical character readers. Neither Snow Nor Rain is a rich, multifaceted history, full of remarkable characters, from the stamp-collecting FDR, to the revolutionaries who challenged USPS’s monopoly on mail, to the renegade union members who brought the system—and the country—to a halt in the 1970s. “Delectably readable . . . Leonard’s account offers surprises on almost every other page . . . [and] delivers both the triumphs and travails with clarity, wit and heart.” —Chicago Tribune

Book A Comprehensive Catalogue of the Postage Stamps of the United States of America Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Comprehensive Catalogue of the Postage Stamps of the United States of America No reference is made as to postmarks, though in some of the earlier issues Carrier, Steamboat and Paid Cancellations are decidedly rare, as also those shewing year dates. Again certain stamps on entire envelopes are of greater value than if detached, a notable example being the 900. Of 1869 which is priced at 3 in the catalogues, but for which the writer (who has yet to see one) has heard of an offer of 20 to purchase a fine copy on entire! The colour of the obliterating ink may also have a marked effect on the value, green for instance being very scarce in the 1847 Issue. No Imperforate or part perforated varieties of stamps that are normally perforated are treated as varieties, except where such are beyond suspicion owing to their being found in pairs or blocks; and double or misplaced perforations are not listed, though they are frequently met with and probably exist in every issue. Of the misplaced transfers only the most prominent varieties are described. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book I Might Regret This written by Abbi Jacobson and published by Grand Central Publishing. This book was released on 2018-10-30 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the co-creator and co-star of the hit series Broad City, a "poignant, funny, and beautifully unabashed" (Cheryl Strayed) New York Times bestselling essay collection about love, loss, work, comedy, and figuring out who you really are when you thought you already knew. When Abbi Jacobson announced to friends and acquaintances that she planned to drive across the country alone, she was met with lots of questions and opinions: Why wasn't she going with friends? Wouldn't it be incredibly lonely? The North route is better! Was it safe for a woman? The Southern route is the way to go! You should bring mace! And a common one... why? But Abbi had always found comfort in solitude, and needed space to step back and hit the reset button. As she spent time in each city and town on her way to Los Angeles, she mulled over the big questions -- What do I really want? What is the worst possible scenario in which I could run into my ex? How has the decision to wear my shirts tucked in been pivotal in my adulthood? In this collection of anecdotes, observations and reflections--all told in the sharp, wildly funny, and relatable voice that has endeared Abbi to critics and fans alike--readers will feel like they're in the passenger seat on a fun and, ultimately, inspiring journey. With some original illustrations by the author.
