Download or read book Pornography the Longford Report written by Longford Committee Investigating Pornography and published by London : Coronet. This book was released on 1972-01-01 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After seeing the London production of Oh! Calcutta!, the seventh Earl of Longford rose in the House of Lords to deliver an anti-obscenity speech so stirring that it stirred the Earl himself to action. An unofficial, privately financed 52-man committee chosen and headed by Longford, completed 16 months of investigation by publishing this 520-page report on pornography. Unlike the President's commission in the U.S., Lord Longford's study found that pornography creates an addiction leading to deviant obsessions and actions. He also recommended that Britain's anti-obscenity laws be strengthened and extended. Such conclusions would perhaps not be surprising from a group organized by a former leader of the House of Lords, a Roman Catholic convert and one of 24 knights companions of the Order of the Garter (motto: Evil to him who evil thinks). But Lord Longford is also a longtime socialist who helped design the British welfare state, a self-styled fellow-traveling member of Women's Lib and the first member of the House of Lords to speak in favor of legalizing private adult homosexual acts. Longford and the bishops, social scientists, housewives, educators, pop stars and writers who made up the committee sampled pornography of every kink and kind. They interviewed purveyors, performers and police and sorted through the 5,000 letters that poured in to them.

Download or read book Defending Pornography written by Nadine Strossen and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2024-03-05 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Named a Notable Book by The New York Times Book Review in 1995, Defending Pornography examines a key question that has divided feminists for decades: is censoring pornography good or bad for women? Nadine Strossen makes a powerful case that increasing government power to censor sexual expression, beyond the limits that the First Amendment sensibly permits (for example, outlawing child pornography) would do more harm than good for women and others who have traditionally been marginalized due to sex or gender, She explains how the very anti-porn laws pushed by some feminists have led to the censorship of LGBTQ+ and feminist works, and she examines the startling connections between anti-porn feminists and right-wing fundamentalists. In an illuminating new Preface, Strossen lays out the multiple current assaults on sexual expression, which continue to come from across the ideological spectrum. She shows that freedom for such expression remains an essential prerequisite for the equality, safety, and dignity of women and sexual/gender minorities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of ten essays tracing the history and various uses of pornography in early modern Europe. In America today the intense and controversial debate over the censorship of pornography continues to call into question the values of a modern, democratic culture. This ground-breaking collection of ten critical essays traces the history and various uses of pornography in early modern Europe, offering the historical perspective crucial to understanding current issues of artistic censorship. The essays, by historians and literary theorists, examine how pornography emerged between 1500 and 1800 as a literary practice and a category of knowledge intimately linked to the formative moments of Western modernity and the democratization of culture. They reveal that the first modern writers and engravers of pornography were part of the demimonde of heretics, freethinkers, and libertines who constituted the dark underside of the Renaissance, the Scientific Revolution, the Enlightenment, and the French Revolution. From the beginning, early modern European pornography used the shock of sex to test the boundaries and regulation of decent and obscene behavior and expression in the public and private spheres, criticizing and even subverting religious and political authorities as well social and sexual norms. Download or read book Obscene Profits written by Frederick S. Lane and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2001-07-23 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sex sells. Already a ten-billion dollar business-and growing-most sex businesses require relatively low start-up costs and minimal equipment. No wonder retired porn stars, homemakers, college students, and entrepreneurs of every stripe are eager to jump on the smut band wagon. Following the money trail, or in this case, the telecom routes, the author reveals how some big phone companies are cashing in too. Obscene Profits offers a startling and entertaining new look at this very old business, and shows why pornography, in all of its variations--videos, magazines, phone-sex, spy cameras, etc.-- is one of the most profitable and popular new careers to come out of the electronic age.
